“She definitely has a secret,” Derrick said, winking. “She only does that eye thing when she’s lying. She’s lying now. Go get her.”

“I know she’s lying,” Mom said. “I raised her. You get a feeling for these things when you’re a mother. I want to know what she’s lying about.”

  “I’m not lying!”

“That’s another lie,” Mom said, wagging a finger in my face. “That’s two lies. If you tell a third your nose will grow.”

I didn’t believe that for a second. I did believe if I told a third lie my mother would cause a scene, though, and that was the last thing I wanted.

“Fine,” I said, blowing out a frustrated sigh. “I do have a secret.”

Eliot stiffened beside me as he readied for my mother’s imminent verbal onslaught.

“I knew it,” Mom said. “What is it? Are you pregnant? Are you addicted to drugs? God … are you going to start stripping for money? Your thighs are too thick, if that’s your plan.”

I had no idea where those questions came from, but my mother obviously had been worrying about these things for quite some time. “No!”

“Then what are you hiding?” Mom pressed. “I want to know right now.”

I had a choice. I could do the adult thing and tell my mother I was moving in with my boyfriend. That was my best option. Instinctively, I knew that’s exactly what I should do. It should surprise absolutely no one that I went with the other option.

“Devon is pregnant,” I blurted out.

“How did you know that?” Devon wailed.

“W-what?” Derrick’s eyes widened to the size of saucers.

“Omigod!” Mom screeched. “You’re pregnant and not married? Don’t you know if you give the milk away for free no one wants to marry the cow?”

“And there it is,” I muttered when I felt Eliot slip his arm around my waist.

“That was the worst thing you’ve ever done,” Eliot said, watching as the family descended on Devon and Derrick, news of their impending bundle of joy spreading. “You completely screwed both of them.”

  “Better them than us.”

“You’ll still have to tell your mother,” Eliot said. “You can’t negotiate your way out of it. All you did tonight was delay the inevitable.”

I shrugged. “I’ll let you look for my droids if you tell her.”

“I … fine,” Eliot muttered. “I can see this won’t get done unless I do it. I will be the grown up and tell your mother.”

“You only want to play with my droids.”

“You’re a sick woman,” Eliot said, although he dropped a quick kiss on my cheek. “I think our news can wait until next week, don’t you?”

  I couldn’t stifle my giggle. “You’re afraid.”

“I just don’t want to steal Derrick’s thunder,” Eliot said. “This is Derrick and Devon’s night. We’ll share our news next week.”

That sounded good to me. “So, do you want to eat or run?”

Eliot smirked and glanced at my shirt. “I want to find your droids.”

  “That’s what I thought.”

“I’ll race you to the truck.”

  Acknowledgments

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to read my novels. I have a particular brand of humor that isn’t for everyone – and I know that.

If you liked the book, please take a few minutes and leave a review. An independent author does it all on their own, and the reviews are helpful. I understand that my characters aren’t for everyone, though. There’s a lot of snark and sarcasm in my world – and I know some people don’t like that.

Special thanks go out to Heidi Bitsoli and Phil VanHulle for correcting the (numerous) errors that creep into a work of fiction.

If you’re interested in my future works, follow me on Facebook, Twitter or join my mailing list. I do not believe in spam. I only announce new releases or free promotions.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
