  “You won’t believe this…”

Those are the words that come straight out of Caroline’s mouth when I answer the phone. I can feel the rush from the tone of her voice as she speaks.

  “Hey, are you there?”

“Oh, sorry. I spaced out. Wait, why the phone call?”

“Forgive me for doing this, but I overheard your dad’s conversation with Larry earlier.”

With Larry? What are they talking about? I don’t have a good feeling about this.

  “What about Larry?”

“I heard he will give 49% of shares of the company to him plus three million dollars,” Caroline informs me. I can hear the seriousness of this matter in her voice.

  Damn!

I burst in laughter after I heard it. Is this for real? My dad? Giving 49% shares of the company plus $3 million to Larry? That’s insane!

“What’s funny? Hello, Dani? Did you hear what I just said?” Caroline asks me, full of worry.

“Yeah, sorry. Are you kidding me? Is he out of his mind? I know he will retire soon, but his plan sounds crazy!” I laugh because I feel like I’m about to go crazy. How can my father give to an employee?

  There must be a catch!

“I know, and you may not know about it, that’s why I called you.” Caroline sighs.

“All right, and what’s the catch? Dad won’t offer anything like that for nothing,” I question her.

“To make you fall for him and marry him!” When I hear the words, it’s like my world stops. My father sold me? I mean, it’s not exactly in that sense.

But it’s still the same for me! What the fuck? This is insane! I need to find a way to stop it.

“Dani, are you there! Hello?” Caroline asks worriedly.

I fall silent after hearing everything. I honestly don’t know what to say to Caroline. I’m so furious, I can’t even wait to unleash the boiling fury inside me.

“Sorry, I’m still here. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it!” I say to her in a solemn voice.

“What are you going to do?” This is the million-dollar question. To be exact, three million dollars and 49% of shares.

“I’ll figure something out. Thanks, Caroline. I appreciate it, but I got to go now, I got things to do,” I say my goodbyes and hang up.

Knowing my dad, he can do things like this. He’s able, and he’s got the resources, but to make a deal with Larry, that’s something I never expected to happen. Never in my wildest dreams.

My dad grew up during the Civil Rights Era. He fought tooth and nail for everything he has today. It wasn’t easy for him making his fortune in a white man’s world and he’s been tough as nails all his life.

Hours pass by, and I’m still thinking about my situation right now. Knowing that bastard, Larry, I won’t be surprised if he agrees to the deal.

Larry is a man whom no woman in their goddamn sane mind will marry. He’s a people-pleaser, he’ll do anything and everything just to get their approval and trust, regardless of the cost.

He’s my dad’s puppy, to say the least. But the man is... a puppy if you the leash. The minute you let go of it, he’s going to eat you alive and will spit no fucking bones.

I’ve been doing a good job raising my son, James, he’s five now. It never crossed my mind that I need to marry someone. If I have to, it won’t be for my own sake, it will be for my son as well.

This might be what dad’s aiming for. He must be worried about James and me. But can’t he just give up on running my life? I’m an adult and a single mother at that.

  I need to do something!

There’s only one person I have in mind to help me crush dad’s plan — Craig.

Craig’s my best friend, he’s always there for me whenever I need someone to talk to when I’m going through a rough patch. He also gets along so well with James, and he calls him ‘Papa,’ and Craig never seems to have a problem with it.

Craig is a decent and kind man. We grew up together, went to the same school together, and we are best friends, and as for James, he is his Superman.

I come up with a plan to ask him to come over for dinner. Then ask if he can do me a favor. A big one. I just hope he’ll hear me out. Asking him to pretend as my fiancé is crazy and stupid. The whole concept of this plan sounds odd and awkward.

I call him twice, hoping this time he’ll pick up the phone. And he does!

“Hi, Craig, any plans for tonight?” I ask, a bit nervous.

“Nothing in particular, what’s up?” I can hear the curiosity in his voice.

“Nothing special! Wanna come over for di
nner?” I ask him. Damn, I can’t tell him about it over the phone!

“Sure, but why all of a sudden?” he asks.

“Come over, I’ll tell you later. I’ll finish cooking soon, so better hurry and …”

James butts in. “Papa Craig, let’s play Lego! Mom bought me Lego Star Wars, the new one!”

James asks him with such excitement, Craig doesn’t even have the slightest chance to refuse the request. I hear him chuckle on the other line.

“Okay, I’ll be there in twenty minutes,” he answers.

The doorbell is ringing continuously, and James is excited to open the door with me.

Craig greets James and scoops him in his arms as they follow me to the dining room.

“What’s with the sudden dinner, Dani?” he asks while playing Lego with James. I prepare the table while they do what they do.

“Well, to be frank, I have a favor to ask.” I beckon for him to sit.

“I knew it. What is this about?” Craig stares at me.

“Look, here’s the thing, please hear me out. I hope you’ll cooperate,” I say, almost begging.

“C’mon Dani, spill the beans already,” he tells me as he grabs my hand from across the table.

Struggling to find the right words, I grab my hands back.

“I… I… Uhm… Craig, can you pretend to be my fiancé?”

He looks at me, frowning, then shock appears on his face.

“What the hell! Dan, are you out of your mind? Do you hear yourself? Pretend to be your fiancé? I don’t understand. Why? Me? What’s this about?” Craig asks me frantically.

“Dad made some arrangements with Larry. Dad told him that if he can make me fall in love and marry him, he will give 49% of company shares plus $3 million. That’s why I came up with this shit.

I’m sorry for asking you this favor. You know I have James to take care of, and I don’t know anyone to help me stop dad’s plan. Will you help me? Craig, please?”

“Honestly… hmm…” He sighs, unsure of what to say. “I… uh... I…”

“Please, I’m begging you,” I beg him.

I sound so pathetic, but it’s all or nothing, and I’ve never begged anyone for a favor. I really need his help this time.

  Craig

Fuck! I think to myself. If James wasn’t here, I probably would end letting curse words slip out. Luckily, with all the years I’ve spent being around James, my brain has already put it in my subconscious to keep things PG around him.

Why does she have to beg? I mean, it’s not like I can say no to her either way. But there’s just something that makes her so irresistible to me when she begs.

Okay, look, don’t get me wrong, Dani’s a great friend. We’ve been best friends since we were kids. She’s always been head-strong and firm with her decisions while maintaining a calm atmosphere.

That’s probably one of the reasons I develop this huge crush on her, and that’s exactly the problem! I would have loved to be engaged to the woman of my dreams so does any other guy, but didn’t we skip a bit too many steps here?

Where are the romantic dates? The movie nights? The I love you's, good mornings, and good nights? Hell, we haven’t even kissed, and the only time I ever held her hand was in senior prom when I asked her for a dance.

  “Mama, I’m hungry!”

A voice behind me shouts. The engagement thing came as a shock to me I even forgot that James was here as well. Speaking of James, I haven’t even thought about him. I know he calls me Papa sometimes, but will he even be fine with having me as his actual parent?

“Oh! Yes, honey, the food’s already done, so go grab a seat at the table. We don’t want to let it get cold,” Dani tells James, and the little bugger instantly runs towards the dinner table.

“Pasta?” I ask with a raised brow.

“Pasta,” she replies, a mischievous smile forming across her face. “Well, spaghetti and meatballs to be more exact, but that’s because James loves meatballs.”

I snicker, “He is a growing kid. He’s probably at that stage where anything that resembles vegetables is a no and anything that’s meat is a yes.”

She really prepared for this request, going as far as to cook my favorite dishes as an offering, or maybe even a bribe depending on how you look at it.

Damn, even if I don’t answer, she knows I can’t say no to her.

We eat and talk, avoiding the thorny topic. No one brings up the engagement thing, and we just end up talking about work and James’s day in school. After dinner, I help by washing the plates while she goes to change James into his pajamas.

“Wanna stay for a drink?” she offers, closing the door behind her, which leads to James’s room. “I mean, we did just get engaged, or decided to at least. Don’t people normally celebrate things like this?”

“They do, but, people don’t normally get proposed to over dinner with spaghetti and meatballs, which, by the way, was playing dirty,” I joke.

She lets out a short laugh. “Hey! What did the spaghetti and meatballs ever do to you?”

“Well, it’s cholesterol-free, high in calories, low in fat, a good source of fiber, and is my favorite dish, and the meatballs are your son’s favorite dish. So really, you didn’t just plan to bribe me with food; you planned to bribe James as well,” I reply, laughing all the while.

She gives my arm a soft punch and continues to walk past me, over to the cupboard “Okay mister nutritional facts, I just want to know if you want to get a drink. No need to give me another lecture on why pasta is your favorite all-time dish. Besides, it worked, didn’t it?”

“I’m just saying, it’s healthy and delicious, but it was playing dirty. If I said no, the pasta was there to convince me for a second time. If I still said no, James was there to convince me for the third time.”

I sigh. “You know I can’t say no to you.”

She grabs a bottle of the already open wine and pours herself a drink. She giggles.

“So, what you’re saying is, the spaghetti was delicious,” she says.

I end up laughing too. I have to admit, Dani got me good with that one. I give. It’s hard to outwit a woman. Especially one that’s laughing so innocently right in front of you.

She gestures for me to pour myself some wine as well.

“Oh, sorry, I have the day shift at the Pharmacy tomorrow, so I got to wake up early to open up the shop,” I tell her as I grab my coat from the living room couch.

“Oh, that’s alright. We can grab a drink some other time then,” Dani gives a gentle smile, but I can tell there’s a bit of disappointment mixed with it.

She always does love to drink, albeit casually. Ever since becoming a mother, she probably hasn’t drunk as much as she’d have liked. I don’t think too much into it. There’ll be plenty of time for drinking later, anyway.

I put on my coat and walk towards her front door.

“When do you plan to tell your parents?”

“I plan to ask mom to come by for dinner tomorrow. Then I’ll have her bring dad with her. I’ll tell them then,” she replies to me.

“How do you think they’ll take it?”

“Mom should be okay with it. As for dad, him being pissed will probably be his first reaction.” She chuckles. “But it’s what he gets for doing things on his own and deciding things for me.”

I shake my head, chuckling. I expected this of her. After all, this whole plan of hers is to sabotage her dad’s plan, so a bit of frustration isn’t surprising.

“All right, well, thanks for dinner. Good night Dani,” I say as I give her a hug. “Tell James I said good night too.”

“Will do. Thanks for coming by and taking me up on this ridiculous request. Good night Craig.”

Anything if it’s you, I want so badly to tell her, but I hold back and keep it in my thoughts. Instead, I give her a warm smile and wave goodbye.

As soon as I got home, the mental toll of everything that happened just hit me, and t
he exhaustion kicks in. I lie in my bed and stare at the ceiling, recapping the whole events during dinner.

Is it really okay like this? Am I really okay with this? Yeah, I want to marry her, but I want her to be mine and love me, not just be mine by status or title. As I contemplate these questions, I remember something she said. Didn’t she tell me her mother would be fine with it?

All of a sudden, I realize I’ve been looking at this whole situation all wrong. Maybe it starts out as just an agreement to stop Dani’s dad, but if her mother already approves of me, then doesn’t that just mean I just have to get Dani to fall for me as well?

If I can do that, then the marriage proposal that initially started out as a sort of contract deal can become a real engagement.

This isn’t a problem. This is an opportunity.

That night, I fall asleep thinking that I finally have a real chance of getting Dani to fall for me, and that I shall not waste it.

When Craig left, I immediately call my mom to tell her she and that they need to come over for dinner. I have to make some announcements, and I have to do it as early as I can. I don’t know what my father’s plans are, so I have to be ready.

“Hi, Mom. Can you come over my place with Dad for dinner tomorrow?” I casually ask while playing with the necklace I bought from Tiffany’s.

“Why? What’s the occasion, darling?” So I have to ask them for dinner once in a while. When I ask them to have dinner at my place, it has to mean something.
