“And she’s heading up—”
“Excuse me.” He cut her off when he saw Sandy trotting his way.
“We’re ready,” she said as she neared.
“Come on, kids.” He turned around to gather them. After all, a promise was a promise.
Sandy snagged his arm and waved Danny over. The children swarmed around them. “Go over to Trish and Erica.” She motioned to their friends, standing to one side with their own kids. “You can see very well from there. You two come with me.” She waved Clint and Danny to follow, which they did.
“What’s going on?” Clint asked.
Sandy flashed him a smile. “We all agreed the two of you get to light the fuse and burn down what remains of this place.”
She took them to where her crew stood waiting. Fuse lines snaked to the half-destroyed barn, the house, and the store. The cement walls wouldn’t burn on the store, only what remained inside. A good training exercise, he was told. It looked more like they were getting ready to blow the place up rather than burn it. Firefighters were staged along the lines to make sure the detonation cord didn’t ignite brush.
“A little over the top, isn’t it?” Danny asked.
“Oh hell, we don’t get chances like this every day,” CJ said. “We wanted to do it right. We want to watch how the fire behaves.”
Sandy handed them barbecue lighters. “We’re ready when you are.”
Clint flicked on the lighter. “Just light the cord?”
“Yep,” she said. “And burn it to the ground, baby. Burn it to the ground.”
Sharing a grin with Danny, they did just that.
