“That’s enough,” Nic said sharply, making her jump.
She looked up, her vision swimming with unshed tears for her friend, her mind flooding with questions. How was the Tribunal back? What had they done to Lucia before she’d died? What had these men been planning to do to her?
Nic held out his hand for the phone. “I’m sorry,” he said in a low voice.
The last thing she would’ve expected from him was sympathy. She offered the phone to him.
Instead of taking it, he grabbed her upper arm, pulling it forward and sinking a syringe deep into the muscle. Her heart lurched and she let out a panicked little shriek, trying to twist away, but he had a firm grip and injected her with the full dose of clear liquid. After a few moments, he withdrew the needle and released her.
Her terror changed to fury. “You drugged me!”
“No, but I will if I have to. It’s a tracker.”
There’d be no getting that one out. He had no right. All her life, she’d just wanted control over her own body. Was that too much to ask?
His gaze bored into hers as he took out his gun again. “You’re coming with me. If you do exactly what I say, immediately, without question, you’ll be safe. Understand?”
The reality of her situation sank in. Nic Joe had just saved her life.
