Except Dreamer was being led. By C.J.
David was so busy looking into her eyes and searching her face for the answer he hoped he’d find there that for a moment he didn’t notice her swollen belly. When it finally registered, he did a double take.
“My God, C.J., you’re… you’re…” He couldn’t seem to get the word out.
“Pregnant, David. I’m pregnant. Our baby is due in the middle of September.”
She took the reins for both horses and tied them to the hitching rail, then moved to kneel in front of him.
“We’ll have a family, David, even if it’s only one. But that baby will be ours. And we can have fun trying to do it again, but if it doesn’t work out, it won’t matter. We’ll have this one.”
She stood, then leaned forward to kiss him.
“Welcome home, darling.” Just as she kissed him, he reached up and pulled her to sit on his lap. With one arm around her and her arms around his neck, they sat there, his hand feeling the movement of his child. While he did that, C.J. was nibbling slowly along his earlobe and heading for his neck. He gave her every opportunity to reach whatever she was after. He finally turned to her and slanted his lips across her mouth and prepared to welcome her home.
It wasn’t long, however, before Mirage decided that he’d stood around long enough. He started to call, becoming louder as he went. When David finally raised his head and looked at the horse, he realized he’d seen the saddle before. It was the one C.J. had given him for Christmas, just before the accident, except that she had done some renovations to it as well. There appeared to be temporary straps of some kind just about where his thigh and calf would rest. That’s when he realized that they were straps to stabilize his legs. C.J. finally spoke, bringing him back to her.
“I love you David, no matter what. You won’t ever get rid of me again. Ever.”
“I hope not, Mrs. T., I sure hope not.”
They finally moved toward the horses, David remembering that he’d have to tell her about the call from Jared while they rode. But for now, it was enough that the two of them were here, together and that C.J. had forgiven him.
Three months later, C.J. and David Taylor became the proud parents of a six pound, five ounce red-headed baby girl. Looked just like her mother, according to her proud father.
Two years after that, another baby would be born. This one a boy, with black hair and blue eyes who looked just like his father, according to his proud mother.
C.J. had it all.
