Dragon Hearts (D.O.A. Book 1)

The second the men were busy looking at Myst's wrist, Bren took off in the direction of his clinic. Before he could get a few steps in, fucking guy that Watson and the other guy had called Casper, was standing in front of him and Bren bowled right into the man, "Son of a bitch! That shit hurts!"
Casper stood there as if Bren had not just run into him at top speed, yet Bren, felt as if he had run into a Mack truck. Then the most unimaginable thing in the world happened. A large cobalt blue mist appeared and grew. A form started to appear and hissed in Casper's direction. Bren was frozen in fear as he looked at what could only be a figment of his imagination.
It was a sapphire blue dragon the size of a bus. The thing had what looked like ram horns coming out of the sides of his head, large blue scales that ended at a sharp arrow tipped tale, with wings that spanned as wide as the body was long and the fucking claws...this thing may be a hallucination, but it was a really pissed looking one as well, "Oh, my fucking God!"
"Oh shit! Casper back the fuck away from Billman now!" Myst said harshly.
Casper went to move, but imagination or not, Bren was not about to be left alone with the beast in front of him. Grabbing the man, Bren hid behind the guy, scared for his life.
The dragon thing hissed and went to move forward as Casper held his hands up, "It's all good Pit. No one is going to hurt your sentience. Call your maharishi off."
Maharishi? What the fuck is that? Then a thought hit Bren, "Wait! You can see that? If you can see that then that means it can't be a hallucination. I mean, if I can see it and you can see it then that means a fucking dragon is really there, right?"
Myst slowly moved towards Bren stopping when the dragon hissed and moved his head towards the large man, stopping Myst in his tracks, "Bren we will explain everything, but we all need you to calm down. Pit, damn it, control your maharishi before someone gets hurt!"
"Not me── Bren." Rene rasped as he tried to sit up only to collapse back to the ground.
Confusion rushed through Bren. What the fuck did he have to do with this beast? All Bren wanted to do right now was get back to his clinic and pretend like none of this shit was happening, "I need to go now. Maxie needs me and I really need to fucking go now."
Bren started to move, then realized it meant he had to walk past the dragon. Fuck!
Taj gasped, "Are you saying Bren is in control of your dragon?"
"Yes. My ma──maharishi transferred." Rene said louder than he had a moment ago.
"Okay. Okay, we can do this. Bren, just calm down and talk to your maharishi." Sparky ordered.
Bren looked at Sparky as if he had lost his mind, "Are you serious? I'm not bringing attention to me with that thing!"
"Rene's maharishi will listen to you. It will do as you request. Bren, you are the one in charge right now." Sparky explained.
Bren turned to Watson in disbelief, "You have got to be shitting me? How the fuck am I in charge when there's a goddamn dragon standing feet away? You talk to the damn thing!"
Sparky made small movements towards Bren, "Look, I know all of this is confusing and scary as fuck, but you have to trust us here. The only one that the dragon is going to listen to is you. Now please, just talk to him and let him know that you are not in any danger from us."
Bren scoffed, "How the hell do I know that? You want me to lie? I do not lie, not even to an animal. The last time I checked, it wasn't me that brought this beast to the party. A party I most certainly didn't RSVP to! I don't even understand what the fuck is going on here!"
Sparky sighed heavily, "I'm not asking you to lie. I swear, no one here wants to hurt you. You have to believe me, Bren. We are the Dragons of Anarchy. We were brought to this earth by Heck."
"So, what? Are you telling me that you're aliens from another planet?" Bren asked with a roll of his eyes.
Sparky shook his head, "No, we are not aliens. There was a man that was extremely special to God and he was granted rebirth many times. Eventually, the world here knew him as Isaac Thomas Hecker. However, what people didn't know is that he was, or should I say is, a Helper Angel and God's right-hand man. He was brought in to help the humans of earth. However, Giovanni Ciocchi del Monte came along. This man begat evil in everything he touched, including little boys. He is said to have been the son of the greatest evil, reborn many times. Throughout time, Giovanni has influenced evil all around. It became too much for Heck to take care of on his own and he was granted a gift. Heck was allowed to create his own army that would fight for the people and take out as many evil beings as they could. That's us, DOA. That's what we do. DOA is brought in on especially horrific cases, often serial cases all over the world. Right now, it's to take out the man responsible for the rapes and murders of Aaron Archer and Keith Krane."
Bren thought Sparky was insane, but fuck, so was a huge ass dragon behind the damn coffee shop, "What about Godzilla? What the fuck does he have to do with this?"
Taj opened his mouth to speak, but Rene grasped Bren's shoulders gently and explained, "Each member of DOA is granted a safety net, a partner, if you will. They are connected to us by spirit. We call them our Maharishi. If we need help with something we can call on them. They live within each of us. The one you see now is mine, well, it was, until I found you."
Bren turned quickly, wide eyed and baffled, "Me? What the hell did I do?"
Rene gave Bren a soft and endearing smile, "You did nothing wrong, Bren. However, my maharishi recognizes our sentience."
"You said that word before, but I don't think you’re meaning it the same as the Webster dictionary would define it to be." Bren replied curiously.
Shaking his head, Rene replied, "I would think not. Although, you will become my reason for every decision I make from the moment we mate until we are taken from this world. To us a sentience is what the shifter world would call a mate."
Bren drew back sharply, asking, "Shifter?"
Rene sighed, "We will discuss that at another time. Just know that you are not just a part of our soul, but the essence of it. You, Bren, are the reason our maharishi and I will take another breath."
Taj must have moved, because the dragon lowered his large head and hissed in his direction. Rene turned to him, "Taj, do not move, damn it. Bren and I will take care of this."
Taj pursed his lips, "He asks too many questions. Just order your maharishi to stand down and get it over with!"
Bren turned to Taj, "Fuck you, dick lick! Maybe I hope you eats you like a slice of pizza! Then again, I would never want to make an animal sick and you are such an asshole that you would probably give him digestion issues."
The maharishi growled low and leaned closer to Taj. Rene gasped, "Bren please, that is not helping. Taj is just looking out for our people. If anyone sees our dragons, we will lose everything and be no help to the human world."
Bren sighed, "I can't wrap my mind around what you're saying, Rene."
Rene grunted then took in a deep breath, then let it out slowly, saying, "We can talk more on this later. For now, I need you to stop our dragon from killing or hurting my men. Our maharishi believes you to be under a threat. He is in protection mode and if any of my men make a move he deems as threatening, he will kill them. So please, do as Sparky asks and let him know you are safe. I promise, any other questions you have I will willingly answer."
Bren thought they were all crazy. Helpers to some angel of God? Dragons? Seriously? How did his life become a scene from How to Train Your Dragon? Bren had to be losing his fucking mind. Maybe he was wrong and he had sucked in some of the ether when he had done the surgery earlier today? However, if everyone was seeing what he was seeing, then what did this all mean? If this shit was real, Bren knew one thing for sure, someone was going to sit down with him and help him understand everything.
"I promise, I will do just that. Just tell our spirit protector to stand down before someone gets hurt." Rene said calmly.
"Are you reading my fucking mind?" Bren asked fearfully.
Shaking his head, Pit replied, "I wouldn't need to read your mind, even if I could, which I can't. Your body language and facial expression tell me everything I need to know."
Bren shook his head, saying, "I am a doctor, I save lives, I am not supposed to take them."
Rene scoffed, "Yeah, well, if you don't calm yourself, that dragon is going to take them for you."
Bren didn't know what to think right now. He felt fear racing through him as well as confusion, disbelief, and strangely, lust from Telkin's touch. He was about to lose his mind, if he hadn't already. All he wanted was to get away from these people and pretend this was all bad roast beef from his lunch. The dragon before him took that opportunity to start moving towards Bren and Bren did the only thing he could think to do.
Bren took off running. Everyone yelled for him to stop, but Bren was not in the listening mood. He had to get away. Suddenly, a massive gust of wind seemed to push Bren forward and he fell to his knees, just as large claws grabbed him by the shoulders and lifted him off the ground. The last thing Bren remembered was the ground getting further and further away before everything went black.
CHAPTER FIVE
"Pit, what are you doing?" Taj called out.
Making his way towards his bike, Rene yelled out, "Going back to Drago, before my mate dies of a heart attack."
Sparky quickly got to Rene, "Maybe you shouldn't be driving right now. The Dragon Fire..."
"The Dragon Fire has abated at the moment. I think because my maharishi is with Bren right now. My muscles just ache and I'm a bit tired. Sparky, do you have that number to get a hold of Stephanie Archer?"
"Yeah, why?" Sparky asked uneasily.
Rene looked at the clinic and then back to Sparky, "Bren talked about a dog he was scheduled to watch tonight. I have a feeling if anything bad happened to that animal, Bren would never forgive himself. Get with her and see if she can get someone there to watch the mutt."
Sparky drew back in shock, "And what the hell am I supposed to tell her happened to the good doctor?"
Rene gritted his teeth, and got into Sparky's face, "I don't give a fuck what you tell her! Just fucking get it done. I will not have my mate feeling guilty because he left an animal unattended and it died."
Sparky swallowed hard and nodded jerkily, "O──Okay, Pit. I'm on it."
Putting his helmet on, Rene tapped a button that activated his communicator as he mounted his bike and started the engine. Seconds later Wiz answered, "Hey Pit, we're about ten minutes out. I thought Sparky said you were in trouble?"
Rene quickly replied, "I'm fine. Turn around and get back to the bunker. I need you to locate my maharishi."
"Seriously? Okay, we're turning around now. Oh hey, one more thing. Cobra and I went over some street camera videos. There really wasn't anything we can see that indicates someone making their way towards the airport. What's odd is, we didn't see any vehicles even taking that road." Wiz told Pit.
"Wiz, I appreciate that, and we can talk about it all soon. However, we have a bigger problem on our hands right now." Rene stated as he took off towards home.
"Another death? That's strange, I didn't hear anything on the scanner." Wiz replied.
"No, I found my sentience, Wiz." Rene stated as he made the turn towards Drago.
Wiz gasped, "Holy shit! Seriously, Pit? They're real? I mean, I always thought they were a myth. Who is he or is it a she? I mean, a sentience is a sentience but being gay like we are, that shit would just suck, but I'm sure you'll work it out if he's a she. I mean I──"
"Wiz, stop fucking talking and listen!" Rene snarled impatiently.
Rene could almost see the man nodding, as he said, "Yeah, sure, Pit. Sorry, I'm just really happy for you and want to──"
"Wiz damn it, shut up and listen to me. I'll go into more explanation later, but for now I need you to look for my maharishi. He should be arriving there with Bren any second. Do not...and I repeat...Do not attempt to get close to my sentience. My maharishi is unstable and not in my control at the moment." Rene explained.
"Wait! What do you mean not under your control? If your maharishi is not being controlled by you, who the hell is he answering to?" Wiz asked in shock.
"Bren Billman and he is not taking it well at all. He tried to run from him and was quickly taken by Rene's dragon." Taj explained on the communicator.
"Who is──Wait, you mean the vet? Are you saying the Vet is your mate?" Wiz asked.
Cobra must have been driving, because he gasped, "Hold up. You mean Bren Billman, the vet and boss to the mother of our first victim is Pit's mate, and somehow gained control of Pit's maharishi?"
Rene didn't want to continue repeating himself. If he had control of his dragon right now he would send him over there to light a fire under both their asses, "Look, I need you to search the town. Locate my sentience and stand down until I get there. Bren is in shock, scared, and doesn't understand what all those feelings are doing to our dragon. If he continues to maintain his instability our dragon may react and someone could get hurt."
"Okay, Pit, we're on it." Wiz replied.
"Oh, and Wiz. I need Eagle to go into the tombs and locate any information he can find on sentience. I have a feeling there are things we really don't know about a mating transition and he needs to get as much information for us as he can."
"Okay, Pit. Oh, and congratulations. I am really bugged out and happy for you." Wiz said just as he cut communications.
Rene and his men rode in silence for a long while, until Taj felt the need to break it, "Pit, what are you planning on doing with Bren?"
"What the hell does that even mean?" Rene asked in frustration.
"Pit, if Bren is your sentience then we may have a problem and you know it. The animal doc is going to have to relocate. We're going to have to post guards on him twenty-four seven and he'll be expected to sever all ties with anyone outside of Drago." Taj stated.
Rene knew what Taj was saying to be true, but somehow, he didn't think his mate was going to go for the new life he would be asked to become accustomed to.
Taj must have caught Rene's hesitation, "Pit──"
Rene wasn't in the mood to argue right now, "I know what you're saying, Taj and we will cross that bridge when we come to it. For now, I just want to get my sentience and maharishi under control so that Bren and I can talk and get this shit figured out. Nothing matters right now to me but that. Okay?"
Taj didn't say anything for a few moments, then replied, "Pit, I'm really happy for you, but you need to remember, his death means your death and DOA needs their leader."
Pit didn't say anything in return. He just needed the time it took to get to their home to think about his next move. His mate was scared and unsure of what was going on. Bren's life was being turned upside down right now, and it was up to Pit to help him turn it back and stabilize his world. Pit didn't have the first clue as to what he could do, but he only knew he would do whatever it took to help Bren through this transition.
Thirty minutes later, Pit was pulling into Drago, and raced to the clubhouse. Wiz was standing there with Nautical, both looking nervous and unsure about something. Fearing the worst, Rene turned off his engine and pulled his helmet from his head, "What is it? Did my maharishi not bring Bren here?"
"Oh, he brought him and I have Cobra watching him." Wiz replied nervously.
Confused, Rene asked, "Then what's the problem?"
"Your mate is currently not conscience." Wiz started to say.
Rene felt everything in him stop. His heart, his breath, his mind all stopped at those words.
"Pit, calm down. He's alright, I swear. I think that he had a huge shock and he passed out. Your maharishi is watching over him, but no one can get near him right now. Cobra tried twice and the smell of singed hair is still in the air." Wiz quickly replied.
"I told you not to attempt to get close to my sentience!" Rene ground out angrily.
"We just wanted to make sure he was breathing and ok
ay." Wiz rushed to explain.
"Where is he?" Pit growled.
Wiz pointed towards the garage, "He's in the field behind the garage."
"Everyone stay the hell back! I'm serious. Just let me talk to Bren and try and work some sense into my dragon." Pit ordered.
Making his way in the direction Wiz had told him, Pit came to a screeching halt when he saw his mate tucked against his majestic Sapphire blue dragon. His maharishi had its massive wings and tail wrapped around Bren's sleeping form. His head was tucked right next to Bren's and although it's eyes were closed, Pit knew the beast was extremely alert and knew he was there.
"Maharishi, you must let Bren go. He doesn't understand who or what we are. Just let me talk with him and I promise I will do my best to get him to accept us." Rene urged but his dragon refused to acknowledge his presence.
"Seriously, after the centuries you and I have spent together, you are going to ignore me? Come on maharishi, let Bren go." Rene stated firmly, but still his maharishi ignored him.
Bren began to stir and immediately the maharishi's cobalt blue eyes opened and began to nuzzle against Bren's hair.
"Where the hell am I? What's going on?" Bren muttered as he turned then froze.
Worried that Bren might hurt himself with the massive claws of his maharishi, Rene said, "Bren, please stay still. My dragon will not harm you. He recognizes you for who you are to us. However, any sharp movements and you could accidently get harmed."
Bren turned his head in their dragon's direction and found himself eye to eye with their beast. His mate turned to Rene, his eyes were round and filled with fear. The scent of that terror was like acid to Rene's stomach and disturbing his maharishi. "You must calm yourself, Bren. The maharishi does not understand your fear and thinks there may be a threat to you."
"A threat to me? I am lying in the arms of a fucking mountain with claws, wings, and teeth larger than a damn car. The only thing scaring the shit out of me right now is this thing." Bren snapped.
The large dragon drew back as if slapped. Pit felt sadness at the devastation running through his dragon. Bren did not understand that their dragons were connected to their souls and heart. What he felt, Pit felt and although he understood Bren's fear, he didn't like seeing his maharishi hurting. Their dragon was a magnificent creature. He understood every language in the world and communication between the two was literally all in the mind. They shared everything, thoughts, ideas, and their mate. It was literally two lives in one body, unless Pit called on the aid of his dragon. When his dragon had moved from him to Bren, it was to stake his own claim on their mate. He needed that closeness to Bren just as Rene did. In truth, Rene missed his maharishi connection.
