Christmas is for Children

‘I should have taken you to a hotel…’ he said, looking at her regretfully. ‘One day I’ll give you all the things I can’t now, Flo…’
‘I have all I could possibly want or need…’ Flo drew her breath as he held her closer and bent his head to kiss her. ‘I love you so much, Robbie, and I’ve waited all these years for you. How could I want anythin’ more?’
‘I love you,’ he said and there was a tremor in his voice. ‘You don’t know how often I regretted leaving you all those years ago. I was a coward and because of it you suffered so much…’
‘I cried for you and I cried because I couldn’t claim Honour as my own,’ Flo said, ‘but I always had her to love and I thought of her as being your gift to me… and I always hoped that one day…’
Robbie kissed her and then swept her up in his arms, taking her up the stairs to their bedroom. Flo surrendered to the passion of his loving with all the joy and love that was in her and knew that for the rest of their lives he would never leave her or stop loving her. She was filled with happiness because she’d never expected that she would be loved so much. It had been a long wait, but they were lovers at last, joined as husband and wife and so very much in love. Now they were older and their lovemaking was more thoughtful than when they were little more than children, but just as sweet as it had been on that long-ago night.
They had three children, all of whom were precious to Flo, but she held a secret hope in her heart that she was not too old to perhaps have another baby and she knew that the years ahead would be filled with love and laughter. Even if she were not blessed with another child, she could always help other children who had nothing, especially at Christmas, because after all that was what it was all about…
