  To that end, he started to study. It was what he knew best, so seemed like the first thing to try and do.

  Later, after Brenner was awake to help him, he’d make some plans. It might not work, but then he’d simply move to the next thing. In the meantime, he looked up how to run, hide and even vanish, if it became needed. After that, he researched how to fight.

  If nothing else, he might need it the next time the bad men came for him.

  When that happened, if it did, he planned to do much more than sitting, frozen in place, or flailing wildly. If he could, at least.

  That wasn’t assured, but as he settled in to learn how to get that done, he started to understand that it would really be possible.

  For someone like him, at least.
