“Wanna hold him?” I asked.
“Totally.” Rex took him from my arms and held him like a pro. “Wow. I can’t get over how cute he is. I thought babies were supposed to be ugly.”
“Not ours,” I said. “He’s perfect.”
Kayden came next and stared at our little boy. “You guys did a great job. He’s perfect.” She sat beside Rex and stroked Liam’s head, adoring him just the way Rae and I did.
I walked back to the bed and ran my fingers through Rae’s hair. “Need anything?”
“No. I feel really good.” She stopped staring at Liam and looked up at me. “Childbirth wasn’t as bad as they say.”
“You’re just stronger than everyone else.”
She chuckled. “I think I was just lucky.”
I sat on the stool and grabbed her hand. “Thank you.”
“For what?” she asked.
“For all of this.” My life wouldn’t have turned out so wonderful without her. I would have married someone else, and I would have been happy, but not like this. Rae gave me something no one else ever could. There was no other woman I would have been nearly as happy with. Our difficult times were long in the past, but I was grateful things worked out the way they did.
She smiled and squeezed my hand. “You don’t need to thank me. It was meant to happen anyway.”
