A Girl Like You

by E. L. Todd

I shook my head in response.

“The second he’s away he fucks some girl?”

“Probably because he knew there was no way I would ever find out.” That didn’t sound like Cayson either but I couldn’t deny what I read ten times in a row. There was no mistaking what happened between him and this girl.

“That fucking shithead.” Her shock started to wear off, and her usual sassiness started to boil. “That piece of shit. How could he do this to you?”

  “I don’t know…”

“Do you think…?” She shook her head. “Nevermind.”

  “What?” I asked quietly.

  “Nevermind,” she repeated.

“No, tell me.” I knew it was something I didn’t want to hear.

“Do you think…that maybe he fell in love with this girl? And he was going to end things with you but changed his mind when he realized you were pregnant?” She wouldn’t look at me as she said it. “Cayson may be a cheater, but I can’t picture him leaving a child behind.”

I didn’t think I could feel worse but I was wrong. “I…I hadn’t thought of that.”

Trinity turned to me, and her eyes were wet just like mine. “I’m so sorry, Skye. I…I don’t know what to say.”

“It’s okay…I don’t know what to say either.”

  “You don’t deserve this.”

“I know.” I wiped my eyes again.

Trinity grabbed the tissues from the table then handed me the box.

I took a huge chunk and dabbed my eyes.

Trinity scooted closer to me on the couch then put her arm around my shoulders. “I’m so sorry…I really am.” She rocked me slightly as she held me close. “I’m sorry.”

I closed my eyes as Trinity held me. “I know you are.”

“I know it doesn’t seem like it now, but everything will be okay. We’ll get through this together.”

I shook my head. “I’ll never get through this, Trinity. I had the perfect life an hour ago. Now I have nothing.”

“That’s not true. You have me.”

I opened my eyes and stared at the letter on the table. Who knew a little piece of paper could ruin my life.

“What now?” Trinity asked. “Are you going to confront him?”

I nodded. “Then I’m going to leave him.”

“Good,” she said. “He doesn’t deserve you. What he did is unforgiveable.”

“I can’t believe my marriage is over…it didn’t last very long.”

“I know.” She continued to rock me. “But we’ll get through this like we always do.”

The tears came in stronger waves and they inched down my face. Soon, my chest started to ache with my heavy breathing. I sobbed my heart out, feeling the life in my soul drain away. That morning I woke up to the love of my life staring at me. He kissed my belly then made love to me while he looked into my eyes. When I had to say goodbye, it was painful. I didn’t want him to leave. All I wanted was him by my side every single day.

But now all of that was gone. Everything had changed. The life I once had disappeared like vapor. It was there, drifting through the sky, until one day it just…faded away.
