Awakening (The Guardari Chronicles Book 1)

Her eyes widened and she stilled. There was no way that it could possibly be who she thought it was, but after she was released, she turned to find the handsome face and blue eyes of one Jacen Calgen grinning at her. “Jacen?”
“Don’t faint on me now, Emmy.” Then his expression turned serious. “What in the Six happened to you? You’ve been missing now for something like a month. Your party, then the attack. Everyone thought you were dead or worse. Your father and everyone have been looking for you. Who was that hooded man with you? A--.” Before he could continue, she threw a hand over his mouth and pulled them deeper into the alleyway.
“Quiet. I was kidnapped by the man I’m with the night our castle was attacked. I’m gladdened to see that you were unharmed.” She remembered Tylred’s glassy stare as he died in front of her and shivered. “I’ve been dragged everywhere with him. Through the wilderness and the Wilds and half starved. Thank Muliera you saw me… Why are you here in the tavern district anyway?”
“That’s not important. Where is he now? In the tavern?”
“We should not worry about that right now, Jacen. How did Grandfather die?” Emmaline cut right to the heart of her curiosity, unwilling to talk about anything else until it was sated.
Jacen gave her an odd look, “The King still lives.”
Emmaline felt abruptly strange after he finished speaking. He was still looking at her like that. With...pity? “Uncle Herrin?” Her mouth was dry. And why was she so cold, as if ice had started creeping up from her feet while her the back of her neck bathed in a immediate sweat?
“The Crown Prince still lives as well. Listen to me, Emmaline. Let me take you back to the castle. You can ask all you want away from here with a hot meal and a bath.”
“Why are the royal mourning flags up?” She didn’t even sound like herself, instead she sounded reedy and out of breath.
Everything was starting to fade out, her vision, her hearing, all of it but yet she still felt so cold. “Emmaline...I...I’m so sorry. But Lord Gregor died just three days past. From--.” But she had stopped listening even as his lips moved and his eyes showed nothing but pity and some fear. The icy feeling that crept up her body closed like a fist around her heart and shattered it in her chest, stealing her breath and in that moment nothing else mattered. Her daddy was dead.
