  “Mine’s an hour by bus.”

“So probably at least forty minutes by car.” Too bad one of them didn’t live closer. “Would you object to a hotel?”

She laughed. “Not if it means we can get horizontal faster.”

  “Follow me.”

  Chapter Four

Sam grabbed Alex’s hand and tugged her down the empty corridor. Their footsteps echoed in the vast emptiness, and she was almost tempted to demand he take her right where they were.

However, she knew as well as he did the Condors would frown on any more impropriety from Sam. No, it was better they just rent a room.

Ten minutes later, Alex stood beside Sam at the counter of a posh downtown hotel. He signed the credit card slip and took the key card from the receptionist before snaking an arm around her waist.

  “Ready?”

  “You bet.”

He tugged her toward the elevators. Not that she needed any extra encouragement to plaster herself to his side. Closer was better. Contact, even if it wasn’t skin-on-skin yet, filled a void their hot kisses hadn’t touched.

The elevator doors slid shut, and the car started gliding upward. Without warning, Sam bent his head. His tongue invaded her mouth.

She curled her fingers into his shoulders and kissed him back. He pulled away when the doors opened, leaving her breathless and aching for more.

She must have whimpered, because he pressed a finger to her lips. “Patience, Alex.”

  “Not one of my virtues.”

He chuckled as he slid the key card into the door. “I figured as much.”

She ducked under his arm and bolted into the room, which was dominated by a massive bed. She sat at its foot and leaned back on her elbows, watching him shut the door. He strode toward her, tugging off his shirt as he closed the distance between them.

“I’m assuming you want to skip any more talking.”

All she could do was nod. Shirtless Sam was even more beautiful than his clothed counterpart. Massive chest…six-pack…golden hair disappearing into the waistband of his jeans.

She flattened her hands against his pecs, sprinkled with sandy curls. They jumped beneath her palms, and he sucked in a breath.

“I like a woman who doesn’t waste time.”

Alex rose up on her knees and ran her tongue along his collarbone. Then she grinned. “I know.”

“You’re wearing too many clothes.” He slid his hands beneath her T-shirt and swept upward.

Free of her top, she reached behind her back and unhooked her bra. She slipped it off her shoulders, intending to make him wait a moment before revealing the breasts he’d been so interested in earlier.

Sam tugged the lingerie out of her fingers and flung it across the room. “Like I said, too many clothes.”

The blend of wonder and desire on his face puckered her nipples. They tightened further when he cupped her breasts—and when his blond head bent to suckle her, she almost came right then.

Desire zinged her between the legs and elsewhere. She fumbled with the button of his jeans. “I can’t wait, Sam.”

He licked a trail down her abdomen, his tongue dipping into her belly button while he divested her of her shorts and panties.

She scrambled back on the bed, stopping only when her back hit the headboard. She let her thighs fall open as she watched Sam push down his jeans and step out of them.

“No fair,” she teased. “I want to see the whole package.”

He grinned and pulled off his briefs. His—er, package—sprang free. It was as perfect as the rest of him. He was Greek-god gorgeous, all bronzed skin and rippled muscles. He then joined her on the bed. His hands and tongue resumed their roaming over her breasts.

“Lower,” she urged. She bucked her hips so there was no mistaking her meaning.

He leaned back on his heels and laughed. “You really are impatient.”

“Call it a character flaw. Just keep things moving along.”

“Who could say ‘no’ to such a romantic proposition?” With another chuckle, he cupped her intimately. One big, rough finger slipped between the folds of her sex, followed by another.

It wasn’t enough. She squirmed against his hand. “More.”

“Greedy woman.” He lightly tapped the bridge of her nose with his free hand.

She reached for him. His erection was hot, throbbing. She wrapped her fingers around it and squeezed. “I think someone’s as eager as I am.”

Sam groaned. “Hold that thought. I’ll be right back.”

He fumbled around on the floor at the foot of the bed. Not soon enough, he returned, package wrapped and ready. She guided him between her thighs. He pushed into her, strong and sure, and she gasped.

“Thought you were ready.” His voice, low in her ear, was strained.

“I am.” She bucked her hips, getting more comfortable every second. “In case no one’s told you before, your package could use its own ZIP code.”

His laughter vibrated through her, making her nerves sing. “Ah, Alex, you do have a way with words. I’ve never heard it put quite like that before.”

The praise heated her skin as much—or more—than the little swirling motion Sam was doing with his hips. She moaned and urged him deeper, torn between hoping the pleasure never ended and straining for satisfaction. She lost herself in the rhythm of his thrusts, allowing the pleasure to snake through her veins and leave her afloat on a wave of warmth. By the time he groaned and collapsed beside her, she’d enjoyed not one but two orgasms.

She curled into his side and put her head on his chest, ear to his rapidly beating heart. “That was amazing.”

  Sam grunted.

“Not very eloquent after sex, eh?” He grunted again, and Alex giggled. “That’s okay. I have enough words for both of us.”

“Yeah.” He draped his hand over her hip so his hand cupped her butt, holding her tight against his side.

Within seconds, his breathing evened out. She lifted her head off his chest. He was sleeping.

Typical man. He’d just rocked her world, and now he was sound asleep.

Alex bit back a giggle. Maybe Sam had the right idea. After a short nap, they’d both be recharged for another round. She let her eyes drift shut and joined him in dreamland.

  ****

Sam awakened to soft snuffles as Alex burrowed deeper into the crook of his arm. The details of what they’d just done played through his head on a continuous loop. He cracked one eye open. His hand still dominated Alex’s ass, much the way he’d dominated the rest of her. He flexed his fingers, watching them spring back against her taut cheek.

“Mmm,” she murmured. Her eyelids fluttered up halfway, her lips curving into a sultry smile. “That’s one hell of a wake-up call.”

He squeezed again. “Does that mean you’re up?”

“I am.” Her sleep-roughened laugh was sexy as hell. “The question is, are you?”

“If you’d asked a minute ago, the answer would have been no.” He planted his other hand on her butt, too, and shifted so she straddled his waist. “But I find myself rising to the occasion.”

“I can tell.” Her sex was still wet, and she smiled as she slid along his length. “I trust you have another condom?”

For one brief moment, he wondered what she’d do if he said no. Sanity returned, and he chuckled. “I’m always prepared.”

Alex scrambled to the floor and returned with the whole strip. “Gotta love a Boy Scout.” She tore open a packet and proceeded to put it on with her teeth.

Sam sucked in a ragged breath. “You’re good.”

“Practice.” She lifted one shoulder and her breast bobbed.

Whoever she’d practiced on deserved a World Series ring. The answer died in his throat when she straddled his waist and started riding him. It was just the way he’d envisioned earlier—her cheeks pink and laughter flashing in her eyes.

While Alex was occupied, Sam took the opportunity to explore every inch of her breas
ts. She couldn’t rush him while she was focused on his cock. He caressed and rubbed until her nipples were plump and begging for his mouth. And when he scraped his teeth over one distended peak, she threw her head back and squealed.

Her pleasure made him explode, too. He came, hard, while sucking one nipple and rolling the other between his thumb and finger.

“You. Are. Diabolical,” she scolded between pants.

  “Hardly.”

The look she gave him while disentangling from him was indecipherable. He dropped the condom into the trash can, prepared to snuggle up to her again. He liked the way she felt stretched against him.

Probably more than he ought to.

He shoved aside the thought. They’d made no promises to one another, said nothing about the future… said nothing about anything beyond the moment.

Always better to be sure. “Alex?”

  “Yeah?”

  “What is…this?”

“Silly Sam.” She sat up and wrapped her fingers around his cock. Under her competent hands, it jerked back to life with a few strong, sure strokes. “We’re having fun. Blowing off steam.”

She rolled on another condom and waved what was left of the strip—two more. “When these are gone, we’re done.”

Every guy’s dream answer, right? Right.

So why did it leave bitter disappointment in his mouth?

  Chapter Five

They’d blown through Sam’s condom stash before midnight. Alex sat upright beside him, back braced against the headboard, while he slept the sleep of a satisfied man.

She, too, was satiated—for now. Pleasure hummed through her veins, and she wanted nothing more than to close her eyes and bask in the warmth emanating from his muscular form. But spending the last few hours with Sam was all she needed to know one night would never be enough.

So what in hell had possessed her to wave condoms in the air and tell him they were over when the condoms were gone?

“Idiot,” she scolded herself under her breath. Sam was so far gone he didn’t even stir.

That gave her an idea. She tapped his thigh and whispered his name. Still no movement.

Alex giggled and eased out of bed. After digging her cell phone out of her duffel, she went in the bathroom and closed the door.

“Come on, Caro. Please pick up.”

On the last ring before it went to voicemail, Caro answered. “What is it, Alex?”

  “You sound out of breath.”

“It’s fine.” Her snappish tone said it was anything but. “What do you need?”

Well, tough. It wasn’t like she regularly called Caro in the middle of the night. And this request was too important to stop now. “Condoms.”

  “What?”

She pulled the phone away from her ear too late. Caro’s screech had already punctured her eardrum. “You heard me.”

  “You’re with Sam?”

  “Yeah.”

“And he ran out of condoms?” Caroline cackled. “I didn’t think that was possible. How many times have you two done it?”

  “Not nearly enough.”

Caroline laughed again. “I’ll be there in forty-five minutes.”

  “That long?”

“I have to stop for the condoms. Think a box of twelve will be enough?”

  “It’s a start.”

She dressed quickly, retrieved the key card from Sam’s wallet and sneaked down to the lobby. With every minute that passed, she grew more nervous that Sam would wake up and find her gone. When Caro finally sauntered through the revolving door, Alex jumped out of the cushy leather lounge chair to meet her.

  “Took you long enough.”

Her friend made a big show of checking her watch. “I made it in thirty-nine minutes. You should be grateful.”

Alex took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She was being uncharacteristically ungrateful. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

“You’re not the only one with a ballplayer in your bed, you know.”

  She gaped at Caro. “Christian?”

“Yeah.” A satisfied grin spread across her friend’s face. “He’s better in bed than he is on the field.”

Alex bit her tongue to keep from responding that wasn’t much of a stretch—a comment that would do nothing to make up for dragging her friend away from Chris. “I’m going back up to the room. Thanks again.”

  Caroline’s voice stopped her. “Alex?”

  She turned around. “Yeah?”

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” She waved the plastic bag.

“Oh God.” She dashed back to where Caro waited and snatched the bag from her hand.

Caroline just laughed. “Sam’s that good, eh?”

“I’m just glad I remembered to grab the key card on my way out.”

Alex rode the elevator back upstairs and tiptoed back into the room. She dropped the Walgreens bag into the bathroom trash, covering it with a wad of tissues, and then slid the condoms into her duffel.

Blissfully, Sam slept through all her maneuvering. She smiled to herself. Now, when he woke up, she could claim she’d remembered the condoms in her bag.

  ****

Half asleep, Sam felt the bed dip when Alex slid back underneath the sheet and curled up next to him. She threw one leg over his thigh, so he draped a hand over her hip. She practically purred and rubbed against him.

The woman was insatiable—and so sexy it hurt. His balls were tight and full with wanting her.

Now fully awake, he traced a figure eight on her upper thigh. “Alex?”

  “Mmm?”

  “You awake?”

She tilted her chin up and regarded him with serious blue eyes. “You want me to be?”

“Hell yeah.” He followed up the words—more of a low growl—by rolling her onto her back. She tipped her head, exposing the smooth skin of her throat. No vampire—or even a vampire enthusiast, he’d never been turned on by that part of the female anatomy before. On Alex, however, her pale flesh shining in the moonlight was the sexiest thing ever. He nipped her and then, when she dug her nails into his shoulders in what he assumed was encouragement, laved the hurt.

He kissed a trail to her breasts and, after plucking and rolling the nipples to hard points, sat back on his heels to drink her in. She writhed under his gaze.

“You’re so hot,” he murmured. The words were wholly inadequate, but he had no others.

He drew his index finger down the valley between her breasts, traced the well of her belly button and then slid down farther to cup her sex. She was slick with desire. Good, because he was ready to lose himself inside her—again.

Sam started to reach for protection and remembered.

  “Dammit.”

  She frowned. “What’s wrong?”

  “We’re out of condoms.”

  “Let me check my bag.”

She scrambled out of bed and crossed the room to her duffel. After rummaging around for much too long, she turned back to him clutching an economy-sized box of Trojans.

A triumphant grin spread over her face. “Found some.”

As she walked back to the bed, she ripped open the box. She tore off one of the foil packets and handed it to him.

He rolled it on, and Alex straddled his waist. He slid into her—like coming home, even if a tiny part of him wondered about the magic appearance of protection.

Later, when she collapsed against him, panting, he wrapped his arms around her. Together, their breathing slowed.

Finally, he broke the silence. He had to say something or he’d go insane. “Not that I’m looking a gift Trojan in the mouth, but why did you have condoms in your bag?”

She tensed. “I’m a thoroughly modern woman.”

  “Yeah?”

Alex raised her head. Icy blue eyes were at odds with her mostly pliant body. “Cosmo tells us to carry protection with us at all times.”

He raised his hands. “Hey, I’m glad you did. I just thought it was a little strange that you di
dn’t mention them earlier.”

She blushed. Interestingly, her chest turned redder than her cheeks.

“Come on,” she pleaded. “Can’t a girl have any secrets?”

“Where I’m concerned? I’d rather we keep everything on the table.” The fallout from his last disastrous affair still dogged his every move. He didn’t need to add more fuel for the tabloids.

Alex flung herself out of bed and stomped to the bathroom, returning with a bag from Walgreens. She thrust it at him. “Caro delivered these so you and I could keep—er—enjoying each other’s company.”

Sam looked at the empty plastic bag and then at Alex’s embarrassed face and then back at the bag again. Dammit. Why did he have to say just the wrong thing? “That was…resourceful.”

The corners of her mouth lifted a fraction of an inch. “It was, wasn’t it?”

“What do you say we put these babies to good use?”

  “I think I’d like that.”

  And they did.

The next time Sam opened his eyes, full-on daylight streamed into the room. Alex’s skin glowed in the sunbeam. He awakened her with a soft kiss on the lips.

When her eyes opened, he waved a foil packet under her nose. “One left. Wanna shower together?”

Delicate blond eyebrows arched in surprise. “If you think that’s wise.”

“Long as you’re not planning to take pictures.”

“Only mental images.” She ran to the bathroom, naked and laughing.

Alex stepped into the shower and turned on the spray. He slid in behind her. The water trickled down her breasts and the flat plane of her stomach. She arched, pressing her back into him, until her sweet ass nestled against his groin.

He grabbed her hips and held her there. “Perfect.”

“For you maybe.” She wriggled against his growing erection. “I need you inside me.”

Alex leaned forward and spread her palms flat against the shower wall, pure temptation in the waggle of that delectable butt.

  “I don’t think so.”

She glanced back over her shoulder. “You don’t?”

  “Nope. We’re not clean yet.”

  She giggled. “So dirty.”

“That’s what I thought.” He dumped shower gel into his palm and started soaping her up. He ran his hands over every part of her—arms, legs, tits, ass. He took his time working up a lather on her cheeks and breasts and then ran his palms slowly up her thighs.
