He was rescued by Royal Marine Sergeant Pen Farthing.
Their friendship resulted in Pen making sure that Nowzad traveled back to the UK when his tour of duty was over. But he also knew that many other Soldiers and Marines were being forced to leave their furry friends behind—something that Pen was determined to change.
“These soldiers are not only a salvation for the animal; the dog or cat are often described as ‘lifelines’ to their soldier, providing a respite from war, a moment of peace, home and love.
When the soldier’s tour of duty comes to an end, it is unthinkable to leave their four legged comrade that they’ve bonded with, behind.”
The charity now helps many animals and also funds an animal shelter in Kabul. Animals have been rescued from Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Libya and the Ukraine, and been sent to start new lives in the UK, US, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Jordan and South Africa.

Meet eight year-old Tanner!
He’s from St. Petersburg, Florida and belongs to model, TV host and fitness enthusiast, Justin Maina.
Tanner is a Shepherd-Chow-Lab and Maybe Something Else . . . a little bit of everything and a lot cute! His favorite food is ice cream. Rocky Road?
Tanner is just getting started in his modeling career.
“I’m very fortunate to have landed this book cover. I’m very grateful. My first job was earlier this year with my dad, Justin. I’m digging this industry so far and looking forward to the next opportunity. I’m a beachy kind of dog, my nickname’s Salty Dog, so I’m very laid back and appreciative. I’m living the life here in Treasure Island!”
In a typical day, Tanner enjoys roaming around the house looking to please, play, kiss and make new friends. He also loves laying out on the dock, swimming in the pool, running with Justin and his personal favorite, going out on the boat.
And Tanner really loves his dad. Justin saved him from the dog pound? “I knew when I first saw him that he was the one!”
And I think that Justin was very lucky to have found a pup like Tanner.
“Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none”—this is one of my favourite sayings. Oh, and ‘Be Nice!’ That’s another. Or maybe, ‘Where’s the chocolate?’
I get asked where my ideas come from—they come from everywhere. From walks with my dog on the beach, from listening to conversations in pubs and shops, where I lurk unnoticed with my notebook. And of course, ideas come from things I’ve seen or read, places I’ve been and people I meet.
And of course, I love watching ballroom dancing on TV. I tried to learn Salsa once. My partner, Edwin who is mentioned in the dedication, said to me, “Stop marching and stop leading! You’re supposed to look sexy.” So I shall stick to writing about dance instead and imagine that I can do the box splits and then leap to my feet with the grace of a young gazelle. Yes, in my imagination.
