“Yep.”
“She’ll never forgive me.” Looking up, she saw Dick was staring right back at her. “You’re not even going to say anything to make me feel better?”
“Why should I? You almost got her killed, not to mention yourself. Are you so desperate for attention you’ll put yourself and your friend in danger?”
She didn’t know him, and yet he’d know who she really was, looking past the wall she placed for others to see. “You don’t know me.”
“I know you. I know the kind of person you are. You’ve just lost your best friend for being a selfish, manipulative bitch. Grow up.”
The tears she’d been trying to keep in started to fall. There was no way to stop them. “I know. Okay. I know what a shit friend I’ve been. Jessica has always been there for me, and I didn’t give a shit. I’m a horrible, horrible person.” She broke down, wishing her world could just end now.
She expected Dick to leave so she was surprised when he started to tap her back. “We all make mistakes. Some of us more than others.”
“I can’t go through life knowing she hates me.”
“Then win her back, Lydia. Change for her.”
Sobbing against Dick’s chest, she didn’t know how she was going to win her friend back, but she knew she was going to try.
Epilogue
Summer
“Is that normal?” Jessica asked, looking toward Simon. Tiny, Eva, and the family had brought the family to Piston County for the summer picnic. She watched as Simon sat beside Tabitha showing her some kind of playing cards. In the last few months she’d never seen Simon be so attentive to another girl. The moment Tabitha showed up, the love was clear for anyone to see.
Lexie and Judi were both sitting holding babies, and Eva was swollen with child.
“They’re going to make for an interesting couple I think,” Snake, her husband, said. They’d gotten married in April after they’d spent two months planning the big day. Leaning up against him, she smiled.
“Why?”
“They’re from two different clubs. Devil and Tiny are being amicable for the kids. Simon helped Tabitha or something like that. I wasn’t actually there to witness it.” He played with strands of her hair, twirling them around his finger.
“You like playing with my hair, don’t you?”
“Jess, my little bitch, I love everything about you.” He cupped her cheek, tilting her head back so that he could kiss her deeply. She melted against him. It had been over six months since she’d been taken by the monster who’d marked her leg. She’d since had the scar turned into a beautiful rose on her thigh. It didn’t matter how much she tried to forget about it; it wasn’t possible.
Master was still out there somewhere. He could enter their lives at any moment. None of them knew who he was, but she had faith in Snake. He was going to find Master, and kill him.
“What is going on in that head of yours?” he asked.
“Nothing. I’m just glad I married you.”
She couldn’t help but look toward the picnic table. Lydia was standing there talking with Dick. Ever since Lydia got out of the hospital she’d been with Dick. She was also trying to make it up to Jessica, but she wasn’t interested.
“Do you think you’ll ever forgive her?” Snake asked.
“No, I don’t.”
“Just keep telling yourself that, babe.” Snake kissed her lips, plunging his tongue into her mouth.
This was why she could easily hate Lydia. Lydia had almost cost her the love of her life. Snake was the love of her life, her husband, and she didn’t want to live in a world where he wasn’t hers.
