Meet Me at Midnight (Forbidden Flowers Book 2)

I would be lying if I said I’m not just a little envious of Corinne. Harrison Devereaux is a fine catch. Don’t mistake me, though, I’m happy for her. I’m a sucker for a good love story, and Corinne and Harrison’s story is one of the best I’ve heard, probably because it comes with the most risk. And yet somehow, they’re finding a way to make it work. It’s just that I’ve reached the point where I’m starting to notice the vacancy beside me in my own bed every night. The vacancy that’s been there my whole life for one reason or another.

Sometimes my reasons for specializing in women’s sexual health hits a little too close to home.

Corinne uncrosses her legs as if she knows her time is almost up. “Harrison and I spent almost every night together after that,” she says with a quiet laugh. “Every day one of us would say to the other, ‘Meet me at midnight.’ We met in my bedroom. Or his. Or in his office when we knew the coast was clear. Or the home gym, where we gave new meaning to the terms bench press and squat thrust. And one night we even met in the wine cellar.” Her gaze briefly grows wistful, then brightens as she tucks her chin and giggles. “But, hey, by the end of the week, he had regained his stamina. He went from being the one-minute superstud to the forty-minute marathon man.” She pretends to swoon. “I didn’t think it could get any better.” She looks me dead in the eye. “I was wrong.”

I smile at her candor and the hearts that are twirling around her head like Cupid’s halo. “How did things go after you returned to Yale? Were the two of you able to see each other?”

“We made time,” she says with a mischievous bob of her head. “He came up to see me a few times, and I was home for a week over spring break.”

  “You didn’t go anywhere special?”

She shakes her head. “Susanna and I had talked about going to Cancun, but after Christmas break, I wanted to spend that time with Harrison. So I told Susanna I wasn’t feeling like going anywhere, you know, with finals and graduation coming up. So we just went back to North Carolina and spent time at the beach or hanging around her pool.”

“And Susanna still doesn’t know you’re in a relationship with her father?”

Corinne blinks and looks down. “No, but I think she’s beginning to suspect something’s going on.”

  “Why?”

“Because she’s noticed how happy he is . . . and how happy I am . . . and I think she’d caught us looking at each other when we didn’t think anyone was watching.” She sighs heavily. “It’s getting harder to keep our relationship a secret, especially from Susanna. She’s asked me several times if I’m dating someone, and when I ask her why she’s asking, she says it’s because I look like I am. She told me just last week that I’m acting like I’m in love and wanted to know why I was being so secretive about it.”

“How much longer do you think you and Harrison can keep this up?” I ask.

She graduated a month ago and just took a job in DC working for the new North Carolina senator who happens to be friends with Harrison. They’ll be running in the same social circles now. Hiding their relationship will be harder than ever.

“I don’t know,” she says with a note of worry. “I think we’re both struggling with it. Last week, we were at the same charity dinner, and just sitting at a different table than his was hard. For both of us. I had to watch helplessly as other women flirted with him, and he told me later that seeing me dance with Senator McMaster’s son had been almost too much for him to bear.” Her fingers twist around one another on her lap. “I don’t think either one of us can let this go on much longer. Either we’re going to have to go public or end it completely.”

“Is ending your relationship even an option?”

A pathetic laugh huffs out of her as she shakes her head. “No.”

“So, it’s go public or bust?”

This time her laughter is more amused. “Yeah, something like that.” She sighs heavily. “I just don’t know how I’m going to tell Susanna.”

I don’t envy her position. Susanna will either understand and support Corinne and her father, even if it takes her a while to come around, or she will end the friendship and never speak to Corinne again. But based on what I heard today, I think it will be the former. Susanna sounds like she’s got just as good of a head on her shoulders as Corinne does. And you can’t simply cut the best friend you’ve known all your life out of the picture completely, especially when there’s a good possibility she might become your stepmom.

But that’s a whole other issue for another day.

Right now, I need a cold shower, a bottle of wine, and my vibrator.

Maybe it’s time I started looking for a man of my own.
