  Connor felt the wind rush into his room, heard the words and he was overjoyed.

  Before He left Connor, God sent a car down the street that was “pumping the bass” to reinforce the point of how He liked to work indirectly.

  The sound of the car woke up Connor’s sister, Caitlin, who sat up straight in her bed looking around.

  “It’s okay, Caitlin. It’s just a car outside, pumping the bass. Go back to sleep.”

  Connor knew, in truth, God had sent that car down their street.

  Caitlin looked at Connor and wondered why he was being so nice to her and also why was he wide awake in the middle of the night.

  She didn’t usually like it when people touched her, but it felt nice when Connor touched the top of her head.

  It also felt good to Connor to take care of his sister.

  And that’s when Connor finally “got it” about how God liked to communicate indirectly, like through the wind and through “pumping the bass.”

  Then Connor remembered a Christmas movie he liked and said:

  “Every time an angel gets its wings, a car starts pumping the bass.”

  And Connor knew the truth.

  Connor climbed into bed and tucked his covers underneath his chin.

  As he looked out the window, he saw a star shoot through the sky and he knew his dad was with him and that he’d be with him, no matter where he went.

  He’d always be there for Connor and Caitlin and Sandy.

  “Goodnight, Dad,” Connor said. He closed his eyes and went to sleep.

  About the Story

  I recently sat down to write a letter to my niece and nephew, Connor and Caitlin, about their dad, my brother–who died recently after a two year bout with cancer–and about an hour later this story appeared on my screen.

  If I am being honest, Tim helped me write it as a message to his kids and his wife and the rest of us that he’s okay.
