said she had forgotten them for 30 years, so she did not need them. She was just sorry the letters were lost. Johnny got one ring and I got the other. Kate got an enamel brooch that looked like a flower. Dad got the domino and kept it on his desk. Mr. Levine got the kettle. He cleaned it and got rid of the bitumen, and it came out as a beautiful copper kettle that he kept in his workshop.

  It was a great day for us. Johnny and I decided that we would not talk about it to our classmates, I cannot remember why, but we never did. I guess it was more precious that way: it was our secret. Each of us got a chain to wear our ring under our T-shirts, and we both wear our ring to this day. It is our lucky charm.

  We never went treasure hunting again. We knew we could not beat this fabulous day.

  Backrub got a treasure too. As soon as we got home, he stole one of Dad's slippers and disappeared into the night.
