"Mom," she summoned up the courage to say what she had to say. "I love you, and I'm sorry you had to come all this way, but I think you should leave."
"Alyssa, be reasonable," her mother said in a voice that meant 'be obedient.'
"I love Hannah," she said, and despite the gravity of this situation she felt like giggling, but she saved that for later. "And we need to talk about our plans. I hope that you all can accept me, but I'm not going to hide who I am from you. And I plan to be a sister to Martha, even if you decided you didn't want to be her mother."
Mrs. Barnes now looked more confused than angry. "You were always so good," she said it like a prayer.
Hannah put a hand on Alyssa's shoulder, "I'll call her a cab," she said.
And a few minutes later, Mrs. Barnes was gone.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Alyssa went to the counter and unplugged her own phone from the charger and powered it on. When it started up, she saw that she had fourteen texts, eleven of which were from her mother.
Mom: Can you give me a call, hon?
Mom: Hey, Aly, call me soon. Love, Mom
Mom: Call me
Mom: Are you busy? Can I call?
Mom: Where are you?
Mom: Need to talk ASAP
Mom: Call now
Mom: Plans for tonight?
Mom: I'll be there at 6
Mom: Tried to call, you didn't pick up
Mom: On my way to your place
Alyssa set her phone back down and went to sit by Hannah on the couch. She sat close, curled into Hannah's side. "So, how was that for a meet the parents night?" she asked.
Hannah wasn't in the mood to joke. "You said you loved me."
Alyssa sat back up so that she could face her, and she nervously licked her lips. "Yeah. I do, I mean. I love you. And I want to move to Dallas with you. I don't want distance to end this, not when we've only just started."
Hannah grinned, "I'm not moving to Dallas."
"What?" Alyssa's eyes widened, "They didn't give you the deal? Do they not have ears?" She was ready to march down to that record company and give them a piece of her mind.
But Hannah grabbed her hand to keep her from doing anything drastic. "They gave me a different deal, actually. I'm going to have to go down to Dallas a few times, but I can be based out of Chicago. They're opening up a satellite office."
"That's amazing!" Alyssa lunged forward and swallowed Hannah up in a huge hug. "You're happy, right? That's what you wanted?"
"As long as I'm with you, I'm happy," she said. "I love you." She kissed Alyssa. And then they were laughing and hugging and even crying a little. Before they could get too carried away, Hannah pulled back. "So what's this about another sister?" she asked.
Alyssa smiled, "I'll tell you in the morning," she promised, and kissed her again.
Alyssa would have laughed out loud if anyone had told her when she first moved to the city that she would end up in love with her roommate. She had thought she'd known herself well enough to have a path figured out. Now, she knew that she had more to figure out, but she had a beautiful woman by her side and a lifetime to grow. She'd figured out more about herself in the past two months than she'd ever thought possible.
And if she ever saw Nancy again she knew that she'd say two things: I completely understand now and thank you.
