She hiccupped, and covered her mouth. “I understand,” she said, trying to keep the raging emotion and sadness out of her voice. If that's how he truly felt, she didn't want him to feel even worse. It's not like he had any control of the situation. If he was open to the possibility, certainly there could be other options, right? “I'm sorry I brought it up. It's just, I couldn't help but think about it …”

“Shhh,” Lawrence said, taking her hand and pulling her onto his lap. “Why the tears?”

“It's just a silly dream,” she replied, wiping her face with the back of her hand, and trying to control the crying.

“Come on now, there's no reason to apologize, and if we're going to be together, I want you to be able to talk with me. About anything. What did I say?”

“You said you didn't want children.”

“Now did I?” Lawrence asked. “Is that what you heard?”

She nodded, not able to say anything else.

“Actually, I think I told you that I couldn't father a child. I never said anything about if I wanted children or not.”

Lily knew then what it meant to say, “Hope springs eternal.” How easily she turned from sad to a glimmer of happiness, of hope, of all her wishes already coming true.

Ever so hesitantly, she asked, “What does that mean? What are you saying?”

“Well, while I, personally, cannot have children, it doesn't mean that young buck in there can't,” he said, nodding toward Trevor.

As if he knew that they were talking about him, Trevor took that moment to look up at them, and he smiled.

“And, who knows, after the way we've been going at it the past few days, there may already be a little Anima-Pack-Justice growing in there,” he said, rubbing her belly for good measure.

“Really,” she all but squealed. What in the world was wrong with her? Soon enough, she'd be wearing her pink fuzzy sweaters while baking blueberry muffins.

“Really,” he said, kissing her on the tip of the nose. “What say we go break the news to the young pup in there?”

She nodded her head in agreement, and went to stand up. Instead, Lawrence picked her up in his arms, cradling her as if she didn't weigh a pound. She laughed, throwing her head back and feeling the happiness surge throughout her body.

“Wait a moment,” she asked, as he turned toward the bedroom. She looked out over the city, and beyond, and gave a final ‘thank you’ up to the wishing gods. They'd been working overtime.

As they walked back inside, Trevor pulled back the covers on her side of the bed, and patted the spot.

“Hey, Trev,” Lawrence said, a lightness in his tone, “know anyone who would perform an unconventional wedding ceremony? Looks like we're officially going to start a family.”
