Ithrin sighed in a pained way. “Yes, you’d better forget about that, all right.”

At another point, I spotted Lisitha. My stepsisters’ friend was scowling like anything. She must have been chewed up inside from jealousy. Later, she came up to me with a syrupy smile and said she was SO happy for me.

“I know,” I said, with a smile of my own. “I’m so happy for me too.”

  It was quite delicious.

We were so tired after a long night of dancing and eating and a little too much drinking as well, that it was probably a good thing we’d already taken care of consummating the wedding. I collapsed into bed and didn’t stir until I heard the clock of the High Court chime noon.

Ithrin was awake before me. I found him packing away his spell books.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I don’t need them now,” he said. “I think I’m done with seances. I don’t need to speak to the dead anymore.”

“Are you sure? You don’t have to do this because of me. If it’s important to you…”

“It’s not because of you. Well, it is, but—only because I see the future now. Not the past. Different things have become important, that’s all.” He put his arms around me. “It’s time to bury my dead, Ellara.”

“Yes…” I smiled at him. “We have a lot of living to do.”

  About the Author

Lidiya Foxglove has always loved a good fairy tale, whether it’s sweet or steamy, and she likes to throw in a little of both. Sometimes she thinks she ought to do something other than reading and writing, but that would require doing more laundry. So…never mind.
