  Several days later Holmes and I delivered Mrs. Pemberton’s share personally. We were distraught at not being able to reunite her with her George, but at least we had ensured a better future for her.

  Holmes was also able to tell her, in all honesty, that her husband’s last thoughts had been of her—and that he had gone with a smile on his face.
