He hit a switch by the door and the center panels in the ceiling slid apart. The stars glittered, and moonbeams slanted through the dark air.
“Pretty,” Otto said, but he stared right into Jessa’s eyes.
Jessa leaned in and cupped Otto’s face, thumbs at the corners of his mouth. His blood-red nails looked black in the dark, but Otto’s pale eyes shone like the starlight.
“After the train wreck,” Otto whispered, “I sometimes think I’m only dreaming you.”
Jessa touched his lips to Otto’s and leaned away again. “We don’t always lose, Otto. Sometimes we win. I wish Rune had remembered that. Our father told us that we had powers, but the only real power is love. I love you, Otto. And I’m right here.”
He turned his lips into the palm Otto cupped his face with and let Otto pull him closer. “I won’t ever leave you again, baby prince. You are my fated love and the one I pick. Mine,” he whispered, swallowing the whimper Jessa let out.
Love.
He had not thought he’d ever hear it, but Otto said it again. “I love you, Jess.”
He pushed into Otto’s embrace, meeting teeth and tongue, letting Otto bring him slowly down until he lay on the warm earth, surrounded by the fragrance of flowers and the light of the stars.
“I can see you,” Otto whispered.
Tiny lights lined the inside of the greenhouse and joined with the stars and the moon to paint the world in shades of gray like the granite that once lined Celestine City.
Sitting on his heels, Otto pulled off his shirt, and then stuffed it under Jessa’s head. Though stronger than Otto, Jessa loved Otto’s chivalrous gestures. His words seldom conveyed his emotions, so it was his actions Jessa counted on.
He trembled as Otto’s hands slipped under his shirt, gliding over the body chain he’d secretly bought at the jewelry festival. The push of Otto’s thumbs against his nipples sucked Jessa’s breath away, and he arched, hissing as his cock brushed against Otto’s thigh. He grabbed Otto’s ass, dragging him down, grinding against him.
“Hungry boy.”
“Yessss.”
His fangs broke through, and he let his mouth fall open. Otto consumed him, and Jessa burned. He wrapped Otto in his arms and legs, but he was parched, thirst mad and starved. Cold touched his skin, and his nipples ached. Vaguely, he was aware of Otto rising above him, pulling his clothes off. He spread his legs, his dick molten metal against his belly, arms wide. The fire raced under his skin, burning bright everywhere Otto touched him.
“Mine. All mine,” Otto whispered, trailing each word with a kiss.
Jessa panted and arched his neck, feeling the scrape of Otto’s teeth. What if…
“Bite me.”
The nip was sharp zinging pain, but it wasn’t—“Feed!”
Otto swiped a tongue along Jessa’s jaw and bit his bottom lip. “I can’t. I’d hurt you. My teeth aren’t right.”
“Bite me.” His voice thickened and rumbled. “Please.” Otto cupped his head, his hands solid and firm and strong. Jessa melted, a laugh tickling his tongue. “I want you.”
“You have me,” Otto said. “You’re my light, Jess. Go ahead and feed.”
The words floated in Jessa’s head, dreamlike and impossible. He remembered the welling drop of blood Otto had withheld from him. The hypnotic scent that pulsed in Otto’s veins inches from his teeth, whooshing like a constant wind in the trees.
And now…
“Fated,” Otto said. “Forever.”
Because even love begged the breath of life. A breath that escaped Jessa’s lips in a soft sibilance. “Yesss.”
Sitting up, Otto reached back for his pants with a grin. “Always prepared,” he said as he rummaged through his pockets.
“You brought Band-Aids?”
Otto barked a laugh. “Brat.”
“Baby prince.”
“Yes,” Otto agreed.
Jessa pulled his knees to his chest and shuddered at the touch of Otto’s fingers. The slide inside brought a sharp burn with it. Jessa pulled air between his teeth. Goosebumps erupted on his skin. The touch on his gland sent shocks of pleasure through him, and he grabbed his dick, squeezing it in his fist.
“Oh fuck.” So good.
He rocked on Otto’s fingers, the bop-bop-bop on his gland tearing groans out of him. “Now. Now. I can’t hold off.”
A shocking emptiness followed his words, seconds before the push of Otto’s dick split him open, bathed him in heat and stuffed him to bursting. He held still, absorbing the pain, its sharpness rolling away in a languid throb. He stroked his dick, rolling it into his fist.
“There you go,” Otto murmured.
“Good,” he said.
“Oh yeah.”
Otto slung his arms under Jessa’s knees, rolling him tight, stabbing deep into his belly. He nipped Jessa’s lips between kisses.
“Like it?” Otto asked.
“Fuck yeah.” His voice squeaked.
Otto grinned. “Gonna buy you a big fat dildo and watch you fuck yourself.”
Jessa wasn’t exactly sure why the thought of Jessa fucking and sucking himself was so enticing to Otto, but his dick jerked at the idea too. Weird.
“Faster.”
Otto pumped his hips, jarring Jessa’s body with thrust after thrust. He bent low, his pants hot against Jessa’s cheek.
“Bite… bite,” he grunted. “Bite, you gorgeous vamp.”
And Jessa reared as though Otto had called on the Ellowyn in him. His fangs erupted to their full length in a split second of agony, and he sank them into Otto’s neck. Blood poured into his mouth. Rich as the earth. Sharp with metal. Sweet like the moldering of leaves. The taste and aroma swirled like a fog, smothering him, pushing him down in the dark. He clutched Otto’s shoulders and struggled to pull himself into the light, panicking as the blood pooled in his belly, weighing him down.
But suddenly he gasped, and the blood turned to sugar in his mouth. Exhilaration sang in his veins. Otto’s hoots of joy filled his ears.
“Fuck, yeah, my goddamn vampire!”
He laughed, warbling as Otto pounded him harder and harder. His ass burned, his balls full and achy, about to burst. He whipped his dick, blind to everything but the stars and the wisps of mist across the moon and the dig of Otto’s fingers in his hips as he pulled Jessa’s ass hard against his crotch, buried deep inside him.
Otto’s climax shook through Jessa’s body, and a fire as hot as the core of the earth shot out of his dick in blissful spurts.
Otto fell on him, and Jessa clutched him closer, the beat of Otto’s heart the sound of his own.

Looking for His
A line of light spread on the horizon, and Isaac rolled off the picnic table at the first rest stop he’d come to outside of Comity. After washing up in the bathroom, he trudged along the highway a few minutes later. Mateo had told him the name of the whore with Brillen and where he’d run, and that’s where Isaac was going. He was probably a fool to leave the people who cared for him, but Jessa didn’t need him anymore, and he doubted Rune would ever return—and Rune was waiting for him.
Calling him.

The Second Bloom
The sun was high, shining down on the quiet yard. Birds sang, and a breeze carried the scents of the garden onto the veranda. Jessa was half asleep on a chaise lounge under an umbrella. Otto sat beside him, staring at the blue surface of the pool.
A dragonfly hovered above the water, lifted, and motored off.
August.
Only five months since Otto had stood here with that putz Prosper at his side, staring derisively at a freckled crossling.
He touched his throat. His skin tickled, and the touch of his fingers awakened Jessa’s scent in his nostrils. Stretching over the arm of the chair, he stroked along one of Jessa’s red-tipped fingers and watched the smile form on his face.
“You’re the high prince now.”
The smile faded. Jessa opened
an eye and tilted his head. “Mal is higher. I’m yours.”
Otto smiled. “You can be anything you want, Jess.”
“Yours,” Jessa said, turning his head away again and closing his eyes.
Mine.
Otto drank his lemonade, wishing it had bourbon in it, but not wishing it enough to go get any. He watched the faint ripple on the water’s surface and enjoyed the heat of the pavement baking into his heels.
Somewhere in the mountain that loomed beyond the garden was a treasure worth killing for. An obsession that had endured ten thousand years.
It meant nothing to Otto.
He turned to gaze at Jessa’s face again. Perspiration beaded on the side of his nose. His hair was tangled from his braids, his nail polish chipped in places. Otto’s blossom. He wanted to go searching for his flower that afternoon. It blooms twice, he said. Early spring and late summer.
Maybe this was Otto’s second bloom. And his last.
“I love you,” he murmured, watching the return of Jessa’s smile.
“I love you too.”
Love was the only worthy obsession anyway.
Looking back across the quiet pool, Otto watched the fog slide out of the trees and disappear in the sunlight.

The Promise
Six years after the Upheaval…
* * *
Asa didn’t know his dad was experimenting on vampires until one of them broke into their house.
The bang of the front door flying open and Lady’s barking jerked him awake. His dad’s yell boomed. “Stay upstairs!”
But he crawled out of bed despite the order, patting at the air until his palm landed on Lady’s neck. She sniffed at the bottom of the door, whining and pulling when he dragged her away.
“No. Stay.”
She pushed against his leg, but he squeezed past her, the hair on the back of his neck rising at the eerie cry that came from below. A vampire sound. Like an ululation.
Trying not to make any noise, he crept downstairs, crossed the entrance hall to the living room, and hugged the edge of the doorframe. A vampire crouched in a corner by the entertainment center that still held their TV and family photos. It spat at them, bloody tear tracks on its cheeks, staring out of a gaunt, hollow-eyed face.
Nothing about it resembled the vicious creatures that had swarmed out of sewers and gutters and holes in the earth after the fracking accident that had destroyed their cities. Crushing every human life was the only thing they lived for now.
Asa’s dad and three of his private cops stood around the cowering vamp. It hissed at them.
His dad put his hands on his knees and bent closer to it.
“Careful,” said Larry, one of the cops. All three pointed their guns at it.
Asa had no reason to feel sorry for a vampire. None of them did. The quakes and floods after the Upheaval had killed more humans than vampires, but it was vampires that ruled the rubble. Still… His stomach twisted when the thing pushed itself back into the corner. Its chattering teeth clacked out a strange chitter.
“I can make you feel better,” said Asa’s dad.
“You… kill me.”
“I have food for you. Which is generous, given you broke in here to kill me. Now lie down on the floor with your arms at your side.”
“I… serve… the true heart.”
“And who is that?”
“You take ours. We take… yours,” it said, its bloody finger pointing at the same time it turned its gaze on Asa.
Shit.
He stared, wide-eyed, as his dad swung his head around.
“Get upstairs.”
But Asa didn’t have time. Not that he would’ve gone. The vampire wasn’t a fighter. It was… sick. And they didn’t get sick. Something wasn’t right and—
The vampire leaped.
His dad’s cops fired, and the thing jerked and crashed into the entertainment center, shattering one of the doors before it crumpled to the carpet.
His dad’s mouth moved, but Asa’s ears rang with the sound of the gunshots. One of the cops glanced back at him.
A vein swelled in his dad’s temple, and Larry nodded.
Strange that they still wore their old uniforms. They drove their old patrol cars too.
Larry approached him. “Why don’t you go upstairs? Let us clean this up.”
As though a trashcan had fallen over and spilled garbage everywhere.
The vampire had bled red the same as any human
. “We take… yours,” it had said. Yours what? Had the vampire had a family? A kid?
Larry took Asa’s arm at the elbow and nudged him around. Asa’s gaze swept across the entertainment center and dropped to a photograph on the floor.
“Need help up?” asked Larry.
He shook his head. “What was wrong with it?”
“It needed to feed.”
“It was starving.”
“That’s good. Means we’re winning.”
But that wasn’t true. Every day was borrowed time before the vampires won.
Asa brushed past him and returned to the living room. “Dad?”
His father grimaced and stepped in front of him. “Don’t look at that. You shouldn’t be down here.”
“What’s going on?”
“It got through the lines somehow.”
“You knew it.”
I can make you feel better. I have food for you…
His dad gave a short laugh. “It’s a monster. I didn’t know it. Now go to bed.”
“I’m seventeen.”
“I know how old you are. I’m trying to protect you.”
“Some of the sentries are seventeen.”
His dad scrubbed his face with his palms before letting out a sigh. “Can we talk about this in the morning?”
