“My lieutenants are in attendance as well as the second in command of Las Furia. It is clear that you are acting in Joaquín’s stead as he was invited to this meeting and sent you in his place. I can acknowledge the alpha and you must accept that. The Acuerdo are clear. She is the human alpha.”

  Arc’s face paled. The details eluded me, but I knew, down to my marrow, that what Anton had just done for me was an affront. The Acuerdo were the rules that had governed the packs and the division of territory, the political spectrum of the Amazon for over four hundred years. There was no turning back from this. Arc shook his head, gripping the back of his neck with a hand and averting his eyes.

  “Joaquín’s not going to be happy.”

  I stood up from the table abruptly. “two a.m.,” I stated. And then I left. Joaquín and I needed to have a discussion. It was no longer acceptable for him to ignore my position. The man could no longer remain in denial about my status as the rebel leader. Today’s revelations had made it clear that his difficulty in accepting me as a leader of my own people, as an agent for the protection of changelings in my country, had put us all at risk. And that was no longer acceptable. There was a missile out there with Las Furia written on it that demanded I stop battling with his hopes for a subservient mate and make my role in all of this clear.
