  VII. An activist who was the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party and the Rainbow Coalition. In December 1969, he was killed in his bed during a police raid. A jury ruled it a “justifiable homicide.” However, in 1982, after thirteen years of litigation, city, county, and federal authorities reached a $1.85 million settlement with a group that included relatives of Hampton.
