Boss

by Scarlett Ross

“Miss Adams. Going for a walk? Might I join you? I received news that you might be making an early exit today?”

I turn abruptly and find Grayson Gamble with a handkerchief extended. What the in the holy fuck is he doing here. His eyes relay a new emotion I can’t quite put my finger on but considering what I just endured I am without the ability for coherent thought. Is it compassion? I doubt it. He’s probably in on it too despite being a competitor. Why is standing outside as if waiting for me to come storming out? He said he received news which is suspicious, considering the entire horrid meeting was only less than a few minutes ago.

I reach for his hand, and at the last minute, spit. Fuck dignity. It’s all laying on the boardroom floor. I have none left. He calmly takes the extended handkerchief and wipes off the offending spit.

“Understandable, given what you just went through, but I assure you, I am here as an adversary. Might we have a word please?”

  “Fuck you,” I choke out.

He shrugs and reaches into his back pocket. He withdraws his Louis Vuitton wallet with such a lazy elegance I want to spit at him again. He unfolds many bills and extends them to me. I blanche and move another step back.

  “I’m not for sale.”

He laughs lightly. “Cab fare as you seem to be without any means.”

“I have many means. And I don’t need your pity pay. I was never in any important meetings. I don’t know secret passcodes. My attempts at obtaining information were in the hands of one of their many spies. I don’t even know if they had some grand plans on how they could destroy your empire. I was just their assistant, and they used me well. I wasn’t important enough to them to be part in anything other than what was apparently a sick game. So, you see, I’m of no use to you.”

Grayson approaches again and offers me a new handkerchief from the same pocket. Wow, he must get spit on many times a day.

“No pity party, Miss Adams. Only a very legitimate business offer.”

“And what would that be, Mr. Gamble? Planning a hit on the men of Monroe Enterprises and need an accomplice?”

He grins menacingly. “Although I can't say I haven't possibly entertained the idea before, no that is not my business offer. I offer you three things I think you are sorely in need of. Revenge. Comeuppance. Monetary gain.”

“No thanks. I’m done. I have a Harvard degree. I am resilient. There isn’t a hell I can’t face and not get through now. So, thanks but no thanks. When I get my revenge, I will be the one to do so. But I need a little time to prepare and look for work as I just now became an unemployed assistant. So, whatever offer you have, I decline. The race is not always to the swift I guess.”

I walk away and start the long walk home.

“Miss Adams, a question before you go? What if the offer was for you to be the boss?”

  THE END

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Who knew taking this journey would allow me such an amazing chance to meet so many wonderful women and appreciate more all the ones in my life?

To my mom, you are my touchstone of who I am lost without in every way. This book would have never been written without you stepping in to take charge where I faltered. Thank you, mommy, for always believing in me. You are the epitome of the boss lady of the south, our family and so many hearts. There is no way to tell you how much you mean to me, so I will just have to try better in person.

Mary Kathryn, my birthday sister and champion, I can’t express my gratitude in words. This book would never have been anything but a blurb without your support and kindness. Wine is on me forever! You gave me so much blood, sweat, and tears and I love you so much for it.

My sister from another mister Robin B. for being such a salaciously sweet supporter, amazing friend and helping me with last minute edits. How much of a lifesaver were you? Get ready for some more sexiness with Evan in the next book, I will need your input.

To the best PA in all the world of literature, my soulmate in southern endeavors and guardian angel, Savannah. You keep me going and grounded, my lovely friend. I am blessed to have found you. Coffee is on me forever! Insert our kisses emojis here!

Sabrina, my best friend for over half my life, thank you for being my port in the storm when things got rocky. We will always be together, sipping wine and talking about anything and everything our wandering minds can think of. It makes my soul happy to have you with me for the next chapters of our life and they are going to be our best ones yet, I know it.

To the titillating three: Heather, Kelly, and Rachael; thanks for your support and friendship. I’m so lucky to have met you all and scored three more best friends. Hands down the sexiest, silliest and sweetest squad I could ever hope for. You three are some incredible women I look up to.

And mostly there would be no Scarlett if not for the support of my original sugar and mentor, MJ. Thank you for answering an unknown writer and giving insight. Your words and friendship made me who I aspired to be, and my gratitude will forever be with you. You are my most favorite Jezebel!

For all my supporters and readers, you are my greatest treasures. Kisses to y’all, and please keep reading, my sugars!

On my own note, women are the bosses in this oppressed world we live in and never forget it. Stay boss in all you do; we run this world whether it’s acknowledged or not. I believe in all of you and your fierceness.

Finally, to my grandmother Marjorie, for the writer’s gene I inherited courtesy of you and all the beautiful stories we got to tell one another. Thank you for caring about this book despite all you had going on.You were a true boss lady, and I love you. I look forward to seeing you again one day and having a very long chat.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Scarlett Ross knew she wanted to write since third grade she was tasked to write about an inanimate object and tell a story. She chose to write about a green pillow in the classroom’s corner and make it into an alien who took her on a great adventure throughout space. Thus, a creative mind was born, one that she tried to harness in writing, singing, and acting.

An only child growing up in Kentucky, she later went on to major in theater at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has a BA in Creative Writing and is pursuing an MFA with a concentration in screenwriting.

A wife and mother, she now enjoys watching old black and white horror films with her son, pineapple covered pizza, and reading in the solace of her jacuzzi bathtub. She is intensely private and rocks Jackie O sunglasses in almost all her photos. But if you hear nineties alternative rock music blaring out of headphones at Starbucks, that’s most likely her.
