“Well I don’t even know if you’ll be with me anyway after me telling you all this private stuff.”

“Well maybe I will, you never know.”

“God,” I huffed, slamming my empty cup down on the floor. “What is it about you, huh? You’re like a drug to me. I can’t stay away from you. You make me do things that I normally don’t do, I want you to know that.”

  “Well the feeling’s mutual.”

“Oh yeah? Well why don’t you prove it then?”

I don’t know what got into her, but she lunged forward, wrapping her arms around my neck and pressing her lips to mine. It took me by such surprise that at first I didn’t know what to do, it was as if I had to kick start my brain to process the moment that was happening between us. Once I wised up I kicked into gear, not wanting to miss the opportunity she was giving me. I wrapped my arms around her waist and flipped her over, laying her gently against the floor. In all honesty it was hard to be gentle with her, because all I wanted to do was devour her body and claim her as mine. I pressed against her as she opened her legs for me, a position I had been craving to be in since I first laid eyes on her. I kissed her deeper than I ever had before, satisfying yet another craving. She tasted wonderful, and I knew that was just the beginning of what I would taste of her that night.

Her hand grabbed at the back of my shirt, willing me to take it off. I sat back and obeyed her request, pulling it up over my head and throwing it off to the side.

“Oh my god, you’re in such good shape!” she panted as she ran her hands down my stomach. I was a proud man in that moment, proud to show her the body I had worked so hard at perfecting.

I stared at her with hungry eyes and dove back down on top of her, kissing along her neck, grazing her skin with my teeth. She moaned beneath me and I moved south, pulling up her shirt and tracing along her soft skin with my tongue. A second later I had her shirt and her bra off to the side and I was pressed against her perfect breasts.

I didn’t know how far she wanted to take this moment at first, but when she moved her hips against mine I smiled with confidence, knowing exactly what she was wanting from me. I smoothly removed her pants and underwear, taking mine off as well while continuing to kiss and caress her body. Laying back on top of her was heaven, especially when she wrapped her legs around me and tightened her thighs. This was the moment I had dreamt about, the moment I could make love to her, to show her I was powerful in more ways than one.

There we were, completely naked in the middle of her living room floor, making love on the wood we worked on together as one. And now I was grinding against her, wearing down the wall that she put up from the beginning, and our two bodies were finally like one.

It was a rainy Sunday evening. I brought my cigar to my lips and took a slow puff, knowing that it would likely be a while until I would be able to taste the smoke again. But that wasn’t what was upsetting me: I knew it was Amber I wouldn’t be able to taste while I was locked away.

Amber. My feisty little germaphobe; my California-girl-turned-mob-woman. I smiled at the thought of taking her shooting that first time. She had never held a gun before in her life, and I was proud to be the first one to show her how to use it. Now she was a pro at it, hitting targets perfectly when we went out to my property. She even handled a little business for me every now and then, putting some gentlemen in their place which made me chuckle. She was still a little naive, but it was cute.

But now the fun was over. We got tipped off that one of the players in our illegal gambling ring was an undercover federal agent and I was somehow exposed as the head of the operation. The feds had been watching me the last few weeks, parking on my street as if I were an idiot and didn’t realize they were there. John knew someone crooked on the force and found out that the feds were just waiting for the right time to make their move on me. I knew they were waiting for me to be in a public place so they could cuff me, somewhere where I wouldn’t cause too much trouble. Like the restaurant. John’s friend on the inside confirmed it, actually; that was gonna be the place. I decided to take it like a man and face it head on. Only a coward would run from the cops; the Falco’s were no cowards.

My boys were silent as they watched me puff on my cigar. I took it away from my lips and blew out a slow stream of smoke. “Mikey?”

  “Yes boss?” he answered quickly.

“I want you to continue to take care of Amber for me.”

“I’ll protect her with my life.”

“That’s what I wanted to hear. I want her to move into my house.”

He seemed unsure. “Ya think she’s gonna do that?”

I nodded. “She promised me a long time ago that she’d move in if I ever thought she was in danger. Since I’ll be locked up for a while I think her safety might be a bit of a concern.”

  “Yes boss.”

“And I set aside a large sum of money for her. My grandfather knows all the details about it. I want her to keep at her hobbies, enjoy life while I’m gone.” He nodded and I smiled kindly at him. “You’re a good kid. You’ve done well by my standards. Keep it up and you’ll go places.” His glum face seemed to brighten a bit at my compliment.

“What about the other half of the business?” John asked.

I looked to my old friend and leaned forward, patting him on the back. “Just like we talked before, my grandfather’s takin’ over. I’m retiring.” I stood up and my men stood with me. I looked around at each of their faces. “You’re a good crew. I’ll be seeing you all soon.” I snuffed out my cigar in the ashtray and took my trench coat off of the back of my chair, pulling it on for the final time. “Let’s get this shit over with.”

We all filed out of the room, myself going last. I spotted Amber back by the kitchen and went over to see her as my men went outside to wait for the police.

“Hey baby,” I said while leaning in and giving her a kiss. “How’s your shift going?”

  “Good. How was your meeting?”

I shrugged. “Fine. Business as usual.”

She brought her hand up and smoothed her thumb across my cheek. “Are you okay? The vibe seemed different in there tonight.”

“Yeah, it should be fine,” I said in my most convincing tone; I didn’t want to tell her what I knew was about to happen. “No sense in worrying about anything that hasn’t happened yet.”

“Well I don’t like how that sounds.”

I tried my best to smile, but it was a failed attempt. “Listen, baby, I’ve got some things going on that I might be taking some heat for. I, I just want you to know I might have gotten a little caught up in something and didn’t play my cards right, so to speak.”

Her eyes started to glisten. “What do you mean?”

I sighed and pulled her against me, hugging her tightly for the last time. “I shouldn’t have said anything. Just know that I love you, okay?”

“What, what the hell are you talking about?”

“Shh, it’ll be okay. I promise.”

She pushed away from me. “No, you can’t do this. You can’t pick and choose what I get to know about. Tell me now what’s going on.”

There was a commotion of sirens outside. We both looked over at the restaurant’s windows to see four cop cars pull into the parking lot.

I looked back at her. “I love you.”

“What? Why are you saying that? Tell me what’s happening!”

I smiled and lifted my hand to her face, moving a strand of hair behind her ear. “You are an amazing woman. You hooked me right from the start.” I leaned in and kissed her slowly and deeply, burning the feeling into my mind. When I pulled away I looked her square in her eyes. “Tell me you love me.”

“I, I love you. Of course I love you.”

  “I love you too, Amber.”

As hard as it was to do I let her go and moved away, walking with confidence toward the entrance door. Putting my hand on the handle I pulled it open and then went outside, holding my ha
nds up in the air, surrendering to the four policeman who were waiting for me.

The rain pelted my hair as one of the cops pulled off my trench coat. Another cop patted me down, searching my pockets for weapons. None of this fazed me though, because the only thing that was on my mind was Amber. Would she be okay without me? Wait, who was I kidding? Of course she would; she was a strong woman. But would I be okay without her?

One of the officers pulled my hands harshly down behind me and tightened a pair of handcuffs around my wrists. “We’ve been watching you for a while now,” he said with satisfaction. “You messed up big time.”

“Yeah, I know. The dream couldn’t last forever, huh?”

  “Not for you, Mr. Falco.”

The door to the restaurant flew open and Amber came running out into the rain, taking the cops by surprise as she threw her arms around my neck. “I love you,” she sobbed next to my ear.

I leaned my head against hers, wishing I could break free from the cuffs and hug her for real. “I love you, too.”

One of the cops pulled her off of me. “Get outta here!” he ordered as he pushed her away.

I saw red when he touched my woman like that; no one treated Amber that way. But now my power was gone. I nodded at Mikey to take care of her and in an instant his arms were around her, holding her back. “Remember what I said,” I shouted to him as the cop pulled me away and forced my head down into the back seat of the squad car.

Mikey nodded and held her against him. My heart ached at the sight of her, completely drenched from the downpour, her skin most likely as cold as ice. And it was my fault. I messed up again, keeping things from her. I should have told her I thought the feds were on to me. But I didn’t want her to worry. Her life was already filled with enough worry, living in a slum apartment building, dating an infamous man . . . I only wanted to protect her.

She cried and watched the cop car pull me away. I told her I loved her but I knew she couldn’t hear my voice. I strained my neck to see her for as long as I could until I was too far down the road. I kicked the floor with anger.

“Knock it off!” the cop yelled back at me. “You brought this on yourself, Falco!”

He was right. I calmed myself down and collected my thoughts. “I wanna call my lawyer.”

  * * *

I smiled as I spotted Amber in the courtroom. It was hard to stay away from her, because all I wanted to do was put my arms around her. I reminded myself it would be soon, though, because I knew I wouldn’t be in jail for very long. We were in a crooked city and I had more money than most people had. The judge was easily bought, and after a long discussion with my lawyer I was able to convince the judge to lower my sentence, as long as I behaved well in jail, of course. We had to make it convincing to the public, after all.

I leaned into my lawyer’s ear. “Everything’s still good, right?” He gave me a single nod and I breathed a sigh of relief.

The judge cleared his throat. “Mr. Falco,” he grumbled, “you have been accused of operating an illegal sports bookmaking business that solicited more than fifty million dollars in illegal bets. We make it our priority to hold accountable those involved in assisting in the progress of illegal online gambling by U.S. citizens, regardless of where the business operates, or where the defendants reside. Do you understand that?”

  “Yes, Sir,” I replied.

He looked down at a paper on his desk. “Please rise.” I stood with my lawyer. “And how do you plead?” the judge asked.

“Guilty.” I hated saying that word, but that was a part of the deal I had to make to get out sooner. It didn’t matter anyway, because after this I was going to live a simple life. Who cared if I was guilty of a felony? As long as Amber didn’t care I was alright with it.

The judge nodded. “After careful consideration you are to face up to two years in federal prison for running an illegal gambling business.” He banged his gavel and with that, it was all over.

  “Hey beautiful.”

“Hey,” she smiled. “How are you doing?”

  “Good.”

  “Liar.”

My smile widened; she knew me too well. “I’m doing alright I guess. I miss you; I miss holding you.”

“I know.” She put her finger up against the glass. “I would give my finger to John, just to touch you again.”

“Oh shut it,” I chuckled as I put my finger up to hers. “Don’t worry; it’ll be soon.”

  “You sure?”

“I’m positive. I doubt I’ll be here more than a year. And the time I did while waiting for my trial counts toward that year so I’m tellin’ ya, it’ll be soon.”

She smiled and leaned closer to the glass. “I moved into your house.”

“I’m glad to hear it. I knew you would.”

  “Oh yeah? How so?”

“Because you promised me a long time ago that you would if I needed to protect you, remember?”

  “Yeah, I remember.”

  “Do you miss your house?”

“Yeah,” she admitted. “But I like yours better. I can smell you in yours.”

  “And how do I smell?”

“How do you smell . . .” she repeated the question. “Well, when I lie in your bed I smell your soap and your aftershave. It’s comforting.”

“You still haven’t washed the blankets, huh?” I joked.

“Nope. I don’t think I will until you get home.”

“That’ll be soon, baby. Don’t worry.” I pressed my palm against the glass. “How do you like the present I got you?”

She opened her hand and pressed her palm against mine. “Which one?”

  “Your workshop on my property.”

“I love it,” she smiled. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“I know, but I wanted to. I figured you needed something to throw yourself in to while I’m away in here. You need to get back into doing what you love anyway.”

“It’s been hard to start. I’ve been concentrating so much on you and your situation.”

“I know, love. But just go flip some stuff; do what you enjoy.”

“I will. But I enjoy you.”

“Well you can do me when I get outta here, how does that sound?”

“Yeah,” she laughed. “Believe me, that’ll happen before we even get back to the house.”

“I hope so baby; I really do.” A guard tapped on some glass in another part of the room. I nodded at him and looked back at Amber. “I gotta go. Thank you for coming to see me.”

“You know me, here every week.”

  “That’s my mob woman.”

She smiled and pressed her palm tighter against the glass. “I love you, Trent.”

“I love you, too.” I smiled and hung up the phone, giving her a reassuring wink as I got up and went over to the guard who would take me back to my lonely cell.

  * * *

It was a sunny day, the perfect kind for such a happy moment. When I saw her waiting for me outside my heart almost exploded out of my chest. It was so exciting, knowing that in a few short feet I would be met with the woman I was so in love with. I would be able to touch her, to smell her, to protect her. It was a great day.

My grin was wide as I opened my arms and took Amber up into them, lifting her off from the ground. “Ah, I missed you, baby.” I lowered her feet back to the pavement and looked down at her face, moving in, not waiting any longer to kiss her.

She held onto me tightly as our lips parted. “It was so hard to be without you,” she said as a tear left the corner of her eye.

“I know, baby.” I wiped it away and smiled. “I did a lot of work while I was on the inside, got a lot of things squared away with my business.”

  “What do you mean?”

“Well, no more illegal gambling, obviously. They’ll be watching me closely from here on out because of it, so I pretty much have to give up everything I’ve been doing. I’m just glad it was this they busted me for and not the other st
uff.”

She nodded. “So what are you going to do now?”

“Anything I want. I have enough money put away to take care of us comfortably for the rest of our lives, so there’s not really a need to continue with the family business. My grandfather’s taking over the heavy stuff for me and I’m done with the club. That scene’s gettin’ old anyway.”

“So no more being a businessman, huh?” she teased.

I shook my head and chuckled warmly. “Not with the illegal stuff, no. But I hear there’s a very talented woman who wants to open up a little furniture business of her own. I think I might try and help her out with that.”

Her smile soothed me. “If that’s what you wish, Trent,” she said as she hugged me tightly. “If that’s what you wish.”

My woman was finally in my arms again, and I couldn’t be happier. From the beginning of our relationship Amber captured me with her fiery attitude and elegant beauty, knocking me off of my feet in an instant. Her presence filled me with an animalistic desire that I didn’t even know existed in me, a desire to have her as my own. At first it was I who was the powerful one, watching her with need, keeping my eyes fixed on her like a target as I instinctually tracked her intoxicating scent. But once she dismissed her fear of me her attitude intrigued me even more so. I fell in love with the beauty of her soul and saw the kindness she showed to others. She was a different kind of woman. And that was when the tables had turned.

She became the powerful one. I was no longer ruler of my domain, she was. She watched me with desire, her eyes locking onto me like a target, tracking my scent, hunting me. She actually wanted me for the man that I was. And for once in my life I was afraid. I was afraid I might lose her, lose this wonderful woman who I didn’t even deserve. And knowing so I strived to give her the world. She could ask me anything at all and I would do it in a heartbeat, no questions asked. I bowed down to her like she was a queen because it was an obvious truth that I literally needed her to breathe. I never would have thought someone like her could dig her claws into me and that I would succumb to her attack. But I did. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
