Last Alpha: A Highland shifter romance

  Jim had come out here and he’d shot himself a wolf, just as one of his ancestors had, in theory, shot Scotland’s last wild wolf nearly three and a half centuries before. But now that wolf lay in the dirt here, a man. And not only a man, but the one who owned most of the countryside around here for as far as the eye could see.

  Just how do you explain something like that?

  He went across to Carr’s unmoving body and cursed him, profane language another vice to which he rarely succumbed.

  Then he looked down and saw... something different.

  The body hair – had it been so thick across the fallen man’s back? Had the legs been drawn up like that? The face so... long?

  And as he watched, Carr changed.

  McQueen backed away, holding his rifle before him, poised to raise to his shoulder in an instant.

  He was sure Carr had been dead! So sure, he hadn’t checked for a pulse... He was getting sloppy in his old age. Stupid.

  Now, the wolf held itself low, its head sweeping from side to side.

  Then... head held steady, it fixed him with its glare. Lips curled up, sharp teeth exposed. A snarl spilled out, a ribbon of saliva hanging down.

  And then the wolf turned, leapt, and was gone, off to fight another day.
