My knees gave out, and I collapsed to the ground. All at once, I felt years of anguish and pain rush in on me, surrounding me. I couldn’t hold the tears back from my eyes. It was rubbish what that bloody wanker had just said, I knew it was. It made absolutely no sense. There was a note. I saw the pills. I found her body. I…
But there was a voice in my head that told me what I had just heard was true. And somehow, amidst the chaotic roar of charged emotion that surged through me, a stillness and peace swept through me. I remembered a conversation I’d had twenty years ago, and certain parts of it started to make a little more sense.
“Why?” I managed to say. There were a thousand thoughts coursing through me at that moment, but only one seemed important enough to voice. “Why would anyone want her dead?”
But the answer didn’t come because when I looked up, I was alone.
