Winning the Game

“It’s a risk,” Penny says. “One you don’t want to take if you’re trying to have a baby.”
“We’re not trying yet,” I clarify. “We’re discussing it.” At my recent doctor’s appointment, the doctor confirmed I should have no problem falling pregnant, despite only having one ovary. When I told Rhett the news, he wanted to practice immediately. To my surprise, he suggested I stop taking the pill.
Rhett snorts. “We’re doing more than discussing it. Been practising a while now.” He winks at me.
“Rhett,” Penny reprimands.
“Your mother doesn’t want to hear your dirty thoughts,” I admonish. “I only wanted to alert you to the email, not get into a discussion of sex.”
“I’d rather talk about sex.”
My cheeks warm, despite his words exciting other parts of me.
Penny pushes up from the chair. “Now your mind is on another track I’ll leave you two alone. I have a lot to do before Tori’s parents arrive in the morning.”
I slap Rhett’s shoulder. “Did you really need to do that?”
He arches a brow and pulls me into his lap. “Do what?”
“Embarrass me in front of your mother.”
He leans his forehead into mine. “She knows we fuck, Tori.”
“Do you have to say it like that? You can’t speak that way when my parents arrive tomorrow.”
“You’re nervous,” he states, not really asking.
“A bit.”
His hand rests low on my back and moves in a circular motion. “Relax. They’ll be fine. It’s not like our parents don’t know each other.”
“I’m nervous about talking to my mother about having a baby, not about them coming here for the first time.”
“Then let me do it. I’ll tell her our plans and the dates we’re thinking about for a wedding.”
I smile and lean into his hand on my back. “She’ll be asking about an engagement ring, you know.”
Rhett shrugs. “We make our own rules. We’ll do things the way we like and I don’t care if other people don’t agree with it.”
I run my fingers through his hair, allowing his words to sink in and warm my heart. Rhett closes his eyes and relaxes under my touch. “We always have,” I whisper.
“You’re with me Tori, with me, and that’s all that matters.”
First and foremost to my husband, Lynden. Without your encouragement, love and support, my books would still be sitting on the computer. You are my rock.
To my four beautiful daughters, Jamie-Lee, Shauni, Ashleigh, and Demi, who helped with character names, plot, and provided constant inspiration. Also to Cameron, Charlie and Cruise, who answered my questions on sport.
To my wonderful parents, Pam and Vic, and my sister Vickie and her family, Sasha, Akira, and Keenan, for believing in me and helping in any way possible.
A big shout-out to my friends, and biggest fans: my Mum, Deanne and Helen, Dayna, Alison, Tracey, Bromwyn, Krista, and Marilyn for reading my books in their raw stages, and believing in me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, as your words of praise mean so much to me.
To Kim Sutton at Blogging for the Love of Authors, I am so lucky to have found you! I couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you for your encouragement, words of wisdom and late night chats despite the time difference between our countries. Thank you for loving my book!
So much love and appreciation to my street team, and all the blogging community for helping to get my book out to the world. You all make the book world a much better place.
