All Is Swell

  “I’ve got forever.”

  The entire town Ahhhed.

The low clouds dispersed with a burst, bits and pieces of them shooting off throughout the universe. The wind started to whisper, blowing beautiful thoughts around in a billion languages. Trees and bushes shook their limbs in jubilation, the rich ground singing the bass. Hats were thrown into the air and hugs were passed around like baby photos at a family reunion.

I looked at Grace and stuck out my hand as if to reach for her. She dropped her branches, breathing softly. I pulled her to me and held on for dear life. I could feel her shake.

  “Are you okay?” I whispered.

I felt her hair in my face and her back beneath my hands. Gratitude streamed down my face.

From the corner of my eye I watched the crowd wipe their eyes. Toby’s bandage would go home wet today.

  Grace loved me.

  All was well.
