  Introduction

Kyle stood in front of his mirror taking inventory of his many scars from knives, bullets, and even flame. He had been captured in Bosnia and tortured, but when he got free, he slaughtered every one of his captors. He had paid the price for exacting such revenge but in the aggregate, he felt it worth while and necessary.

He had never married and the only intimate relationships he had ever experienced were those with other freedom fighters wherein the goal was to achieve orgasm rather than develop a relationship.

Relationships were a waste of time and energy that cold be used on mission-sensitive work. It made many of his social skills to be marginally bearable and his attitude about those who were in his closest sphere of influence caused them great fear.

There had never before a woman who could ease the tensions of his long history of failed attempts at relationships and it would be someone whom he would never had suspected.

Kyle Christopher had wrought havoc upon the shifter ranks and his ability to find their dens was unmatched. Unmatched until he met her, of course. When she entered his life, everything changed and it would force him to evaluate his very belief system.

  Chapter 1 – Insights From a Dream

It was dark and bitterly cold and Kyle was without a coat. The wind tussled his hair and when he breathed, the cold stung his lungs and made his breathing feel labored. The steel on his AR15 was cold to the touch and a part of him wanted to throw out a few rounds just for the heat. His gloves were almost useless and his fingers numb.

They were right on his tail; he could nearly feel their breath nipping at his heels. He knew that he couldn’t outrun them, but he was hoping that he could outsmart them.

Ahead, he saw a huge fallen tree that was lying across a ravine. At the bottom of the ravine, the sound of a raging river filled his ears. If he could make it across the river on that log, it was highly unlikely that they would follow him. It would either save him or kill him.

The log was slippery and moss-covered so he had to sling his rifle over his shoulder and basically trot across on all fours. Though it was still a treacherous traverse, he made it and left the shifters on the other side of the ravine; but then, they stated to follow. Exhausted, he realized that the time had come to fight rather than run.

He took aim at the first shifter and it was a direct hit, center-mass but the shifter was unaffected by the bullet. It was then that Kyle remembered that he was shooting lead hollow points, not silver coated ammunition.

It was at that very moment when he realized that he had seen his last days and he began to quickly go through his life experience and then the shifter jumped on him and began gnawing at his shoulder.

The eyes were familiar and strangely soothing amid the exceptional amount of pain he was feeling.

Blood was flying in a fine mist; muscle and bone tissue were crushed and floating through the air.

He sat straight up in bed, covered in sweat and trembling. It wasn’t the first nightmare he had experienced and it wouldn’t be the last. His hatred for the shifters had permeated the very fabric of his being and had spilled over into even his subconscious.

He would be the last to admit that there was inner angst and a suspicion that his demise would eventually be at the hands of shifters. He had seen it happen so many times in his dreams that he had begun to accept it as a reality.

He got up out of his small bunk in the “Captain’s quarters” at the new and improved headquarters and opened his bathroom door. The room was very much similar to a Commanding Officers’ berthing compartment on a ship.

The paint was a dull gray, the overhead light was a vintage ceiling fan, the desk was an old military-issue metal desk, and the floors were made of worn, discolored linoleum.

  It fe
lt like home for Kyle.

Over his desk were a single photograph of he and a crew of 8 others standing next to a sign in what looked to be Kenya. There was a street sign behind them that read, “Mombasa” with an arrow pointing in the easterly direction. He and his crew made it out alive but just barely.

He stood naked before the mirror in his industrial-looking bathroom. His muscular and defined body was riddled with scars of various sizes and shapes. There were what looked to be bullet wounds, knife wounds, burns, and healed stitches. Across his chest was a tattoo that read, “Speed, Surprise, Violence of Action.” It was a Special Forces slogan that he had carried with him his whole life.

Most women found Kyle to be strikingly attractive, however, the intense look in his eyes coupled with the scars on his face and neck were intimidating. They couldn’t tell if he were a former convict or military specialist. The vast majority of the time, the fear was enough to keep them at an arm’s length.

His training had taught him to fight back the very human emotion of loneliness because he had no time or energy to be wasted on such feelings. He often thought that it would be nice to have a companion, but if he would even consider such, there were very specific traits she would have to have that did not exist in women he had known.

She would have to be a warrior; a strong woman who did not flinch at the sight of blood. She would have to be in good physical condition to be able to keep up with him in and out of bed. She would have to be his intellectual equal, but most importantly, she would have to share his hatred for shifters. He knew that he had set impossible standards and perhaps he had done so by design.

He showered, shaved, dressed in his paramilitary gear and made his way to the Great Room where his small army would be, awaiting his word. They were preparing for a major move, but only Kyle knew what that would be.

He walked into the room and what was no less than 200 people stood up at attention; his second in command ensuring that everything was in order for Kyle’s presentation.

  Chapter 2 – Happy Family

Thomas, Neema, Laura, Joshua Knight, and Constance Versailles were all gathered in a large room talking, laughing and enjoying a morning cup of coffee together while Laura and Thomas’ son Cheveyo sat quietly. Joshua Knight was Laura and Cheveyo’s new bodyguard who stuck closely to mother and son. Constance Versailles was flown to the ‘States from Paris to tutor and train young Cheveyo as he developed.

Neema and Laura sat next to each other and had forged a unique and close bond over the course of the previous months and at the center of it all was the child. Because of the child, many of the petty arguments and jealousies fell by the wayside in the hopes of securing their future and the consistent oversight of The Committee.

Thomas sat at the back of the room away from most of the activity just watching everything that was taking place. He had ceased any kind of physical relationship with Neema as was the custom. His somewhat monogamous life had begun when his son was born, but he still had urges and found Neema to be exceptionally attractive; particularly since she had calmed and mellowed her attitude after her brush with death.

Laura had lost most of the weight she had gained during her pregnancy; however, she still maintained her curvaceous and sultry appearance. She carried motherhood well and was in constant observation of admiring men and jealous women. There was an aura about her that commanded attention and a humility that made her all the more beautiful.

Thomas had changed a bit as well; his impulsive nature was kept at bay and the decisions made on behalf of The Committee were more deliberate. He was just as fierce and terrifying a figure but more so at that point because of his ability to be more calculated and patient. Surprisingly, he smiled more as well.

Cheveyo Blaine was a remarkable child. His motor skills were exceptional and his ability to communicate even at a year old was extraordinary. The Committee was impressed with his growth and his nanny would smile and wink when his abilities were mentioned in conversation. Cheveyo had shown signs of sensitivity and of patience as well. While they all gathered and speaking together, Cheveyo would wait and listen patiently as though he were involved in the conversation himself.

Everyone in the shifter community loved the boy and their love would provide an exceptional layer of protection for him.

Laura had acquired a new bodyguard as well. Joshua Knight was not massive in height or size like Thomas, but he had a reputation for being quick and deadly. His powers of observation were second to none.

He watched over Laura and the baby as if they were his own and there were times that he truly wished they were his. Laura had inadvertently captured his heart and the boy had enlivened his spirit. Laura had been the sole focus of his dreams; dreams that were boring and erotic just the same. His desire for had increased, but he had been able to cover his scent or to hide it well.

That ability was one of the many reasons he made such a good bodyguard.

They had all fallen into a nice routine that was almost normal. It was as though they were one, big happy family, but there was trouble on the horizon.

The television above the fireplace caught everyone’s attention and the room fell silent.

The news was reporting of the death of three wolves along the Columbia River that were dismembered in what the news described as in “a ritualistic manner.”

Everyone in the room knew what that meant; it was the enemy taking out shifters.

Chapter 3 – Hearing the Wind

Neema and Thomas made their way to headquarters for an emergency meeting, leaving Joshua, Laura, Cheveyo, and Constance at the house. It was time to put the boy down for his post-lunch nap and get ready for the remainder of the day, Laura thought to herself.

She would shower, dress, and have Joshua escort her to the nearby mall for a much-needed and much-deserved shopping break and walk.

Joshua was quiet but almost always very willing to do whatever driving Laura needed at that moment and over the course of the previous few weeks, he had gone so far as to exhibit a slight inclination towards excitement; but hit was short-lived as he didn’t want to blow his cover.

While Laura showered, Joshua was dutifully stationed outside of her bedroom door in the event someone with nefarious intentions came after her. He was dressed unusually casual that day. He was wearing his button-down denim jeans, dark red running shoes that matched his Portland Trailblazers t-shirt and jacket.

He was surprisingly handsome in casual wear and it would be the first time that Laura actually saw him dressed in anything but a black suit and white shirt.

When she bumped into him as she came out of her room, she was startled and had to do a double-take to ensure that it truly was him. Laura embarrassed herself as she allowed her stare to linger a little longer than she expected she would.

Leading the way down the stairs to the main floor, Laura had a bit of a skip in her step. She was in remarkably good spirits in spite of the news earlier in the day. The sun was shining and her casual clothing made her non-descript and able to fit in with the rest of the so-called soccer moms at the mall.

With Joshua dressing casually as well, they could easily pull of the look of a couple just out shopping for the afternoon.

In the front of the house was a circular driveway that led to a massive iron gate with an electronic security system. Barely visible was an armed guard just to the side of the top of the gate; hidden in the camouflage stand in the trees.

Joshua held the passenger door open for Laura as was customary when being seen in public. They were required to play the role of a happy couple. It was a role that Joshua enjoyed a great deal.

They left in one of the less conspicuous SUVs and drove toward the mall. There was no conversation during the ride as Laura was engrossed in a story being broadcast on their local NPR station. When they arrived, they parked the car and made their way to what would turn out to be a very interesting afternoon.

On the other side of the city, The Committee had gathere
d to discuss the rash of murders that had been occurring in the area since the raid on the enemy camp. They had initially thought that the vast majority of the group had been eliminated and that there were too few left in the northwest region to revamp and start over.

It was a horrible miscalculation on their part.

The Committee consisted of Neema and Thomas, Deidre Mack (from Ireland), Jefferson Norton (England), Kamira Patel (India), Winthrop Beards (Canada), and Martha McClintock (Scotland).

The women outnumbered the men which, in some circles, would be a problem. The Committee, however, represented centuries of experience and wisdom and the women on The Committee had proven themselves in thought and in deed countless times through the history of The Committee.

“We need to determine if these deaths and mutilations are the work of the enemy or just a fluke,” said Martha in a deep Scottish accent.

“I think it is a foregone conclusion that all of these incidents since we attacked them are from the enemy,” replied Jefferson, “I think the question remains as to whether or not we respond now or later.”

There was murmuring and then Kamira spoke up with her thick Indian accent.
