The Rescue

  “Does it involve our bank?”

“No, but I wonder if it might eventually.”

Anne held him for a moment and then spoke.

“I have one more Christmas gift for you.”

“Do you?” Weston sounded as distracted as he was, but Anne kept on.

“A little news of my own.”

  “Um-hmm.”

“We’re going to have a baby.”

She knew the moment she had his attention. It took a few heartbeats, but he stopped, his head coming up as though he could see her in front of him.

  “What did you say?”

Anne stepped back and waited for him to turn and face her.

“I said we’re going to have a baby.”

Weston was the most flustered she’d ever seen him.

“Are you all right?” he finally managed. “Do you feel all right?”

“I feel fine. Are you pleased?” she asked, feeling unsure over his reaction.

Weston took her in his arms.

“I just had a moment of fear was all. I’m delighted, but I can’t stand the thought of anything happening to you, and for a few seconds my thoughts ran wild.”

Anne put her hands on his cheeks.

“We won’t worry about that. It’s not our job. We’ll just trust that God has a baby for us, and we’ll both be here to raise him.”

Weston nodded, still a little in shock.

“It could be a girl,” he suddenly said.

“It could be,” Anne agreed with a smile.

“Or one of each!” he now suggested, warming to the subject.

  Anne began to laugh.

The full truth of it hit him a moment later, and he lifted his wife and spun her around.

“A baby! We’re going to have a baby!”

Anne laughed, even as he tried to kiss her.

“My mother!” Weston stopped and said. “I’ve got to tell her.”

  “She’s probably in bed, Weston.”

“That doesn’t matter,” he declared, his eyes wide with the wonder of it all. “She’s going to become a grandmother. There’s no time for sleep!”

Anne’s sides hurt from laughing as she watched him dash to the door and fling it open. He was calling to his mother long before he reached her room.

A huge smile on her face, Anne stayed where she was, her arms wrapped around her middle, thinking about the little person inside of her and the special father he would have.

“Or she,” Anne said out loud to the empty room, her heart full of peace and confidence that whomever God put in their future, boy, girl, or one of each, it would be perfect.

After all, God had sent Robert Weston to rescue her. He could do anything!
