She sat back down looked at the food.
“You know, Brad’s not here yet. You can eat if you want to eat.”
She smiled and grabbed a deviled egg, eating it with bliss and speed before her older brother came.
“Where’s Penny?” Olivia asked.
“She’s getting cleaned up since they just fucked,” Kendall said as he walked passed me.
I playfully slapped him across his head for his unnecessary comment. I forget that Kendall doesn't have a filter sometimes.
Olivia giggled, “So how is the baby making process going?”
Disappointed filled my lungs as I sighed heavily, “Not great. We have been trying since she graduated last year, but nothing. Right now, we’re just trying to take a break and cool down on the crazy calendar ovulation bullshit.”
“Yeah, Penny told me. I mean it takes some couples more than a year.”
I nodded politely, but I was still frustrated with the whole situation. I’ve been lucky ever since I met Penny, but not with this. When I had to work in Florida, Penny had a semester on campus, and when I had to travel to Hawaii or Texas, Penny was lucky enough to be able to take all of her semester classes online so she could come with me.
I guess my luck is finally running out. I mean, I am going to get the best promotion of my life next week. Still, I wish I had more luck.
The doorbell rung, but before I could even walk to the door, Brad barged in with his wife.
“Hey, Brad. Viola,” I greeted them in and sat them down at the table.
“Where is Pen?” Brad looked around the house.
I darted my eyes over at Kendall who already had a smirk on his face ready to address that question. Kendall caught my glare and kept his mouth shut.
“Penelope is getting ready,” Kendall said in a very civilized tone.
I sighed with relief that Kendall understood my look. I walked over to the kitchen and grabbed some wine for the ladies and beer for the men. When I looked up, I saw Penny coming down the stairs in a simple flared dress. She was perfect.
She greeted everyone at the table then walked over to me. “Do you need any help?” she asked me with an extremely happy grin.
I sat next to my wife and smiled to myself as I thought about her beauty. She is literally the best of both worlds. She knows how to be my dirty little slut when I need her to be then my flawless princess. I gripped her thigh and we all started to dig into the food.
“So, can I finally ask why we are here?” Brad arched his eyebrows.
I cleared my throat and looked over at Viola who was nodding her head with excitement. I cleared my throat again. “As you know I have been working at the company for 14 years. And Mr. Tate has been working at the company since the dawn of time.”
Everyone nodded politely trying to figure out what I was about to say.
“Anyway, about a year ago Mr. Tate gave me the biggest news of my life. He told me that in exactly a year, next week actually, he will be retiring.”
“Whoa. Fuck yeah! I’ll cheer for that!” Kendall brought up his beer. “Sorry, Vi, no offense to your dad and all.”
“None taken,” she grinned.
“Anyway, since he will be retiring I will be the new owner of WT Design.”
Brad and Kendall jaws dropped as the ladies cheered for me.
“Are you serious?” Brad and Kendall both exploded.
“Why didn't you tell me your dad going to put him in charge, Vi?” Brad complained to his wife.
“Yeah, shouldn't you be the rightful heir and what not, Vi?” Kendall complained too.
Viola shook her head, “Hell, no. I don’t know the first thing about running the place. I’m just a 1st grade teacher.”
“Come on, it’s not that bad,” I chuckled.
Brad rolled his eyes, “You already make the accounting department piss their pants every time you walk in and go all ‘boss mode’ on them.”
“Same in the interior design department,” Penny smirked, knowing that she was the exception to my tough ruling.
“Good, like a real boss should,” I pointed out.
“In my defense, you don’t make me piss in my pants,” Kendall mumbled as he sipped on his bottle.
“Come on, this is a good thing. You guys always talk about how Walter is never around because he’s always on vacations,” Olivia backed me up.
“But if he isn't around then we don't really have to work too hard,” Kendall whined. I darted a nasty glare as he confessed the truth. “I probably shouldn't have said that,” Kendall went back to his beer.
“You realize you have to cut your hair if you are the ‘new face’ of WT Design,” Brad smirked looking at my long locks.
“That’s not going to happen,” Penny spoke for me, taking a sip of her water instead of her favorite red wine.
“Exactly,” I nodded with my wife.
“You know we can always place that dare again?” Brad raised his eyebrows up and down trying to pressure me.
“Okay, seriously it has been years. What is that stupid dare you keep talking about,” Viola snapped.
“Seriously, just tell us already,” Olivia crossed her arms at her brother.
Penny followed up the girls with a nod as she agreed with him.
“Fine. Fine. I’ll tell you —”
“Just remember we were stupid college kids. I was 18 and it’s probably not as cool as you think,” I pointed out so that they wouldn't be disappointed.
“Alright. Shh. It was my junior year of college and I had just turned 21 over the summer. I was drinking a beer in my room when this Goldilocks looking freshman comes in and takes a seat on the bed. We found out that there was an error in the rooming system and that’s how he ended up rooming with a junior. I gave him two options. I told him if he can complete a dare then he could stay in the room and get as much booze as he wanted, but if he failed or backed out then he had to cut his hair and find a new roommate. But of course, he agreed to the dare.” Brad looked around the room, building up anticipation in the story.
“And . . . what was the dare?” Penny looked at me with narrow eyes.
“He agreed to drink three full beers then go streaking around the campus with his boxers on his head until he got to the Frat house where he would egg the place then do a backflip on their lawn. After his victory backflip, he would then have to leave his boxers on the lawn for a little reminder.”
“What?” Penny giggled at this stupid dare, probably imagining me doing all this so I can have all the booze I wanted. I let out an embarrassed sigh as my face burned up.
“I was 18! And it was free booze!” I tried to defend my stupidity.
“Where part did you back out of?” Penny giggled through the question.
“I got to the backflip, but I landed weird and twisted my ankle so I backed out,” I ran my hand through my hair.
“You’re an idiot,” Olivia scolded her older brother. “If he got caught he would have gotten expelled.
“But he didn’t. He was fine. I mean after I saw that he was loyal and stuck to his word I let him and his Mohawk stay,” Brad laughed with Kendall who also found this stupid dare hilarious.
Viola looked at Penny with a wink, “I hate to say it, but the hardest part about being married to you guys is admitting that we’ve married complete idiots.”
Penny and I said goodbye to everyone as they left. I looked over at the table and began to clean up our mess. I lifted Penny’s wine that didn’t even have a drop missing from it.
“Hey, Penny?’ I yelled so she can hear me from the kitchen where she was putting away leftovers.
“Yeah?”
“I got you your favorite wine? Château Clerc Milon Pauillac?” I was second guessing myself thinking maybe I got the wrong one. But I am 100% that this is her favorite. I know my wife. I walked over to the kitchen and placed the glass on the kitchen island.
“Yeah, of course. Why do you ask?”
“Hmmm, because you didn’t even ha
ve a sip of it?” I raised the glass, swirling the liquid gently.
Penny tucked her hair behind her ear as she turned red. She looked up at me with a tearful grin, “I’m pregnant.”
My heart froze as my mind went numb from shock. It was getting harder to breathe. I fell back in the chair as I grabbed my chest and looked at Penny with joyful eyes, trying to figure out if she said what I think she said.
“Is this real?” I muttered under my breath, trying to find out how to breathe again.
She nodded happily as a tear rolled down her cheek.
“Oh my god!” I stood up and grabbed Penny tightly as I jumped. I placed her back on the ground as my mind raced with a hundred and one questions. “When did you find out? Do you know for sure? Did you take a test? Or is your period just late?”
“Cedric, take a deep breath,” she looked into my eyes, forcing me to calm down from this news. “I just found out today, right before the party. I noticed I haven't had my period in a while and when I looked at my calendar I was already three weeks late. So I decided to use one of the extra tests we had and it came back positive.”
“It’s happening. It’s finally happening. You’re going to be a mom . . . I’m going to be a dad. I’m going to be a dad,” I gave Penny a passionate kiss to let her know that she means the world to me and that she made me the happiest man alive.
“Holy shit. I’m going to be a mom,” Penny sniffed.
“Since we have a cat named Nickels, does this mean we can name our kid Dime? And then our other kid Quarter? We can be a 41 cent family.”
“Oh, my god. No, stop. The lame dad jokes are already starting,” Penny whined while she tried to push away from me. I held her tightly so she couldn’t escape.
“Just accept it. I’m going to be a dad.”
Penny giggled into my chest. I held my world tightly around me as I embraced this moment. This lucky moment. I let out a heavy sighed. I guess, my luck isn’t running out after all. I kissed Penny passionately knowing she was going to give me everything I ever needed in my life, and then some.
“I love you, Penny. My Lucky Penny.”

The chairs screech as everyone drags them across the floor. This is the third meeting in a row this week. Everyone is quick to grab their folders. The meeting lasted longer than any of us anticipated so everyone is eager to get out and catch the last quarter of the football game. Nobody wants to miss the game. Well, nobody but me.
“Are you sure that you don’t want to come?” Melissa asks as she walks toward her office. The rest of the tutors are out of the door before she can talk to any of them. By now, everyone knows not to stick around at the tutoring center. Not while Melissa is still here.
I’m the last victim, not that I mind. I get along quite well with Melissa, even though everyone else thinks she can be kind of a hard ass sometimes.
I grab my jacket and throw my backpack over my shoulder, the straps digging into my shoulders. I’ve got a full load for tonight. I’ll have to pull an all nighter to get done with everything. Nothing out of the usual for me. “I don’t think so. I’ve got a lot of work to do. Plus, football’s not my kind of sport.”
The homecoming game is tonight. It’s against our cross-city rivals, The Vultures. The whole campus has been buzzing about the game all week and everyone’s donning the blue and gold.
“Well, if you change your mind, the offer still stands. You have my number and can text me.” She throws her coat on and grabs a folder off the table, holding the folder out for me with a smile. I reach for it and nearly drop it when she lets it fall into my hand.
“What is this?” I ask and open it. I flip through the pages and hold my breath. I’d never seen or held a tutoring folder this thick before. It’s twice as thick as the encyclopedia that I have in my dorm room. All I know is that this doesn’t bode well for me.
The inside of the folder is filled with half answered homework assignments and poorly written essays. Whoever these belong to didn’t even bother filling in their name at the top of the page. In all the time that I’d worked here, I’ve never seen such a lack of effort.
The top of each page is marked with a thick letter F. There’s an occasional D or C- in the pile, but nothing that would change the average. Whoever’s folder this is, he or she is failing almost every class that they have.
“I know that you’re loaded right now, but I need you to do me a favor.” She hikes up the collar of her coat and walks out of her office. I try to stick right behind her as I skim through the comments on the progress report. There isn’t even a glimmer of hope for this student. It would take a miracle to turn these grades around.
“Whose folder is this?” We step out into the lobby of the tutoring center and take the glass steps down to the front of the library. Grant, the library security guard, manages to give us a weary nod before his eyes turn back to the small TV at his table. The football game is on full blast, the cheers of the crowd bouncing off the rows of books. Normally being this loud in the library wouldn’t be allowed but as I look around I note that we’re the only three people here. Every living soul on this campus is at the game or at a nearby bar to watch it.
Melissa leans over the counter and watches the next play unfold. I try to pretend like I’m interested, but half the time, my eyes go back down to the folder. When I look back up, the teams are walking off the field and I catch a glimpse of the score.
It’s a close game. It’s half time and we
re only up three points. And that’s when he pops onto the screen.
David Cooper.
Even someone like me knows who he is. Every girl on campus loses her mind every time he walks past. There’s always a plethora of girls following him.
He’s the star quarterback. The captain of our team. A smile that makes every girl wet for miles. At least that’s what I’ve heard. He’s everything that any girl could want.
Tall. Handsome. Muscular.
Normally, that wouldn’t matter to me. But he also has the greenest eyes that I’ve ever seen in my life. Every time I see them, it reminds me of grass poking through the winter snow. I can’t help but get lost in them.
A reporter gets his attention just before he walks down the tunnel to the locker room. He pulls off his helmet and his thick blond hair bounces out and gives way to his green eyes. I almost drop the folder I’m holding and the air in my lungs stops.
There are dirt marks on his face and grass stains on his uniform. The dark marks on his face bring out a rugged look that only amplifies his charm. I’m sure that every girl right now is swooning over him.
“What does your team need to do to come back into this?” The reporter holds the microphone close to his mouth and he throws her his signature smile. The skin around his cheeks tighten and a small dimple gives way at his upper right lip. Without wanting to, I find myself biting down on my lip.
“We need to work together and contain them on their side of the field. All I need is just one perfect pass and this game will be ours.” He nods to himself and his hand tightens around his helmet. He bites down on his glove and peels it off his hand, grabbing for the microphone. I wish that his teeth were grabbing onto my panties. I can feel the redness rise to my face and look down at the folder, glancing at the TV. “Go Hawks,” he yells and the crowd erupts into a cheer. He winks at the camera and runs down the tunnel.
