Finally her mind went to Gabe.

Her short time with the archangel had changed her so much. Her hope had been restored and faith strengthened. Just as the pangs of sadness crept in her heart, she heard celestial chimes.

Nia looked across the street and just for a moment she wanted to rub her eyes. It can’t be she told herself. Out of nowhere appeared The Ark. Nia smiled, realizing that the archangel had come back to her.

“Gabe!” she shouted out the window.

At once Gabe got out of The Ark. Leaned against the passenger side, shoulders relaxed with a huge smile plastered on his face. “Come down Ms. Carter,” he called with his hands cuffed.

Without hesitation, she slipped on some shoes and raced to the door. Pops was there with a beer looking out the window as well. A silent look between daughter and father. “Gone ahead.”

Nia kissed Pop and threw open the door. She trotted down the stairs and went to The Ark.

Before Gabe could even lift off the side of the car, she charged him with a hug. “What are you doing here?”

Gabe wrapped his arms around her and delighted in the warm fragrant smell of her hair. “How about one last ride?”

Nia was silent. Stunned by the opportunity in front of her. Her last adventure with the archangel was terrifying and dangerous. But she never felt so alive. She looked behind her at the Brooklyn projects she had been raised and spent most of her life in. Then she heard the words of her father in her head, telling her to get out of the projects. She knew she was ready to let go and embrace a new destiny in front of her.

She turned to him brightly, “Forget it! Let’s go.”

With the energy of two teenagers sneaking away, they snatched open the doors of The Ark and hopped into the cool leather seats.

“Where now then…..and when?” Gabe asked flexing his fingers ready to set a new course.

Nia sighed and leaned against the dash of The Ark. “I don’t know, Gabe. Somewhere fun but peaceful. It’s all on you.”

Gabe grinned with delight. “I know just the place.” He paused dramatically and cast his gaze over. “Let’s head to the future.” He reached into his coat pocket and retrieved the black rune. “And we can take as much time as we want. No one will find us.”

Nia took a deep breath, and grabbed his right hand. Together they drove off to their next adventure to another place and time.
