That didn’t mean anyone was sleeping any better. Detective Carpenter claimed he was still investigating the case, even if the district attorney was about to bring the case against McGee to court. Rescue Company pack remained on high alert, and tension with the other packs and with the human community was still running high. The billionaire Roger Ainsworth had claimed innocence against Grieg and the Sturmwulfen’s accusation that the arsonist was at his mansion in the hills. The police chief flatly refused to investigate the claim.
But not all was trouble and turmoil. Nicole was renting a small place at the edge of town until her home owner’s insurance paid her for the loss of her house. She faithfully drove out every day to care for her goats so she could keep a watch on them, though Gabriela and Luke helped out from time to time. They all visited each another often, and Nicole simply adored the new puppy. She was happy and in full swing teaching her kindergarten class and looking forward to Gabriela joining the pack.
“You’re too quiet,” Luke said, resting his cheek on her head as he held her. “What are you thinking about?”
“Oh, nothing. Nicole and her goats.”
He laughed. “The weird things that run through your brain sometimes… ‘I’m being held by my adoring and massively sexy mate, but let me think about his sister’s goat herd.’”
She gave him a playful smack on the arm. “It’s not like that at all—”
Luke’s cell phone rang. He groaned and cursed. “I need to get that. Could be work.” He answered, paused, and moved away from her and started to dress, all while still listening to whoever was talking on the phone. “Understood. I’m on my way.” He disconnected and looked at her. “That was the chief. There’s a huge fire at a warehouse downtown. Both Station Six and One are responding, but they’re calling everyone in.”
“Oh, God. Do they know what started it?”
“First thing is getting that fire out. But it looks like we’ll have to postpone your initiation ceremony.”
“Thank God. I mean—oh, no!” She shook her head. “Don’t worry about me. I mean it. I want you concentrating on your job. Now go.” She kissed him and then looked deep into his eyes. “Be safe and come back to me.”
He kissed her back, and his gaze was fierce with love. “I will always come back to you.”
“Then go be the hero I love.”
“I love you, Gabriela,” he said quietly.
She had to blink back tears. “I love you more than anything.”
He stole one last kiss from her before grabbing his coat and rushing out the door. She watched his truck race away from the window back toward town. She was a bit disappointed the ceremony might be delayed, but even if it was, she knew that her life here was better, and any challenges that would need to be faced, she would face them with Luke at her side.
Because that was what love meant. Together forever, no matter what.
