Lucien says the essay will help me heal and forget my past. Rusty, of course, said that was bullshit. I don’t think those two will ever get along. Maybe it’s because they’re too much alike.

Lucien’s wrong about me forgetting about my past. I’ll never forget it. I went through hell. If it wasn’t for Rusty and the Ellis brothers, I would have never survived, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

When I turned fourteen, everything changed for me. I found out that there really was a supernatural world and things really did go bump in the night…This is my story.

  Chapter One

I grabbed the wobbly banister and climbed the stairs two at time, my pounding heart threatening to jump out of my rib cage. Bulky footsteps trailed me, thundering louder and louder. A small stampede trailed after me.

“Going somewhere, boy?” Uncle Peter yelled. “You’ll never get a chance to heal. Not...after...I...get...through...with...you.”

His heavy panting echoed in the cramped stairwell. He was getting closer and closer.

“Not in three days, you won’t,” Aunt Janet said. “I promise you that.”

Her voice was shrill, a sure sign I was in real trouble. She was right behind him.

Great, more pain. They could at least tell me what I’d done. I hadn’t done anything bad at the baseball game. I even hit a home run—something that usually made them happy.

My hand shaking, I whipped open the door. I charged toward the window. My speeding heart sent blood rushing between my ears. Freedom was only six feet away. Out of the corner of my eye, an elephant-size blur barreled right for me. I shrank, but Uncle Peter seized my arm, digging fat fingers into my flesh.

He threw me. The room swirled. Pain slammed into my back. I had crashed into a wall, knocking the wind out of me.

Sweet Aunt Janet stormed over to me and backed me against the wall. “This. Is. Your. Fault.”

With each word, she slapped me across the face and slammed my head like a ping-pong ball into the hardwood paneling. Metallic swirled around in my mouth. Blood.

She wheezed and stopped. “Since it’s your damn fourteenth birthday tomorrow, they’re hunting you, putting us all in danger.”

God, her breath stank of peppermint gum, and her hands reeked of her gawd-awful rose perfume. I rubbed my throbbing cheek. “I don’t understand. Who can’t find me?”

“Shut up.” Aunt Janet folded her skinny arms across her flat chest. “I never should have agreed to raise you.”

I wiped my mouth onto my arm, turning it crimson. I kept silent. That’s a laugh. Yeah, I was real grateful. Nothing like getting the crap beat out of you because you’re not a Martin. My last name’s Costa, my mother’s maiden name.

A motorcycle roared outside my window. Let it be Rusty Owens, my self-appointed protector. His real name was Russell, but we all called him Rusty because of his red hair. He owned a fiery crimson bike and more than once rescued me from my daily beatings.

I rushed to the window and sighed. The bike was blue, not red, and some old, gray-haired, fat guy rode it.

Aunt Janet’s narrow face paled. Her thin lips, smeared with red lipstick, pinched together. She dropped her arms. “It’s them. I know it’s them. They followed us from the baseball game.”

I frowned. “So, whoever was at the game looking for me rides a motorcycle?”

She raised her arm and clenched her fist. “Didn’t you hear me?” She took a step toward me. With her wild green eyes and spiky blond hair, she loomed over me like an Amazon, ready to rip my guts out.

I cringed and looked away. Never look a rabid dog in the face.

“Get a hold of yourself,” Uncle Peter said.

  I peeked around.

Sweat poured down Uncle Peter’s face, and a lock of fuzzy orange hair stuck to his forehead. He glowered at Aunt Janet and slammed his fist into his over-sized palm. “They can’t find him.”

I swallowed a lump of fear into my churning gut. Who was after me? Nobody would tell me. But what terrified me more was that Uncle and Aunt were scared. Nothing ever scared them. Not social services, not the courts, not the police. Nada.

Aunt Janet ran her hand through her Sonic The Hedgehog-cut ™ blond hair and paced around the room. Her high heels clicked on the hardwood floor. “What will we do?”

“Keep him locked in the cellar,” Uncle Peter said. “If he’s beat down...”
