“You can’t tell our secrets, beautiful,” he hissed out, his hold on my throat making me struggle for air. “That’s a big no-no.”
“I only wanted—”
“To help,” he sighed, his hold loosening.
Blood trickled from his nose and a gash over his eyebrow. His lip was split, the blood trailing over his chin. His usually perfect hair was a wild mess on his head.
“I know, Ever. But if he needed to be told and brought in, you should’ve told us. We would’ve done it.”
“I don’t want you to do it,” I wept, my emotions all over the place as Nev’s hold tightened. “He’s mine. I choose. I choose!”
Nev didn’t get to say anything because Raiden appeared behind him in his shadow form, his red eyes blazing. It only took me a moment to see he held his sword.
“No!” I screamed as Raiden attacked.
I thought he was going to gut Nev. In a last-minute decision, he must have decided on a different course of action because the hilt of his sword connected with Nev’s head, knocking him out. Nev landed in a heap on the floor, the blood from his head wound seeping out. I was released and slid to the floor, gasping for air as I stared up at Raiden.
He shimmered and resumed his normal form as Eric, Damien, and Brandon burst into the dorm, swords raised.
“Heal him,” Raiden growled to Brandon.
Brandon swooped down and got to work as Raiden lifted me to my feet. He tilted my chin up, inspecting me with those intense aquamarine eyes before he trailed his fingers along my jaw. He thumbed my bottom lip, and hope sprung to life within me as he leaned in, his hands moving to cradle my face.
His healing swept through me. I knew Eric and Damien were in the background putting out the fire licking at Nev’s curtains. I knew Brandon was finishing healing Nev. I knew Nev now sported a new set of vorbex handcuffs.
And I also knew I was in trouble. A lot of trouble.
“Come,” Raiden commanded softly, pulling away from me and turning to the door.
I swallowed hard and cast a look at Eric and Damien who wore matching looks of worry.
“Where are we going?” I whispered as I followed Raiden to the Conexus house.
He didn’t answer me, his steps sure and steady. He threw the front door open, startling everyone else in the living room.
“Raiden—" Chloe started.
“Not now,” Raiden snapped, heading for the basement stairs. “Ever. Now.”
I followed behind him, taking in the worried and anxious looks on everyone’s faces before I followed Raiden down the stairs. We stopped in front of a large, ornate looking mirror in the back of the room.
“What are we doing?” I ventured softly.
“You’ve been a very bad girl,” he finally said, turning to face me. “And bad girls get punished.”
“Xanan?” I whispered, fear coursing through me. “Raiden, please, understand I was only trying to protect everyone—”
The portal lit up, and Raiden held his hand out to me.
“This is for your own good.”
“What about us? Is that it then? We’re over?” My eyes burned at the revelation. I knew it was a possibility, but I’d thought I had him on my side, no matter what.
“You promised to follow me wherever,” I whispered as I placed my hand in his. There was no way I’d be able to escape him. He was my other half. He’d find me on the moon if he wanted to.
“We’re improvising,” he said softly, pulling me against his hard body.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered, staring up at him. “A-Are we done? Are you taking me to the dungeons? Will we be OK? We-we’re not going to be together now because I screwed up?”
“Yes,” he said, not elaborating on which of my questions he was answering.
Instead, he hauled me through the portal, the warmth and crushing feeling surrounding me as we spiraled to wherever the hell Xanan was.
If I had to guess, this bad girl was about to get punished.
