  Prologue

  Ashley

The lights streamed past the car as Ashley drove to the station. She couldn't believe that he was leaving. She never had a sibling to get close with until Denon. They had grown so close over the last couple years. After all that, now he was leaving. She couldn't understand it.

"Do you have to go?" She asked for the thousandth time.

Denon chuckled, "There's nothing I can do anymore. I've signed up for duty. They expect me to be there in the morning. I doubt I can tell them my sister wants me to stay home."

She eased on the accelerator. No reason to get there in a hurry. The bus wouldn't leave for another couple minutes. This might be the last time she saw him. She wanted to remember this moment as best as she could. Maybe, she would even work up the courage to finally tell him how she felt. As if.

  "Denon?"

"Yea, sis?" He responded, tilting his head toward her.

"There's something I've been meaning to tell you." She could feel the swelling in her eyes. The last couple days had been hell. Every time she saw him around the house she fought back the urge to cry. It was no secret that she wanted him to stay. As if she could change his mind. He wanted to change and save the world. No words would ever that away that resolve.

"Don't do that," his voice wavered. "You know that I can't go to the army base with tears in my eyes. I'll be the laughing stock of the base."

She bit her lip. This wasn't the time. There would be other times to confess her feelings for him. As long as he came back in one piece. The 24/7 news blared about the fallen soldiers that died during their deployment. She dreaded the idea of his name coming on there.

She rounded the corner and saw the bus at the front of the station. She looked down, it would leave in two minutes exactly. The buses were punctual like that, she had learned that the hard way.

She had delayed him for as long as possible. A little part of her had hoped that this car ride would give her the courage to tell him how she felt. Tell him she harbored feelings for her brother. Feelings that were taboo and forbidden.

It would be greedy of her to confess this to him now. He was off to a different part of the world, where she would be nothing but a distant memory. She parked behind the bus.

"I guess this is goodbye. For now." He held his hands out to both sides.

She pushed against him, letting him wrap her tight. She stifled back tears as she dug her head into his shoulder. Squeezing at his back she took in a long breath, "Don't you get injured out there." She pulled her head back and felt the tears roll down. "Make sure you come back to us."

"Don't do this to me, sis." With his thumbs he rubbed the drops away and pulled her close. Panic began to take hold of Ashley as her face came closer to his. Their lips were inches apart and she closed her eyes.

She felt a kiss on each cheek. With her lips all puckered she opened her eyes. He grabbed the handle and opened the door. His knapsack fell on the concrete floor with a thud. He grabbed the top of the car and hoisted himself out.

"Give everyone my love." He heaved the sack onto his back. A final wave goodbye as he ran to the front of the bus. The doors opened with a low hiss. Just like that he was gone.

Ashley let it all sink it. Let the image of him became a solid foundation in her mind. A foundation that she would keep upright until he came back home. For all she knew this would be the last time that she would see him. Countless nights spent praying that he wouldn't get hurt.

She shifted gears and pulled out when she heard a pounding. Her head shifted side to side. Denon sat at the back of the bus waving and blowing her kisses. She waved back as tears streamed down her cheek.

Denon was going to go out there and change the world. There was no doubt of that in here mind. She just hoped that he didn't changed along the way. The sweet caring and nurturing Denon was what she had fallen for.

The bus pulled away and she felt her heart break into two. A menacing feeling took over her. She whispered to herself, "Please come back to me."

  Chapter 1

  Ashley

Ashley Johnson tried to lift the bale of hay and set it next to the others. It was important that everything looked perfect tonight. The hay had to go in a complete circle around the barn. When she came up with this idea she didn't realize it would be this hard. He was worth all the work though.

Denon was due back any minute and the party she wanted to throw him was nowhere near done. The bales of hay were no lined up and no decorations hung from the beams.

"Looks like you could use some help." His voice send a shiver down her spine. She knew who it was, even though she hadn't seen him in a year.

She turned around and ran as fast as she could, "What are you doing home so early?"

He dropped his duffel bag and opened his arms wide. It had only been a year, but he had changed so much. The Denon that stood in front of her was the twice the size from last year. She had opened her arms and wrapped herself around his bulging muscles. It wasn't this hard to give him a hug when left.

"I thought I'd surprise you," he laughed as his eyes gazed around the barn. "Although, it looks like I spoiled something."

Ashley wrapped her hands around him. She hadn't been able to get him out of her mind since he
left. "It's not important. I'm just happy you're here," she began to cry into his shoulders.

He had called her a couple weeks ago to let her know he was coming home. It was completely out of the blue, but it gave her enough time to set this up. It almost seemed surreal that a year had passed since he left.

"There's no reason to cry sis." He hugged her close to his chest. Her legs lifted into the air as he twirled her around. It reminded her of when they were kids. Denon was the closest thing that she had to a family, even though she was only his step sister. He treated her like family.

"It's just been so long," she muttered.

Ashley gripped a tighter before finally letting go. She stepped back a few steps to marvel at how much he had changed. His army uniform was rigid and stiff, beside the part she wrinkled. Pinned above his left breast pocket were a wide variety of metals. She was sure that he had earned every single one of them.

"So what's all this?" Denon walked around the old red barn taking in everything.

"It was suppose to be your welcome back party." Ashley moved in front of him. She pointed at each area of the barn explaining to him what she had envisioned.

"Looks like your in need of some dire help." He began to unbutton his shirt and Ashley felt her face grow warm. Always like Denon to offer to help, even when he wasn't supposed to. That's why he'd joined the army; to give back to the country that raised him and help those in need.

"I can't have the man of honor working on his own party." She buttoned his shirt back up, taking note of the white wife beater underneath. She had the biggest urge to rip it off him and take him right there. Almost every night, for the past year, she spent fantasizing about him.

Each late night would start the same. She would try to fall asleep, but there would be a knock at her window. Scared at first, but then she would realize it was Denon. She would open the window and no one would talk. His lips would brush against hers. It would get hot and steamy from there. She would always feel guilty afterward. These weren't the right thoughts a sister should have of her step brother.

"Nonsense. I do what I want," he blurted out as he grabbed her by the side and lifted her. The ground left from underneath as Denon lifted her onto his shoulder. Ashley screamed and hollered as Denon spun her around. She could feel her skirt rising with the wind. "The more you resist the worse it will get." She felt his smooth palm on her bottom. He gave her a slight tap and set her down on the furthest bundle. Her face grew flushed as his touch echoed through her body.

"This isn't fair," she said as she scrunched up her eyebrows and folded her arms. Ashley closed her eyes and saved the last couple minutes in the recesses of her mind. In her inappropriate mind that would play out in a different manner.

"Oh shut it," he laughed back as he lifted two bundles from the back of the pickup. He set one on each of his shoulders. Each one of those weighted at least one hundred pounds. The only way Ashley could move them was by dragging them on the floor. Meanwhile, he hoisted them on his shoulders like they were bales of cotton candy.

"The army has made you stronger," she giggled. With her eyes glued to him, she watched as his biceps flexed and hardened under the weight. A trickle of sweat rolled down the middle of his forehead. He never lost concentration as the sweat built at the tip of his nose. With a roll of his shoulders both bales dropped onto the ground with a thump. Dust flew in every direction like a rocket had just blasted off.

"That was one of the benefits of joining the army." He looked at her like he was going to continue, but turned around grabbing two more bales. As he walked toward the end of the barn his steps faltered.

"Is something wrong?" Ashley hurried to his side and put her hands on his back steadying him. He looked at her with his crisp green eyes.

Those clear emerald eyes were something that Ashley never forgot in the last year. How could she? Whenever she looked at the trees at the outskirts of the farm they reminded her of his eyes. It always brought a smile to her face.

He carried set the two bales next to the others and sat down. His chest heaved as sweat trickled out of every pore. A hold took control of her, one that she hadn't felt since the last time they were alone.

Ashley grabbed the bottom of her shirt and wiped his forehead. Something was wrong with Denon, she just couldn't put her finger on it. With all the sweat away from his face he looked up at her. Her heart skipped a beat as his shoulders dropped.

"This last year has reminded me what I care about the most," he said. His arms wrapped around her back and brought her closer to him. His head rested on her stomach. She was unsure of what to do. It had been so long since they were so close.

When she left Denon at the bus stop a year ago he was full of cheer and happiness. Even, excited about what he might see. Something must have happened while he was out there. Something that seemed to tear at him from the inside. She didn't want to believe that he had changed. Her hands cradled the back of his head. She felt his warm breath against her body.

Her hands down the side of his neck, coming to rest on his shoulders. She knelt until she could look into his eyes. All that welcomed her was his forehead, his eyes darting to the ground. She placed one hand on his chin and pulled. His head didn't budge at first. She insisted further and soon They stared into each others eyes. A broken soul stared back at her.

  "What happened?" She whispered.

He pushed her aside and ran his hands through his drenched hair. "A lot happened. It's all hard to explain." The hurt in his voice was clear.

She had heard it before. Her father used the same tone before he left her and her mom. At the time, she didn't think to question him. She was too young, how could she know? The next day he was gone and ever since she blamed herself. Maybe, if she had gotten her father to talk he would still be here. She wasn't going to mess that up with Denon, not when he meant so much.

"I'm not letting you go until you tell me something," her voice hard with resolve.

He rubbed his face, his eyes darting between the outside and her. He finally settled on the outside," This last year has been the best time of my life. It was also the worst." He looked at her, "I wanted to change the world. To make it a better place." He got up and walked around, Ashley's eyes never left him.

"I was so concentrated on changing the world I didn't see how it changed me. I left all the people that I cared. I left...," he got caught on his words. His eyes locked on Ashley and she felt something inside. She rose as he walked toward her. There was a force that bleed out of his every pore. One that wouldn't let her look away. "...I left you," he whispered. His hands cupped her face and his lips landed on hers.

When Denon had left Ashley never got the chance to confess how she felt about him. At the time she wasn't sure what she felt was even real. Fearful of ridicule she never told anyone of her feelings for him. By the time she was sure of herself it was too late. He was gone.

The last couple weeks had been a constant battle with herself. It was full of questions she had no way of knowing the answer for. Should she confess or not? Could she jeopardize her relations with her for a silly crush? She had the answer to those questions, now that his lips pressed against hers.

Denon pulled away and looked at her, a look of hurt crossed his face. "I'm sorry. I don't know why I did that." He grabbed his shirt and duffel bag. Before, Ashley even realized what was going on he was gone. The door to his pickup truck slammed shut. Her lungs burned as she ran after the truck.

"Denon! Denon! Wait!" She screamed. No matter how hard she tried he wouldn't hear her from the roar of his pickup truck. Even if he did hear her she wasn't so sure he would stop.

  Chapter 2

  Denon

Denon stepped out of the shower and rubbed away the steam on the mirror. What the hell was wrong with him? He let his emotions get the best of him and he kissed his own sister. In his mind he had ran the scenario countless times. Their bodies touching close. His hands running through her chestnut wavy hair, stopping at the back of h
er head. His hand easing her forward and their lips finally touching.

How sweet and luscious she tasted, some sort of berry lipstick she wore. Denon had thought she felt the same way, there was only one problem. As he moved his lips, hers did nothing in return. He felt as if he were kissing a statue, nothing like how he had imagined it.

When he opened his eyes her blank blue eyes stared back. A surge of pain took hold of Denon. It was almost as if someone rip his heart open his chest and squeezed his heart. He wanted to hurl. He couldn't take it. Now here he was back home.

There were many things he had seen while serving his country. Things that he would have to live with the rest of his life. He wasn't proud of all the things that he had done. He did them cause that's what the top brass commanded of him.

It was a hard and long time being without those he loved. Through it all one constant thought kept him sane. One thought that made him persevere through it all. The one he clinged to when everything had gone to shit. One image that burned a whole in the back of his skull; Ashley smiling.

The way her skin crinkled at the edge of her mouth giving way to the hidden freckles. Her hair floating behind as they sat on the roof of the barn, pinkies touching. Her bubbly giggle that sent shivers down his body. No matter where he was or what was doing that thought pushed him forward.

Before he left to fight for his country he was as carefree as could be. Maybe, sometimes a little too unconcerned with how his life would turn out. Through the best days of his life, before the army, Ashley was there by his side. He never asked for someone like her in his life. She just became part of it when his father remarried. He never realized, until he was half a world away, how she was always there for him.

When his father got married he wanted to hate his stepmother and her daughter. At first this he succeeded. He tried his best to keep her out of his life. To push her away at every turn. It didn't last long. No matter how he tried she always came back to him. Eventually, Denon just grew tired of pushing. Instead, he embraced his new sibling and became the big brother.

The brother who was there to comfort her when the girls at school picked on her. The brother that made sure her boyfriend treated her right. Her dating always hurt the most for some reason. Seeing Ashley with other boys tugged at his heart. He could never get used to the idea no matter how hard he tried. At the time he didn't realize his feelings for her.
