It had struck me then, like a bolt of lightning—I didn’t want Dexter to be done. What he’d done to me back then was awful, and maybe I’d never forgive him for it. But from the sound of things, he’d been backed into one enormously terrifying corner, and he’d done what he’d needed to in order to survive.
Nobody had asked him to come find me a week after I’d been turned to give me tips on how to be a successful werebear. Nobody had sent him to do damage control, to make sure that the silly teenage girl didn’t run her mouth and tell the townsfolk about their non-human neighbors.
Nobody had asked him to talk me down when I was feeling particularly miserable about my ‘condition’, or hold my hand when I was too scared to shift, or make sure I never went too long without a hunt.
Nobody had asked him to be my friend.
Which was why I’d slapped Deacon when he’d finished his little speech, and when he’d looked outraged, I’d simply said, “That was for trying to kill me. I’m itching to return the favor, though, so you’d better run while you still can.”
That was also why, when Dexter showed up at my college a week later, claiming he had forgotten that I’d been planning on going to the same school, I’d just shrugged and sat with him all through orientation. I’d also gone to lunch with him every day since, befriended his friends, shared gossip and rumors, and found myself trusting him with every fiber of my being.
I hadn’t regretted that decision yet.

Dex was still waiting for me to respond to his asinine suggestion, but I couldn’t calm down enough to tell him all the ways in which he was wrong, and stupid, and wrong again. I took a long second to take in our surroundings, pleased to notice how close we were to my dorm—and the alleyway next to it that was perfect for what I needed to do.
“Come with me,” I said shortly, grabbing his hand and dragging him behind me.
To his credit, he didn’t resist. “Sierra, where are we going?”
Instead of answering him, I chose to hurry us along. When we reached the alleyway, I pushed him in ahead of me, and without preamble, I fused my mouth to his.
His arms went around me—like we’d been doing this for years, and not seconds—and he lifted me into his body. I licked at his bottom lip, delighted when he breathed into my mouth, and pulled my tongue in with his. There were sparks—hot, fiery, wonderful sparks—at every point of contact between us, but as much as I would have loved to revel in them, I remembered why I’d brought him into the alley.
Sighing, I backed him up against the brick wall, stealing a moment of pure bliss when my breasts pressed into his chest. Placing my hands on either side of his face, I pulled away from him, ignoring his groan of disappointment. I had something I needed to show him, and I wasn’t going to let him distract me; his teeth nipping at my neck was a solid effort, though.
Shifting only one part of my body was a little harder than shifting completely, but thanks to Dex’s rigorous training schedules, I had it down pat. Which was why it only took a few seconds for the hands on his face to turn into black, furry paws.
Moving very slowly, Dex raised his head and took in his current position. With only the mildest frown, he remarked, “If this is your idea of foreplay, it is kinky as hell, and I am so on board.”
I shook my head, laughing softly. “Good to know what your limits are,” I quipped, before leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his chin. “Dexter,” I began gently. “There’s something I haven’t told you, and considering what you asked me earlier, I think now’s a good time to tell you.”
“Hang on,” he interjected. “Are you about to tell me that you sometimes turn into a bear?”
I raised a sardonic brow. “I have claws right next to your eyes. Do you think this is the best time to crack stupid jokes?”
“Sierra, it’s always a good time to crack stupid jokes.” At my impatient growl, Dex grinned and bopped my nose with his. “Okay, okay, serious time. What did you want to tell me?”
Time to rip the Band-Aid off. With a small grimace, I confessed, “Deacon told me about you wanting to be a shifter.”
Dex’s smile faded, and he blinked a couple of times. He took in my discomfited state, and it was evident when he figured out that I wasn’t kidding—his eyes turned to ice. “When did you run into Deacon?”
“A week before I left to come here.” His eyes widened in shock, and I could see where this conversation was going with perfect clarity. Heading him off at the pass, I rushed on, “I know, I should have told you years ago, but Dex, that’s not the point I’m trying to make.”
A muscle in his jaw ticked repeatedly before he gritted out, “What is your point? I’m trying to guess, but I’m coming up empty here.”
I trailed one giant bear paw down his face, taking extra care to ensure that I didn’t scratch him. Dex didn’t look the slightest bit worried to have claws on his skin, though. He just looked pissed; the longer I went without giving him an explanation, the worse that was going to get.
“My point,” I replied, my gaze trained on his, “is that I have known about all the things that you’ve done for me—including the ones that you’ve kept from me—for almost two years. Not one of those things makes me think that you’re trying to make up for taking me to Deacon on prom night.”
His cheek wasn’t twitching anymore, but his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. “That’s not really a point,” he commented, his voice trembling slightly.
“You’re right about that.” I slid both paws lower, lower, lower, until my claws were resting against his sweatshirt; his heart pounded through his skin and his clothes, and I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. “You’ve never actually said anything to me,” I went on, tilting my head to pull his earlobe between my teeth; the hiss that escaped him was something I could definitely get used to hearing. “But I’m going to assume that the reason you’ve been so against asking me out is because you think I hold you accountable for this.” Ever so slightly, I pushed my claws into his hoodie, just hard enough to emphasize my point.
Instead of flinching, it seemed as though Dex was breathing a little harder, and almost of their own volition, my hips arched into his. “Jesus,” he gasped, resting his head against the concrete. “Where did you learn how to do this?”
“I’ve been fantasizing about you and me,” I breathed, purposefully ghosting my words against his skin, “against a wall,” my hips rolled forward again, and I smiled when I felt his erection grind against my pelvis, “for so very long.” Sucking on every ridge along the column of his throat, I mumbled, “You tend to learn a few tricks just to keep things interesting.”
His hands slipped down my back to the curve of my ass, and with a snarl that sounded almost animalistic, he squeezed the plump globes hard enough to make me cry out for more. “Finish your little speech, Sierra,” Dex growled, his fingers teasing my denim-covered crack. “I have interesting tricks to show you, too.”
Panting and feeling the tiniest bit light-headed, I gripped his sweatshirt tighter and declared, “You’re a moron if you think I blame you for any of this.” He frowned, but I’d had enough. This conversation needed to be over as soon as possible—which was around how quickly I needed to get him inside me. I steamrolled on, “The only person I’m going to be pissed at for eternity is Deacon—and your dad, maybe. You, on the other hand,” I purred, pausing to shoot him a broad smile. “You, I adore beyond measure.”
Dex stopped moving, stopped blinking, stopped breathing. He just stood in place, pale eyes wide and completely unguarded, staring at me like he couldn’t believe a thing he was seeing. Slowly, after an eternity, he managed to choke out a single word. “What?”
Still smiling, I raised my head, fluttering my lips against his. He still wasn’t moving, but I could smell stale Red Bull on his breath, and that was the only thing that mattered in the moment. “I said,” I replied after a few seconds had passed, “that I adore you, Dexter Myers. Beyond all known forms of measurement.
And for the past year, every time you started your self-loathing shtick, I have wanted to jump you. Not because I find it an irresistible trait in a man,” I rushed to add, in case he got the wrong idea. “But because it was the only surefire way I could think of to shut you up.”
Some of the color had come back into his face, but Dex still looked a little shell-shocked. “Does that mean,” he asked me, his voice soft. “That you dragged me in here tonight because you’d finally reached your limit?”
With a small shrug, I said simply, “Yeah.”
“Thank God,” he muttered, tightening his hold on my ass. “I didn’t know how much longer I could go on pretending I didn’t want to touch you.”
I leaned into him, letting my mouth hover over his. “So stop pretending.”
Dex was more than happy to comply.
All at once, he hoisted me off the ground, his lips teasing, parting, kneading mine. My legs wrapped around his hips, and I moaned into his mouth at the feel of his tongue against mine. He pushed his erection into the apex of my thighs, and the delicious friction turned my spine into jelly. When he nipped at my lower lip before sucking it in between his teeth, starbursts clouded my vision, and not a moment later, the sound of fabric ripping rent the air.
In a daze, I pulled away from Dex to look down at my hands; the shredded remains of his sweatshirt were clutched in each fist. “Sorry about your shirt,” I offered, throwing the pieces away. My eyes fell on his sculpted bare chest, and my mouth went dry.
“I have five more just like it,” Dex replied, sounding completely disinterested in what I was saying.
I could hardly blame him—the trail of hair leading from his abdomen to the top of his jeans had me in a thrall. I really wanted to touch him. But I needed my hands back. And Dex had moved on to placing scorching, openmouthed kisses against my jaw, going down my neck, and I was having trouble remembering my own name.
His teeth clamped down on a spot right behind my ear, and I whimpered, loud and long. “I want to touch you,” I gasped, desire turning into a vicious ache that I felt down to my bones. “I can’t turn back, but I want to touch you so badly.”
For a moment, Dex didn’t say anything. But before I could whine at him some more, he set me down on my feet. Ignoring my insistent protests that he pick me up right away, he threw me an enigmatic look and said, “I have something that can help with that.”
I frowned at him—this was hardly the time for cryptic puzzles. He walked a little deeper into the alley, and keeping his gaze focused on me, Dex shuddered and trembled, his eyes rolling into the back of his head. The air around him shimmered with life and magic and unknowable secrets, and I didn’t want to believe what I was seeing, but in a few seconds, my assumption was proven right.
In the exact spot where Dex had been standing, there was now a large bear with light brown fur, crouching close to the ground.
My mind raced as I tried to figure out when this could have possibly happened—and how it could have happened. Clearly, Deacon had been wrong, but how had I not noticed Dex’s change? And more importantly, why the hell had he hidden it from me?
I opened my mouth to tear him a new one, when a low, more guttural version of Dex’s voice came from the bear. “Catch me if you can.”
Was he kidding?
Dex-the-bear sent me an exaggerated wink and a playful snarl before he turned around and raced off into the dark. Dumbstruck, I stood unmoving, staring at the trail of dust he’d kicked up, and slowly, the reality of my current situation sunk in—Dex was a bear shifter. Dex wanted to play. Dex wanted me to catch him. Dex would be completely naked when I did what he wanted.
A delighted smile curved my lips as I hastily shed my human skin for my furry alter ego. The man wanted to throw down like animals in the wild. Who was I to refuse him?

One of the best things about my college campus was its proximity to what I liked to call the Great and Beautiful Woods; it had an official name, of course, but I preferred to use mine. These woods were pretty much perfect for every need a young, lonely bear shift could have. The trail leading into the dense forest was dark and poorly kept, making sure no humans ever wandered into the wild, no matter how much they’d had to drink. The trees in the deeper areas of the forest were more spaced out, leaving more than enough room for larger animals—bears, for example—to explore the place at leisure, without smashing into a bunch of tree trunks. And like most other forests, this particular one was home to a great many varieties of smaller, less aggressive animals, making it the ideal hunting ground for omnivorous werebears who wanted to stay off the human diet.
The woods had been my second home for the better part of two years, and if Dex thought he could hide from me in there, he needed to get his head checked.
I moved off the trail and plodded my way on to where I’d guessed he would be. His scent was faint in this particular section—he’d probably taken the longer, more scenic route—but there was one spot we always wound up stopping by, no matter how late our hunts ran.
I spotted our clearing up ahead and picked up the pace, my pulse inching higher the closer I got. The moment I stepped out from between the trees, I heard a low snarl from my right, and before I could do more than growl in return, I got pounced on by a panting Dex. I was more than happy to let him throw me to the ground, and I let him get a few nips in before I reared up and bucked him off of me.
With a deep rumble, I climbed onto his underbelly, licking my way up to his neck. I buried my snout where his scent was the strongest, and my contented rumble got louder. Dex’s paws came up around me and rolled us around until my back was against the ground, and when I felt him ripple above me, I began shifting back, as well.
Neither one of us had completely turned back into humans, but our mouths still found each other, open and ready; his tongue sliding against mine felt like home. My arms and legs wrapped around his lithe body, and I sucked on the tip of his tongue, relishing the groan that tiny action elicited. Dex kissed me harder, his lips pulling at mine hard enough to bruise; every tug sent a fresh wave of heat rolling through my body.
Slipping one hand away from his neck, I dragged my fingernails along his chest and down his firm abdomen. My fingers found the head of his cock, and I inhaled his moan as the tips of my fingers came away wet. Running my feet against the backs of his thighs, I brushed his erection once, twice, waiting for him to pull his lips away from mine, just so he could take in a little more air. Gasping, Dex dropped his head to the curve of my shoulder, and with a tiny smile aimed at the sky, I closed my fist around his cock; my thumb couldn’t touch my fingertips, and Dex couldn’t catch his breath.
“So,” I began conversationally, squeezing him in my grasp for a fleeting moment before loosening my grip. “How’d the bear thing happen to you, Dex?” He mumbled something indecipherable into my skin, and I clenched my fist again. “I’m sorry,” I said, smoothing my palm down his back as he shuddered above me. “I didn’t quite catch that.”
“Sadist,” he grumbled. His voice hoarse, he continued, “I don’t know how it happened. I just woke up one morning with fur on my legs, and I ran out here before Leroy walked in on me mid-shift.”
Raking my fingernails along his spine, I prodded, “Why didn’t you tell me when it happened?”
Dex rolled his eyes and ducked his head, opting to drag my nipple between his teeth over answering me. Liquid lust pooled in my gut, arching my back and pushing more of my breast into him. He rolled the aching nub around his mouth, alternating between suckling and biting, and my field of vision went white.
I hadn’t had nearly enough when he released my breast with an audible pop, and through swollen lips, he told me, “I wanted to surprise you for your birthday next week. But tonight felt like the right time to show you.”
For a long second, I had no idea what he was talking about; when my earlier question came back to me, my heart doubled in my chest. “You,” I rasped, sliding his cock between my damp lower
lips, “are the most wonderful person alive.”
His answering smile was surprisingly shy, but his precise hip thrusts were anything but. He rubbed against my clit every single time, and my spine arched high enough to lift me off the grassy ground. When he bent down again to bestow his attention on my neglected breast, I lost that last sliver of patience that had kept me tethered since our interrupted romp in the alleyway.
Dex tugged my breast into his oh-so-talented mouth, and the shot of bliss that jolted my system was almost too much for me to take. He laved and lapped at my nipple, pulling more and more flesh into his hot mouth. The sight of him with a literal mouthful of my breast was so incredibly arousing, and my pulse raced dangerously fast with a visceral need to have him consume all of me.
Moisture trickled down my thighs and I could feel his cock twitching in my grasp—two tiny actions that were potent reminders of what I had wanted to do mere moments ago.
I shifted around under Dex, angling this way and that until the head of his cock was pressing right against me. Our gazes met, and without letting go of each other or saying a single word, we moved together—him moving into me, and me moving up to take more of him. It happened slowly, the moment unhurried and perfect, and when he was fully inside me, I would have sworn up and down that I could feel him touching every inch of me.
