“Or three,” Shelby says, a mischievous look in her eye sparkling through a layer of tears.
“Or four!” I say.
We both laugh.
I lean forward and kiss her. I’ve never felt more love for my wife than I do in this moment, as our lips touch. This woman is going to bring our child into this world. I feel awe at the miracle of it all.
We part. Shelby rests her hand on her abdomen, as if feeling for the life that is already growing there.
“You know what this means,” she says.
“What?” I ask.
“The Meijer house will soon have another heir to hunt down the legendary Meijer Ruby,” he grins.
“And hopefully fall in love, somewhere along the way.”
My smile broadens. And then, because I can’t help it, I kiss her again.
