Defeating the Odds

The master bedroom is behind two white doors. I turn to Damon and smirk at him, before pushing the doors open. The room is huge and comes with an en-suite and, wait for it…

“Holy shit, is that a balcony?” I laugh at his response as he marches over to push the double windowed doors open. Fresh air swirls into the room, making my body shiver. I walk over and wrap my arms around Damon’s trim waist, loving the feel of him there.

  “You like?”

“Nick and Violet did great. I love it.”

  “Wicked. Then it is ours.”

We stand there, taking in the surrounding fields where we will start our life together as a couple. This feels right. Everyone out there deserves this kind of love and happiness in their lives.

It is crazy that we have finally done it. We have come together to find the perfect house for us. Who would have thought that we would be here after such a short time? But here we are, Ford Matthews and Damon Vardy, defeating the odds and finding love in the most unlikely of places.

This is our story. Now you need to make yours.

The last eight weeks have been an absolute whirlwind with Damon, who has been training for his first fight back in the cage. My training had been hectic also. I rub my hands over my jeans, wiping the sweat away. I have no reason to be nervous. Damon will do amazing tonight. He is ready for this fight. I did have some worries about how he was going to control his temper, because I know some fighters will use his sexuality and his time in rehab against him. Use it to rile him up. I adjust my t-shirt and zip up my jacket, nervous about showing Damon. When the idea popped into my head, I knew that I had to do it.

I walk down the narrow corridor towards Damon’s locker room. I am wearing a ‘Hot Head Vardy’ VIP pass on a lanyard around my neck. Not that no one knows who I am. They not only know me as the footballer, but they now know me as Damon’s boyfriend, so no one stops me.

I stand by the open door and see Damon getting his hands wrapped ready for the fight. His earphones are in, and I bet I know what he is listening to. He has a fight playlist. I turn when I hear my name being called and see Sam walking towards me, with Callum behind her, carrying the box. We are all wearing a zipped hoodie for now, to cover up the surprise for Damon.

“Are you ready to show him?” she asks me. I nod my head, emotion thick in my throat at the thought that he will get angry and upset with me. He has done so well with his temper over the last few months. He has made me proud of him. “Come on, you big dummy. He will love them.” Sam drags me into the room, and it’s like Damon can sense me. His head snaps up and his gaze finds mine. A beautiful smile graces his face. I can’t stop myself from following suit.

  “Hey, babe.”

  “Are you doing okay?”

“Yeah. Are you? You are about to go out there and beat the shit out of some guy.” He chuckles and hooks his finger in my belt loops, pulling me closer.

“I have a surprise for you,” I say on a whisper against his lips. Damon frowns at me as I slowly slide the zipper down on my jacket and turn my back to him and drop my jacket to the floor. He gasps when he sees what I am wearing, I know he has a clear view of the black, v-neck t-shirt I am wearing. It has something printed on it that has a quote that means something to him.

  Powered by Fairy Dust

His eyes keep snapping between my face and the words on my shirt. I nod my head in the direction of everyone in the room, and he shudders when he sees that everyone is wearing them. His whole crew and family. His face says it all. He doesn’t need words to express how he is feeling.

  “Out,” Damon barks. Everyone listens.

  “So, do you approve?”

“I fucking love them. I love you.”

“I love you too, Damon. Forever and fucking always. Now, kiss me,” I demand, knowing that he will make me pay for it later. But for now, he complies. Our mouths seal in a kiss so passionate I am pretty fucking sure I will come in my jeans if we don’t stop. Every word, every feeling is being poured into this kiss. Our tongues play and battle until there is a loud bang on the locker-room door. We pull apart, panting. I rest my head against his, while we catch our breaths.

“You’ve got this, Damon. I believe in you and I love you. Olivia believes in you.”

  Damon

I was nervous. I was bouncing on the balls of my feet, waiting to be called into the cage. Max, my sports therapist, was massaging my shoulders and loosening my muscles. It made me laugh to watch Ford as he spied him touching me.

Sam, Callum and my family are all in the front, waiting to watch me fight. I can’t help but wonder if they are waiting to see if I will explode, lose my cool. I won’t though. I have Ford with me, my anchor.

I am secretly worried about him. Is he getting the niggles to place a bet? We are safe here in the locker rooms, but out there was the hub of it all. A large chalkboard will display all the fighters for the evening and their odds of winning. Old school. Would Ford look at it? He looks calm, but is it an act?

My song comes on Linkin Park’s ‘Points of Authority’. Max stops massaging me and I hand over my headphones and iPod to Ford.

I need to get in the right headspace.

I walk out of the locker room after Coach. Ford and Max follow me.

“Go ahead and find your seat, boy,” Coach says to Ford.

“No!” I bark. “I want him cage side.” Coach shrugs and shakes his head. He knew there was no point in arguing with me.

I pull Ford close to me before I step into the cage. My opponent, ‘Hard as Nails’, is already in the cage. He is flouncing around like some sort of flamingo, winding up the crowd.

“If you need me, give me a nod and I’ll be out of that cage like a shot. You got me?”

“Yeah, I got you. But you have me too. I am here, babe. I love you.”

“Love you too.” I kiss him in front of everyone and the flashes surround us. I enter the cage and face my opponent.

I can do this. I will not lose my temper. I will stay calm and do my job, the second most important thing in my life.

The ref steps in and I take another glance at Ford. He is focused on me. I believe him when he says his urge for gambling has gone.

Just as the ref steps back, ‘Hard as Nails’ flies at me. I manage to dodge him, but still get caught on the shoulder by his fist. I chance a look at Ford and he’s still focused on me.

“Shit,” I grumble as I let ‘Hard as Nails’ get another hit on me. He manages to slice my eyebrow open, and I now have blood pouring down my face. I wipe it away with the back of my hand and charge towards him with a series of punches and kicks to his stomach, legs and back. I don’t stop until I hear the first-round buzzer.

I stumble back to Coach and he immediately patches up my eyebrow.

“Are you doing okay?” I ask Ford.

“I’m fine. I promise you. Stay focused in that cage or else I won’t be coming again. I’m distracting you.”

  “You’re not. I am focused.”

“Boy, you are not focused. You never let someone get a hit on you like that. Now get back in there and make him tap out,” Coach demands. I nod my head and look at Ford. He nods encouragingly at me and I know that he has a handle on his demons. He’s focused on me.

I step back into the middle of the cage and as soon as the ref steps back, I throw punch after punch, causing ‘Hard as Nails’ to stumble on his feet. I swoop low and kick out his legs. Once he’s down, I pull on his arm and twist it behind his back. I stay focused on him, pulling until he decides to tap out.

The crowd goes wild as I stand back up and the ref announces me the winner. Ford and Sam fly at me in the cage, both telling me how proud they are of me. This was what victory felt like, winning by making someone tap out. Not beating them to a pulp until they couldn’t move.

My life will never be the same again, and I’m glad that I found Ford. He’s not the same person I chatted with at rehab; the guy who blamed me for everything. For losing property and being forced
into rehab. He had overcome fears himself. The fear of being hated, of being disowned if he came out as gay. I’m glad I am the one person who he believed in to help him.

Together, we healed each other and found each other. I never believed that there was one person out there for me, but then I found Ford. And I’m so glad he came to me when he did.

We fought hard and supported each other.

  We defeated the odds.
