“Oh,” said Wilfred. “That’s, uh, great.”

“See what confidence he has in us, Wilfred?” crowed Barnabas proudly.

“Yes, I do,” said Wilfred, a bit sourly. “Who, may I ask, is the client?”

  “Odin,” answered Anubis.

“Odin?” cried Barnabas and Wilfred at the same time.

“You’ve heard of him?” asked Anubis blithely, pondering his fingernails.

“Why, isn’t he a Norse god?” asked Barnabas.

“Indeed. I’m certain that he’s not Egyptian at all,” said Wilfred. “I thought that we would be living in the Egyptian afterlife, when all was said and done…”

“Well, plans change, you see,” said Anubis. “So you’ll be going to the Norse afterlife instead. Isn’t that wonderful?”

“Sounds a bit, well, cold,” pointed out Barnabas.

“Of course it is,” said Anubis. “I do hope you’ll find something more appropriate to wear.” He looked in the direction of a chariot pulling up. “But no time now!” he cried, clapping his hands in delight. “Here’s your ride. I’m sure you’ll find something warm to wear before you get there. Otherwise, you’ll probably freeze to death. But no matter. On your way now!”

With that, he waved them off, and paid them no more heed. Dismissed and knowing it was futile to argue, Barnabas and Wilfred walked gloomily over to the waiting chariot.

“And do be careful!” called Anubis as they boarded the chariot. “I hear they can be quite violent there! They are not as civilized as we are here, you see.”

“That is a most concerning statement,” whispered Wilfred. “I really don’t want to see what Anubis considers uncivilised.”

“Me either,” agreed Barnabas. But there was nothing for it; the chariot was moving and they were on their way to Odin and the other wild gods of the North.

  “Oh dear,” said Wilfred.

  “Oh dear, indeed,” said Barnabas.
