The Dog Merchants

by Kim Kavin

Special thanks to copy editor Noelle Barrick at Sunflower Editorial Services for her smart edits and overall support for the project, and to attorney Alan J. Kaufman, who reviewed the manuscript and gave sage advice on how to report key sections.

Also deserving of special thanks is Eric Lowenhar at Barron’s Educational Services, who continued to offer ideas that will benefit not only this book, but also my previous dog book, Little Boy Blue. Angela Tartaro, the editor of Little Boy Blue, also continues to champion my work and is a source of great support and friendship.

Fellow dog lover Debbie McManus at Book Expo America helped me see the bigger marketplace so my book can stand out in the crowd. Dave Sheingold is the most talented data geek I know and was a huge help with everything from Excel spreadsheets to big-picture editing. Gina Lamb is one of the sharpest line editors I’ve ever met and not only lent her careful eye to the first-draft manuscript, but also helped in selecting a title and cover concept.

Dan Merton at LS Media helped me envision the website DogMerchants.com, and Nicole Zeno and her team at Z2 Media made my vision a reality. I appreciate their attention to detail as well as their help with big-picture ideas.

Jennine Semanchik and Stacy Weiss constantly encourage me and are always available to help me relax with a glass of wine after a long week of writing. Jo Coudert, who died during the final editing stages of this book, was an exceptional writer and friend whose wisdom will remain with me for the rest of my life. Luisa Matarazzo trades insights from her own writing life to help make mine even more fulfilling. Mary Turkus is also a good friend and offers great insight into the world of bookstores.

Jeanne Craig and Lara-Jo Houghting made smart observations about everything from titles to early marketing videos. The Atomic Engineers are a great source of support, with special thanks to Gwen Moran, Amy Hill Hearth, Jen Miller, Kris Baird Rattini, and Lillian Africano for their feedback on early marketing concepts; to Caren Chesler, Pat Olsen, and Frances Benson for suggestions about getting cover blurbs; and to Leah Ingram for ideas about perfecting my promotional materials.

Marine magazine colleague Patrick Sciacca was helpful in selecting a cover concept, and he along with Dan Harding, Jake Lamb, Kenny Wooton, and Andrew Parkinson were endlessly generous about deadlines when I needed to take my focus off boats and place it wholly onto helping dogs. Eric Powell shared his expert knowledge of stock art, which helped me make polished promotional videos and more.

My parents, Marc and Donna Kavin, and my sister, Michelle Kavin, are my biggest fans, even when we argue at the dinner table about whose pups are best. I love them—and their purebred dogs—dearly.

Last but not least, my mutts Blue and Ginger watch me type until precisely four o’clock every afternoon, when they sit, stare, and bark at me until I step away from the computer. They then insist on a spirited walk along one of our many wooded local trails, and also a swim in a river or lake whenever possible. I may have saved their lives by choosing to bring them into my home, but they save me from myself every day. They are survivors whose hearts are filled with courage, honesty, and joy, and they are forever my inspiration.
