“Alpha Theron is sending someone to drop Liam off at the hospital emergency room,” Silas said. No sooner than the words came across, two men ran up the driveway, looked at Zeus and then Tyrone.
“Not this one, the one beneath the tree,” Tyrone instructed.
They nodded, left and carried Liam away.
Tyrone watched Zeus closely. “He’s healing fast like we do. I’m watching the bruising disappear. It’s amazing. Does all chimera heal that fast? Or is it just the military injections?”
“I’ll consult Hawke on that. Can you get a sample of his blood?”
Sometimes doctors required patients to take all kinds of samples from excrement to urine to mouth swabs. Maybe Sloan had supplies for that kind of thing. Tyrone went inside to the bathroom.
Beneath the sink, Sloan had several medical supplies, most were in unopened boxes. Tyrone finally found a blood testing kit in the back and took it outside.
“Found a kit,” he told Silas.
“Good, I’ll let Hawke know.”
Zeus would wake soon if not once he felt the prick in his finger. Tyrone shifted to the same form as before, grabbed Zeus’ hand and applied extreme pressure leaving no doubt that he would break his bone if Zeus fought.
As expected Zeus eyes flew open just as Tyrone pricked his finger. He tried to break free but couldn’t. Tyrone finished taking the blood and slipped it into his pocket. He met Zeus’ confused gaze.
“What the fuck are you?” Tyrone asked to mess with him.
He frowned. “I am ... I am Zeus.”
Tyrone squeezed the hand tighter and blocked the fist that came at him like a hammer. Zeus wasn’t human and had no protection from the wolf community. That knowledge unfurled and tempted his beast to destroy this chimera.
“No. Do not kill him. Teach him manners, but don’t kill him,” La Patron said.
Tyrone head-butted Zeus, three times, breaking skin which sent rivulets of blood down Zeus’ face before releasing him. Tyrone stepped back as Zeus hit the concrete porch step hard and released a loud groan but didn’t move.
Theron approached and stared down at Zeus who was trying to stand. “Pity La Patron won’t allow us to kill him. Feels it’s unfair, says the other chimera will deal with him and his kind,” Alpha Theron said sounding like a kid denied his favorite toy.
Tyrone gave Theron the blood testing kit. “This needs to get to Hawke asap. I’m still here a few more days, can you take care of it for me?”
Alpha Theron nodded. “Will do. So this one just walks free?”
“If he had attacked one of ours with no humans involved, we could destroy him. But the twins were protecting the human, so he gets to see the morning sun.” Tyrone shrugged. As much as he wanted to rip this asshole a new one, he understood his father was setting the game rules in place. Thomas would be notified of this trespass and Hawke would communicate anything he discovered from the blood sample.
As far as La Patron was concerned, this fight was between the mutated humans unless they came after Pack.
Tyrone left and was halfway home when the ground and trees shuddered and shook. The crash and boom of buildings followed, wreaking havoc on the otherwise quiet night. The ground rumbled again.
The twins met Tyrone in the copse of trees. “What was that?” Ryan asked.
“I don’t know, I’m contacting Theron, now,” Tyrone said heading back toward Sloan’s home.
“This guy does something with his voice,” Theron said. “Un-fucking-believable. He flattened the house and barn. Nothing but rubble, trees fell, looks like a tornado hit it. Fucking asshole. When he got to the road, the dick yelled, “I am Zeus.” Got into a truck and drove off. La Patron sure the other guys can beat this guy? What he did to the house and barn... it’s fucked up.”
“That’s a question for Hawke,” Tyrone said as he and the twins approached what used to be Sloan’s home.
CHAPTER 33
MIA, NOAH AND THE OTHERS arrived home from Denver later that night. Hungry they sat around the dining table eating whatever was in the main kitchen, discussing the Leviticus Club operation.
“Do you think the FBI will ever connect the dots to the club and the stonings?” Lizzy asked the others in a dry tone.
Thomas shook his head slowly. “Hard to say, but doubtful unless someone confesses.” He looked at Mia. “Which is a strong possibility.”
Mia shrugged thinking of Nathaniel Green. “Glad that’s over. No one deserves to be stoned to death.” She shivered and took another sip of her soft-drink.
Noah covered her hand with his before looking across the table. “Have you discussed Hermes and Zeus with Hawke or shared what Mia discovered about their team?” he asked Thomas.
“I told him bits of it and sent the information during our downtime at the hotel. We’ll probably talk tomorrow when he’s had time to go over it,” Thomas said. “He knew we were in the middle of the op and didn’t respond on it today.”
Noah nodded. On the flight home, they had discussed possible strategies to protect Liam but hadn’t finalized anything. It didn’t sit right with him that he had placed his cousin in danger, the sooner they came up with a solution the better.
In the middle of Lizzy’s next comment, Thomas straightened, stared ahead and then closed his eyes. Everyone at the table watched and waited for Thomas to tell them whatever he just learned.
He looked at Noah. “Zeus attacked your home. Liam was taken to the hospital. He used some sort of sonic waves on your place, destroyed, leveled the house, barn, and surrounding trees,” Thomas said meeting Noah’s shocked gaze.
“That motherfucker,” Noah yelled, slapping the table and standing so fast his chair hit the ground. Sparks flew all around him as the mist leaked from his control. The air dimmed and trailed behind him as he strode away from the dining area to their room where he kept a spare phone.
He placed the call to find out Liam’s condition. Fortunately, they were each other’s points of contacts and while the person didn’t tell him a lot, she assured him Liam was in the hospital receiving care.
Sloan sat in the chair, shoulders slumped with his arms hanging between his legs. Despair swamped him. He didn’t know what to do. Mia had become his world, his dream deferred, he couldn’t leave her or let her go. She was an innate part of him. Which meant accepting a role and place in the team. Besides they were safer with Thomas and the others than on their own.
The sane side of his brain told him all of that. The other side, the dark mist rumbled, sparked and rolled urging him to go after Zeus and anyone else who posed a threat to him, Mia and Liam.
“Noah,” Mia called just as the door to their suite opened and she walked inside. “What do you want to do?”
He inhaled deeply. Her scent filled him. Calmed him. He extended his hand to her. She took it and sat on his lap as he wrapped his arms tight around her.
“I want him safe. But I won’t betray the team, or us by going off half-cocked to get him. Plus, where could I take or send him that they couldn’t find him?” He shook his head. “Nowhere. If I go to him now, they’ll always use him as a lever to get a reaction from me.” He exhaled. “Seriously, I don’t know how to help him and it’s killing me inside.”
She stroked his back and held his head to her chest in silence. “We’ll think of something.”
“Sloan, Mia, we’ve got pictures of your place if you want to see,” Thomas said.
Eager to see the damage to his home, Noah said. “Where?” He and Mia left for the main area where Thomas stood in front of a monitor. “I’m sending this to the wall.”
Noah looked up, opened his mouth and snapped it shut. His home was nothing but rubble. The truck had been stored in the garage and was buried beneath the timber and bales of hay.
Mia gasped, her hand flew to her mouth.
“Zeus uses sound to create sonic waves, booms and this is the result,” Thomas said.
“Is that what came against our hotel room?” Mia asked,
reaching for Noah.
“Maybe a variation of it,” Thomas said. “For this much destruction, it takes time to inhale enough air for release. If he’d been fighting, running or doing anything that required energy he couldn’t do this kind of damage.”
“This happened after the fight with Liam?” Lizzy asked.
“That’s what I’ve been told. He must’ve left Denver, flew to Texas for information about Noah. No doubt he has access to your file. He was asking Liam about you when Ryder and Ryan got there. From what they’re saying, Zeus kicked ass,” Thomas said. “Tyrone knocked him out before things got out of hand.”
“Did he kill him?” Noah asked, hoping he didn’t. He wanted that pleasure.
“No. They won’t either. If the military chimeras attack the Pack, then they’ll defend themselves. In this case, the twins were attacked because they helped Liam, a human,” Thomas explained.
“I’ll call and thank them,” Noah said.
Thomas nodded before continuing. “Tyrone took a blood sample from Zeus. Hawke will check to see the differences in their serum and ours. We need to know who we’re dealing with.”
The others nodded in agreement.
“Where is Zeus now?” Noah asked in a low voice, vibrating with anger. He wanted another shot at that dude in the worst way.
“Took a private jet and left the area headed to DC. We don’t have a way to get him, yet. But we will address this shit, believe me,” Thomas said, his eyes taking on an unnatural glow. “That motherfucker crossed a line.”
Mia took his hand and squeezed it. “We’ll get him, just not tonight, okay?”
Noah looked at the remains of his home, inhaled and nodded. He would perfect his skills and return the favor to that asshole when they met again. And he was certain that was just a matter of time. Guys who called themselves gods needed to strut their stuff. “Okay,” he said calming down.
Mia leaned into him and brushed her lips against his.
“Tomorrow we start preparing our defense against the Greeks,” Thomas announced. “Next time, we’ll be ready for them.”
Noah tugged Mia close and walked toward their room. This was truly home now. Her, the others were family. “Next time,” he said.
