Findings from the World and Change in American Research Project on Patriotism after 9/11 (April, 2002); Jennifer Scanlon, The Selling of 9/11. According to the website, www.entrepreneur.com, flag purchases went up from 20 million to 50 million in 2001; one flag tie-pin manufacturer told Newsday that sales had leapt from 1,000 a month to 300,000. It wasn’t only flags. Patriotic merchandising included exclusive 9/11 Beanie Babies (a bear, America’, and a dog, ‘Courage’); ‘Liberty’ pillows (‘speak our heart and belief in country and freedom’); firearms (a Beretta ‘United We Stand’ pistol), pet accessories (Petsmart’s ‘Patriotic Cat Toy Value Pack’ – including a stars-and-stripes catnip mouse) and childcare items. The appeal of most of these products proved short-lived. ‘Little Patriot’ nappies, featuring a stars-and-stripes design, were removed from the market when it was pointed out that defecating on – or disposing of – the US flag, was a federal offence.
