MYSTERY SUSPENSE: Boxset
Page 9
"Okay, Jack, calm down."
I blew the horn, and a moment later, a big guy steps out in a leather jacket and black jeans.
"Is this him, Jack?"
"Yes, that what he said."
He leans down and looks me over. "Okay, smart guy get out."
"Maybe I made a mistake, just drop me off at the car lot and forget about it."
"I said, get the hell out."
I climb out of the truck, and the big man sticks his .38 into my ribs. "Stay out here, Jack, and make sure no one shows up. I'll take care of this dirt bag."
Chapter Ten
Richard takes me inside the building to the right corner inside the room.
"Okay, why are you looking for me?"
"Why don't you tell me?"
"What are you talking about?"
"My name's Randall Stone. I'm the guy you used as a punching bag."
"I think you lost your mind, Mister Stone."
"Are you standing there and telling me you’ve never seen me before?"
"That's right. Now, tell me, what the hell is this all about?"
"All I know is a big guy, wearing a black, leather jacket came into my office this morning. He said his name was Richard Lewis and when I wasn't looking, he hit me in the head with a blackjack. Two hours later, as I was leaving Barbara Ray's apartment, he attacked me again."
"So, you came out here looking for me, without any protection?"
"Yes!"
"I give it to you, my friend; you have a lot of balls. That's too bad. I'm going to have to take care of you, Stone. I don't want anyone to know where I'm hiding."
"You don't want Tim Jones to know where you're hiding."
"You are right. It's too bad that you stuck your nose in my business."
"I guess it isn't my day."
"Yeah, you got it, partner." He pointed a pistol at my head.
The warehouse door opens, and we hear footsteps approaching the room.
"Hey, Jack, is that you?" Richard called.
"Jack's taking a little nap. If you two move a finger, I'll kill you where you stand."
Chapter Eleven
A man wearing a black leather jacket was Tim Jones. He's standing in the doorway with a .45 in his hand.
“Well, gentlemen, you picked a nice hideaway. Thanks, Stone, for finding Richard. You see, I knew you wouldn't take my money if I offered to pay you. So, I posed as Richard in this leather jacket. I knew you'll get mad enough to track him down on your own."
"You are a smart man, Jones." I said.
"Thanks, it was easy. I followed you, and you delivered Richard to me."
Richard's eyes widened. He said, "Tim, let’s talk this over. I wasn't going to tell the cops about you. I'll even take the rap on that trafficking charge."
"Richard, I like you, but business is business."
"No, Tim, wait," Richard yelled.
The .45 bucked twice, sending two deadly missiles into Richard's chest. The force of the bullets threw him backward over a desk.
"Now I'll take care of you, Stone."
"You know something, Tim? You're not a good shot, you didn't even kill Richard. Get him, Richard." I yelled.
Chapter Twelve
The lie worked. Tim turned around quickly. He was too far away for me to jump him so I grabbed the next best thing, the light switch.
"Alright, Stone. I should have expected some trick from you. But I have lots of time, and you have no gun. Let's play cat and mouse."
I hid behind some crates as Tim got closer. He was right about the gun. I felt as helpless as a balloon in a needle factory. Then I noticed, it was three crates on top of the one I'm standing behind. It was a long shot, but better than none at all. As he got closer, I waited.
"I'll find you soon, Randall. My eyes are adjusting to the darkness. I will find that light switch soon, and I will kill you."
As the words left his mouth, I knew his location and pushed the crate over on his head.
It hit Tim and knocked him off balance. I raced out and attacked him. My left hand caught his fat stomach, and the pistol hit the floor. I delivered a roundhouse, connecting with his jaw, and he dropped to the floor.
"Alright, Tim, stand up."
"Okay, Stone, I have had enough."
"I haven’t, you hit me twice today, and I need to get even."
I walked over, and gave him a left cross and a right upper in the breadbasket. He doubled over and dropped to the floor.
I pulled out my cell phone and called Vic.
"Homicide, Vic Morgan."
"Hello, Vic, it’s Randall Stone."
"Hey, Stone. You have any luck?"
"Well, come down to the warehouse section on Irvine Road. I have three people here. Richard Lewis is dead, Jack Reed, he's a friend of Richard, I think he's dead also. And Tim Jones, he killed them both."
"Don't tell me, you killed Tim Jones."
"No, he's alive. I just had to smack him around a little."
"Stay there, Stone, we are on the way."
I got a rope off a crate and tied up Tim Jones. He moaned, and I kick him in the stomach. I felt a lot better about myself and my ego for closing another case.

Chapter One
Mondays are usually slow. I started not to come to work. But when the mailman delivers a final notice for the phone bill, I got dressed and dragged my ass to the office. It turned out to be a smart move; I could hear the phone ringing when the elevator doors opened.
"Randall Stone's Investigation, may I help you?"
"May I speak to Randall Stone?" a female voice said on the line.
"This is Stone."
"My name is Sandra Gibson. I'm going to be married in six hours."
"Well, congratulations, I hope you have a wonderful life."
"But my groom is gone. He disappeared. I need your help."
"Look, Miss Gibson, if he doesn't want to get married, I can't make him."
"No, Mister Stone, it's nothing like that. He's in trouble, I'm sure about that. I'll pay anything you say, just get out here fast please."
"Okay, where are you?"
"I'm at 402 Sun Dart Drive. Please hurry, Mister Stone."
"Alright, Miss Gibson, I'm on the way."
Chapter Two
The address she gave me turned out to be on the west side of town. It's a two-story brick house standing on an acre of land with a driveway running from the road around the house to the back gate.
The butler was standing outside waiting when I pulled up. I introduced myself, he turned, and I followed him through the home to a room in the back.
When I saw Sandra Gibson, she's gorgeous. She had short auburn brown hair, big brown eyes, a small, thin nose, small lips, and curves in the right places. Her groom must have been stupid to run off or he might be dead.
"Mister Stone, I'm afraid there isn't a moment to lose. So, I'll tell you what I know quickly."
"What's his full name?"
"His name is Kevin Smith. Here's a picture of him."
"He's a handsome fellow. When was the last time you saw him?"
“Last night.”
“Tell me about last night.”
"We were out together at an after hour club called The Bar."
"Is that the place Rob Wayans runs?"
"Yes, we never been there before, but I think that's where it started."
"Where what started?"
"When we were leaving around three, I called a taxi. I was just giving the driver Kevin's home address when, suddenly, Kevin told me and the driver to go."
"You know why?"
"No, I thought perhaps he seen someone coming from the club. But when I asked him about it, he said it was his nerves. I thought he was nervous about our wedding day."
"I see."
"Today, he was supposed to call, but he didn't. At noon, I called him, but he wasn't home. But I talked to the cleaning lady, she said when she arrived, there’s a note posted on his door. She gave it to Kevin, and it seemed to upset him. Mister Stone, what are we going to do?"
"Have you been over to Kevin’s place?"
"No, I haven't."
"Got a key?"
"Yes, I have one."
"Alright, Miss Gibson, you have the keys, let’s go."
"What should I do about the guests coming to the wedding?"
"Nothing right now, we may be lucky."
Chapter Three
We drove east out Richmond Road, across Man-o-War, and made a left into Brandy Wine Apartments. Kevin’s place was across from the manager's office, a small, and one bedroom apartment.
Sandra entered the room first and switched the lights on. "There are only three rooms, Mister Stone. What do you want to do?"
"I want to find the note first. He might have left it in here somewhere. You try the bedroom, and I'll start with the waste basket."
Sandra was in the room several moments, and I could hear her crying. I didn't know what to say, so I decided to ask her some questions.
"Sandra, what does Kevin do for a living?"
"He worked with a law firm on Boardwalk Drive in the Security Bank building. Wait a minute, Mister Stone, I found it. The note the cleaning woman spoke about. It's the same paper stuck to the door. It was on his dresser.
"Give it here, let's see. Dear Carol Martin, guess who I ran into last night? Kevin Smith. I suggest you meet me at the corner of High and South Upper at 10:30. The note isn’t signed."
"I never heard Kevin mention a Carol Martin. A public street wouldn't be a place to see someone five hours after you met them."
"You’re right, Miss Gibson."
"Mister Stone, did you find something?"
"A page torn out of the classified directory, listing talent agencies."
"May I see it?"
"Sure, Miss Gibson, go ahead."
"The last agency is circled, Elite Entertainment. But he never had anything to do with the entertainment business, Mister Stone. What do you think it means?"
"I don't know."
"Are you going to check with Elite Entertainment?"
"No, my first stop is going to be where you were last night,
The Bar. I know the owner, Rob Wayans, maybe he can help."
"You need me to come along?"
"No, I'll try to deliver your groom as quick as possible."
"Do you want your money now?"
"Let's work this cash on delivery."
Chapter Four
The Bar was one of those illegal joints operated by a man who paid the cops to look the other way. Rob Wayans didn't pay them with money though; he fed them information about the underworld. Rob was the biggest snitch in town. If the organization ever found out about him, he was a dead man.
I parked on the street and walked around the building to the rear entrance.
"The place is closed, Mister." a female voice said.
"Thanks for telling me."
"What do you want, Stone?"
"Is that you, Sally?"
"Yes, who else would be in this dump this time of day? Now, what do you want?"
"I need to have a few words with the boss. Is Rob around?"
"No, he's not."
"Is he at River Park?"
"You mean, it hasn't hit the news yet?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Stone, Mister Wayans was shot to death this morning."
"What happened? Did the organization find out he was a rat?"
"The only thing I know is sometime between 9 and 11; a woman shot him twice in the chest. I was getting ready to shut this place down."
"You have any idea who this woman might be?"
"No, the police said it was a woman."
"Did they have a description of this woman?"
"The law isn't talking much about it. If you want to know more, I would drive out to River Park."
Chapter Five
When I turn into River Park, the street was blocked off by police officers. I pulled over on Armstrong Mill and walked down a side street, cutting through the back of Rob Wayans’ yard.
