“I’ll pay you ten thousand dollars if you get it back.”
“Okay, what’s your name? I like to know who I’m working for.”
“My name is Frank Moore.”
“Frank Moore, I heard of you.”
“How do you know me?”
“I heard you are a surgeon.”
“How did you know?”
“I think my mother told me about you. I’ll call you later.”
Chapter Ten
I called Lieutenant Morgan in homicide and told him where he could find a Franklin County private eye named Brad William. I told him why I had been up in Dennis’s room, only to find Brad instead if a particular lady’s necklace.
“You said you were looking for a necklace?” Vic asked.
“Yeah, I thought Dennis might have hidden them up there.”
“Who did the necklace belong to?”
“A woman I know.”
“What else?”
“The necklace might have been in Dennis’ car, which the shooter drove away in.”
“Yeah, you might be right.”
“What do you mean by might, Vic?”
“Randall, they may have it here.”
“Did they find some credit card statements of a guy named Frank Moore?”
“Yes, they have them.”
“These items have nothing to do with this murder case, right?”
“What are you trying to say, Randall?”
“So, I have $5,000 for the police fund if the necklace and the credit card statements are returned to me.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes, I’m serious. The necklace was given to my friend, a gift from a dead police officer. It’s priceless to her, and she’s willing to pay to get it back.”
“Okay, pal.”
Vic opens his desk drawer and drops the necklace on his desk.
“Here, Randall, is this what you are looking for?”
I studied it a moment and frowned. “That’s what I’m looking for.”
“You can have it.”
“No strings attached?”
“Just tell me the truth?”
“Dennis was blackmailed a woman with a necklace and her husband with the credit card statements. A Franklin County private eye named Brad Williams was sent to buy the statements from Dennis. But Dennis killed Brad and then was shot in Family Dinner yesterday night. Now, if Frank Moore’s name stays out of the paper, he will pay me $10,000. And for your kind help, I will give $5,000 to the police fund.”
“Okay, you have a deal.”
“I’m not doing this for the money. I just like making people happy.”
“Yeah, I know you are full of shit.”
Chapter Eleven
I left the police department and walked down Main Street to my car. I step inside with my eyes closed and head resting on the headrest. Judy, the poor girl, had fallen in love with a man who gave her a necklace with a cheap imitation pendant. I pulled out my cell phone and called Judy, asking her to meet at my office.
"I'm glad you called, Mister Stone, I need to talk to you."
"What about?"
"It is crucial that you find my necklace."
"I know you told me."
"No, I don't think you understand. My husband called me this morning and said he wants a divorce. I don't care that our relationship had died years ago. But that’s why it's so important you find my jewelry, it the only things I have to keep me close to Jerry."
"Okay, Judy. Meet me back here in two hours, and I'll see what I can do."
Chapter Twelve
There was only one decent thing I could do. I took Judy’s necklace to a jeweler and I had him replace the pendant with the real thing, costing me $3,000, then I went back to keep my appointment with Judy.
“Did you find my necklace?”
“Yes, the police found them in Dennis’ car.”
“The police found my necklace?”
“No, not exactly.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Well, Dennis was setting you up, Judy. He had the pendant replaced with cheap imitations. And he sold the real pendant.”
“That bastard.”
“Here’s the imitation.” I took it from my pocket and placed it on the table.
“Yes, but did you find my pendant?”
“Yes, Judy. Here it is.”
She held the necklace over her heart and tears ran down her cheeks. “Thank you, Randall, you are the best.”
“It’s was a pleasure.”
“Bye, Randall.”
“Bye, Judy.”
Chapter Thirteen
I drove almost to Millville and then I parked walking out on a cliff over the Ohio River. I pulled the cheap imitation pendant that the police found in Dennis car. I picked up a rock, wrapped it and the pendant in paper, and tossed it into the water.
Frank kept his promise. I gave him the credit card statements, and he paid me $10,000. I kept my promise and gave Lieutenant Morgan $5,000 to the police fund. After putting the $3,000 back in my account for the money I spent on the pendant, I earned $2,000 and a kiss for almost getting killed. But what can I say? That’s the life of a penny-pinching private eye named Randall Stone.
