“Oh.”
“Not yet,” he smiled, making her heart flip-flop along with her stomach.
She pried the lid open and found a beautiful, Irish wedding band nestled inside the box. She’d always wanted one. But he couldn’t have known that. She didn’t cry as she pulled it from the box.
“You’ve wanted one forever. I was always afraid one of the ass-clowns you were dating would get you one,” he said, taking it from her, turning it in his fingers.
“How did you know that?”
“I listen to you,” he replied simply. “It goes on your right hand, with the crown at the top, the heart facing in.”
She looked at him and shook her head.
“You even know how I’m supposed to wear it.”
He looked up at her with a frown, his brows drawing together.
“If I give a woman a ring, which I never have by the way, of course I’m going to know what it means. The hands are for friendship, which we’ve had for years,” he said, sliding the ring onto her finger and kissing her. “The crown is for loyalty, which you’ll never have to doubt. And the heart is for love.”
She bit her lip because she was tired of wiping her eyes and didn’t want to cry anymore.
“If I wear it this way—”
“It means you’re taken. And you are. I told you, I was tired of waiting,” he said with a shrug. She laughed and threw herself at him, knocking him back on the bed.
“I thought this Christmas was going to be the worst,” she whispered.
“I would never let you have an unhappy Christmas,” he replied, holding her hair back with both hands.
“No, you wouldn’t. You always take care of everyone.”
“I take care of the people I love.”
She smiled at the distinction, pressed her lips to his and enjoyed the feel of his hands moving from her hair, along her back.
“I’m pretty glad there was a storm,” she whispered.
“Me too. I’m also glad that we get to wake-up, just us, on Christmas morning.”
“Oh, I have gifts for you,” she said, starting to get up. He held her firmly in place.
“In the morning. We’ll exchange the others in the morning.”
His mouth captured hers, momentarily distracting her before she pulled back again and grinned.
“Others? I get more?”
He laughed, pulling her back and said, “Yes. There’s more. But for now, there’s just this.”
“Hmm,” she smiled between kisses, “this is good. Very good. Merry Christmas, Kyle.”
“Merry Christmas, Jordan.”
As she lost herself in him, she was certain that it would be hard to ever top this Christmas.
