ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Todd Wilkinson has been a professional journalist and author for more than twenty-five years, with assignments that have taken him around the world. He is author of several books, including the critically acclaimed Science under Siege: the Politicians’ War on Nature and Truth.
Turner adored his younger sister, Mary Jean, and he began to question his belief in God following her agonizing death from lupus while only a teenager.
Ed Turner had many virtues, but his cold, emotionally abusive behavior—and eventual suicide—affected Ted in profound ways.
Like many impressionable sons, Turner idolized his father, Ed Turner, a hard-driving entrepreneur who taught him the value of the hard work ethic.
Turner has fond recollections of his mother, Florence, who always regretted that she did not stand up to Ed Turner when he insisted that Ted be sent away to boarding schools.
Mary Jean Turner revered her big brother, Ted. “I loved her deeply,” Ted says. “When I was young, I prayed to God, asking that she be spared from more suffering.”
“The greatest gift I can give my kids and grandkids isn’t money. It’s the vote of confidence that we have faith in them—and all young people—to step up and work together to save the world,” Turner says. Along with their father, all the Turner children are trustees in the Turner Foundation. Pictured left to right: Jennie Turner Garlington, Teddy, Ted, Laura Turner Seydel, Beau, and Rhett.
After he was forced to withdraw from Brown University, Turner enlisted in the US Coast Guard. “Patriotism comes in many forms,” he says. “Citizens, no matter where they are from, serve their countries not only in uniform, but by caring for others who need help, protecting the environment, and being willing to sacrifice to achieve a greater good.”
