“She’s worth it,” Wylie said.
“I suppose.”
“Now how about you get some rest,” Wylie said to Kennedy.
“Anything you say.” She was suddenly so tired, but it was a good feeling. Loved and safe.
“Oh, I like that.” Wylie smiled. “Anything?”
“Don’t let it go to your head.” She slipped off to a dreamless sleep.
EPILOGUE
The red sports car stirred up sand and dust as it made its way to the old house. The early-morning sunlight glinted off its shiny surface, announcing its presence before it arrived. It stopped in front of the cottage. A handsome man angled his way out of the vehicle. A screen door slammed as a beautiful girl made her way onto the porch and leaned against a post. Her left arm was in a cast, held in place against her chest by a colorful sling. She played with a strand of hair. She looked the man directly in the eye.
“Morning, ma’am,” he said.
“Uh-huh,” she replied, trying not to smile.
“I was wondering if there was a town near here.”
“Up there.” She pointed with her good arm. “About a quarter of a mile. But there ain’t no work.”
“That’s OK. I don’t need work. As a matter of fact, I intend to head in the opposite direction.”
“Good idea. Heard that town can be deadly.” She smiled in earnest now, but there was sadness in her bright-gray eyes.
With that, Wylie walked up to the porch and kissed Kennedy on the lips. She indicated something just inside the door. He retrieved her suitcase. Then, putting his arm around her waist, he guided her to the waiting car. He helped her inside, closed her door, and put the bag in the backseat.
Then he got into the driver’s seat, and they drove off toward the ocean.
